Fred, if you would mount the antenna maybe a meter or two above the ground on a piece of PVC tubing and run two radials out and leave them elevated above the ground, it would be a much better DX antenna. Enjoy your videos.

Aloha Fred, the trick to running that antenna and the JPC-12 on 10 and 11 meters is to not use that 2 foot long black pipe and connect that telescopic antenna directly to that bottom connector that you plug your coax into. Your SWR’s should drop to 1:2 to 1 or better. I’m known here in Hawaii for DX’ing with my Xiegu G90 on one watt only. The G90 is such a very well made rig that I own two of them and operating at one watt only is an interesting challenge if you use a QRP rig. My average on one watt is 5,026 miles with signal reports between 5/7 to 5/9+ 40 on a homebrew antenna that I built to mimic the Chameleon telescopic vertical for under $80 USD verses $699 + shipping & tax. As reference, I cut my ground radicals x 4 @ 15’ 6” and a gallon of water around the ground spike because our soil has a slight salt content. Good luck and I love your videos! 🤙🏻👍🤙🏻😎

My first time comment but have been a subscriber for a very long time (from Australia). I like these portable antenna's. I have an old ATAS manual tune antenna I bought when I first got my ham radio licence and my first Yaesu radio. An FT 817 nd QRP radio thyat I did mod to use 27 MHz as well. Yes the ground plane is important. If you take your portable antenna out to higher ground you will have a bloody good time mate. By the way. It's good to see the real you on your videos like the previous video you did with the hand held radio. I don't read comments so I hope no one gave you shit for showing yourself on camera. 73 mate. Hi Fred good review of an interesting little portable antenna. I suppose the lack of supplied radial wires does make some sense at the price of the kit. My thinking is that the radial length would vary according to what band you want to use it on, assuming you are setting it up as a quarter wave (as advertised) on each band the matched radials ideally would each be a 1/4 wave too for a good SWR match. You would need a bundle of 4 wires for each band for 20M through to 6m so leaving the radial wires to the buyer makes some sense, at the end of the day only the buyer knows which bands they intend to work it on. Anyway as always I appreciate your time making the vids and the fact you are one of the few on KZbin who doesn’t have a boring 10 min long sponsorship section. 😁

I'm confused. The Sirio 1/2 wave GPS27 is a similar price, achieves 1.(nothing) SWR and is happy 6ft off the ground. Having no counterpoise requirement, no extra wires are required. Yes it is nearly 6M tall, but that's it. Just a stick in the air. For single use 27MHz, there are better alternatives.
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK 2 күн бұрын
I think you missed the point. The longer antenna will always be the first choice and perform better. However as i explained during the video not everyone can put up an 18 foot antenna at home. This antenna at least will get you on the air and actually works well on skip.

Have you tried using a carbon fiber pole with faraday tape on the outside of it? I saw a chap on youtube who made one that worked quite well.
@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt
@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt Күн бұрын
One could just use the carbon fibre pole as it is conductive in itself. The main component of carbon fiber is carbon, and its molecular structure is similar to graphite. Thus, it behaves like metal because its electrical conductivity is extremely high.
@aurthorthing7403
@aurthorthing7403 Күн бұрын
@@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt no it doesn't. You have to have a metal conductor for this to be an antenna.
@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt
@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt Күн бұрын
@@aurthorthing7403 Well that's new news to me Mr Thing because I use carbon fibre poles in my employment for all sorts of things and the FACT they are conductive is why I still need to use stupid old heavy fiberglass poles in situations where electrical conductivity is a concern. Dont believe me, Google the subduct or even better still go get a carbon pole and go touch it on a powerline and see if you're still around to respond to this with another 'No it doesn't' comment. 🙄🔌
@aurthorthing7403
@aurthorthing7403 Күн бұрын
@@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt high voltages will conduct through the carbon fiber but as an antenna they need a metal conductor because the resistance is WAY too high to be used as an antenna by itself. There is a video of an idividual who made one and he explains the reasons why you need a metal strip of copper or in his case, he used faraday tape. The SWR would be out of sight if you don't use a metal conductor and it will burn out when you transmit or "key the mic"
@aurthorthing7403
@aurthorthing7403 Күн бұрын
@@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt green or wet wood is also conductive but you can't use it to make an antenna either. But high voltages with high current will still go through the wet or green wood and kill you but that doesn't mean it will make a good antenna.
