Very difficult to get this type of plan done in Tokyo. I applaud the success of the planning that took almost 30 years. If there's more plans like this in the city then they'll get more accessible and truly green spaces in the city center. These type of things always start private before they can inspire other projects to become public.

All the critics on here... ugh. This is a wonderful solution and compromise and improvement over past developments. Hopefully development in Tokyo will continue in this considerate direction. I lived in Tokyo a long time ago for about 3 years and I love that city and the people.

@bbabbich3467 Who is the "we" you are speaking of here? The Japanese? Anyway, I choose not to be a part of the "it's not perfect so let's attack it" crowd... I prefer to be a part of the "it's an improvement so lets appreciate it" crowd. It's a more enjoyable way of life I find.

It is an amazing project and also another luxury shopping area for the affluent.

There is a scene where the stairs are overgrown with grass, but this grass is a highly fertile weed and was planted on a dare during construction. The purpose is to create a bird sanctuary.

Well from some shots it looks like they overblown with it. Like you have stairs going up, but you clearly see that nearly nobody actually uses them - because they already became overgrown so you cannot actually walk there in some spots without touching the grass.

麻布台付近の住民です。緑地として、なんとも言えないところですね。公共の緑の多い広場とかがなくて、ただ建物には木が植えられているだけです。建築的に綺麗ですが歓迎する雰囲気ではないと思います。

The video compares Tokyo and Los Angeles, but it is Tokyo and California that should be compared. Tokyo is only one of Japan's 47 prefectures. The size of California is about the same as the land area of Japan. With 14 million people living in Tokyo, it is not surprising that there is not much greenery. In fact, 66% of Japan's land area is green.

Hard to take this video seriously, this is for the uber rich only. $5m for an 80 sqm apartment. Seriously is not of for the people.

A five minute video of someone spouting droll exposition as to why yet another concrete structure is somehow a green space.

Great PR video but this is misrepresenting Tokyo to a degree... I'm an urbanist who's lived here (in Tokyo) for 10 years. The notion that LA or London have more greenery is flatly false unless you consider parking lots, freeways, or mountains adjacent to the city but not accessible to the public to be greenery...

In that way Tokyo has more green since it has Okutama in the west

Tokyo should tread carefully with the Heatherwick Studio. Look what’s happening with NYC’s Hudson Yards.

I'd agree with you in almost every other case but, having lived and worked in Japan, the Japanese aren't so easily swayed as we are in the west. There's a reason this project took so long to complete and I love watching big-name studios sweat trying to do projects there. A humbling experience, I'm sure.

Quite disingenuous. Green urban area? C'mon now, you can't just put grass and plants on top of buildings and call it a green space. The site is dominated by the (very ostentatious) buildings and road that runs through it, and I doubt anyone would value walking through this area for it's access to nature.

@@Shambles7698 they're promoting it as a public green space, that's misleading. the place is just green, there's nothing public about a roof

Heatherwick used to be innovative. At that time I thought of being a consultant for him. Now they just make unoriginal gestures. Resting largely on their earlier reputation.

Still seems gimmicky as you can’t actually play and walk in the green spaces! It’s NOT a park if you can’t role around and sit and lay and sun bath and kick a ball around and eat and all the other things that you CANT actually do in this so-called garden! BTW, I live in Tokyo and have been to this so-called park? It’s okay. But stop calling it a “garden” or “park”. Stop it!
