You need 5 RCA leads at minimum. 1st to link "RCVR ANT" antenna between the two. 2nd is "RCVR MUTE" control shutting off receive when transmitting. 3rd is "LMO" (VFO) using receiver LMO to drive transmitter. 4th is "HET" which is your band oscillator. 5th is "BFO" which is the carrier oscillator. You can plug the speaker into the receiver or use a 6th RCA lead to go fbetween "RCVR AUDIO" sockets then speaker will plug into the transmitter. I have found old audio and TV RCA leads work no trouble at all. I coloured coded them.

Your welcome. If I delay in responding it is because I don't have notifications turned on. I also had a hand full of cables and confusion until I worked it out. The Heathkit system is quite clever using the 301 to provide all the signals for the 401. Whatever you are listening too is the same frequency you are transmitting on but don't forget the to have the transmitter VFO switch in locked position so that the recieve VFO does both. @@allanwooden5817
