Wanting a radio for 80 metres SSB for a regular club chat evening, and not having anything on HF or SSB, I decided to go the 1960's Heathkit route. I'm not expecting to have any difficulty in locating parts or manuals, which I'm sure can be a snag on commercially made gear.
To get going, we need to check out the HP23 power supply & order new electrolytic capacitors.

My first HF rig was an SB100. It had the same power supply. Originally it had a mesh cover over it, but I took that off and fitted it in the speaker case like yours is. Saves space. Lots of happy memories. It heated and lit the shack.

Thanks Richard, a bit uneasy about the chassis not being earthed, and that three pin plug needs updating, I don't want you getting a belt off that old lady.👍

I'm satisfied the psu is earthed through the radio earth. Bear in mind the radio will have an earth straight to a copper ground rod. The black mains plug is actually of the latest style with the shrouded pins. I've changed to a 3A fuse whilst I reversed the polarity of the plug wiring Richard

@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 thats OK as long as your happy with that, I thought the plug was non shrouded type, my mistake, thanks Richard, I await the next episode regard, Carl.

Bought a Heathkit valve HF set once from a boot sale, amazing listening to the ship/rigs to shore on the NE coast. I was only about 16 and the bloke was reluctant to sell me as it came with a bare 240-110v transformer... money won In the end!

Please run a thick flexible wire (braid from thick coax) from the power supply chassis to the radio chassis.... It might save your radio or your life or both... 73 de PZ1CD

I definitely would have fitted a 3 Core flex and earth that unit. It's not worth the risk.

The way I see it is that the PSU gets it's earth from the radio. Because the radio HAS to be earthed to a copper ground rod, the PSU receives it's earth from the radio. This will all be proved on the bench at low voltage before power is applied. Richard

@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 The Earth Fault Loop Resistance will be too high from an earth rod for the fuse to operate (blow) in the event of a failure you would only be using an RCD (If Fitted) for Fault Protection. I world really recommend not using an additional earth rod to earth the electrical system unless the supply to the property has been designed to use one and then using a conductor that can handle the fault current of the proptery so at least a 10mm earth. Also, your shack (proptery) is referenced to mains earth and bringing an additional earth into the shack can in some instances present a danger. If you're going to run the radio like that I'd recommend it ran on a safety isolating transformer with an RCD and a EFLI of under 100 Ohms,. And keep it away from mains earth so you cannot touch both at the same time.

In part 2 I replaced all the electrolytic capacitors. The ones on the top had to be placed into capacitor clips as the original type with the outer securing ring are clearly long unobtainable aftwer 50 years. I bough all gthe capacitors from RS Compnents here in the UK. Richard, G0OJF, UK
