Looking forward to trying this upgrade, However I would suggest replacing the 18 gauge power cables with a heavier 14 gauge wire. With a 900 watt heating element your getting dangerously close to 18 gauge wire limit. Play it safe and go to 14 gauge.
@PMPBBQ
@PMPBBQ 5 жыл бұрын
That would probably be a safe addition to this upgrade. I didn't change my wiring just went with the original but this is a concern that is worthy of considering. Glad you commented this concern so other that make this upgrade can consider that and use your suggestion and upgrade the wiring for the 900 watt element. Safety should always be a major concern. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on this upgrade. I will pin this to the top of the comments so other can make necessary adjustments to their upgrade.

In Southern climates, the 500W element is still not enough. It can get up to temp after a long time, but takes forever to recover after the door is open. Something I found in my OBS when it was new was that the power was dropping completely because of poor contact between the power cord and receptacle on the back. I bent the metal pins in and that made a big difference. I still had to upgrade to the 900W element and use the Auber PID to maintain temp and recover time. With those tweaks, it rocks. If I had it to do over, I would buy another stock element, porcelain Insulators, and an element cover and mount a second stock element right above the one that came with it. That would be a little cleaner tweak.

I bought my first Bradley used just to see if it was something I would be interested in doing before I spent $300 on a smoker. I was unimpressed by the temperature but I reasoned that was because it was REALLY used smoker and figured the heating element was 'tired'. I really liked the Bradley otherwise so I bought a brand new smoker. It had the same issue (but you knew that!). Not wanting to spend even more money on smokers, I just changed my use of it- I use it to cold-smoke (smoke on, heat off) and then finish in the kitchen oven. And I satisfied myself that that gives me better control over when it will be done over a smoker outside where the weather conditions decide if you eat at 5pm or 7pm. Excuse after excuse, I gave the Bradley the benefit of the doubt. Now being that Bradley is in Canada, I cannot for the life of me understand why they would put such a small element in their smoker unless they are trying to meet some safety regulation. I'll be doing this upgrade and I too was concerned not only about the wire gauge but also the rating on the rheostat in the smoke generator that controls the heating element.

I just got my Bradley a couple of weeks ago. I am in Canada and have had a very hard time with temperatue. Even with a preheat I can't get the temp past 220. Once food goes in it drops to 180-190. Smoking ribs last week after 3 hours it was still recovering and could not get the temp past 210. I had to finish in the oven. This is something I will for sure look into doing! Especially if I'm going to be doing something significant like brisket.

Thanks so much for the great instructions! My 500w element was dying so I upgraded to this since I had to remove the element anyway. I’m only at the testing stage, haven’t cooked anything yet, but I’m happy so far. Mine takes a little longer to come up to temp than yours. I got to 230 in about 17-22 minutes depending on what temp gauge was more accurate, and then I left the door open about 3 minutes to let it cool to 200 degrees, and inserted my pan of cold water. It only took about 12 minutes to get back to 230. I also turned it up to 280 at that point and got it there in about 17 minutes. All this was with the burner only, no smoke generator on, it looks like yours was on, so mine might have been a little faster if I turned it on too. Did you ever change out your wires? I left mine for now, I think the fuse should protect it from overloading but I’m going to watch it. Where can I get the high temp 14 gauge wiring if needed?

Hi And thanks for the video. I did the upgrade, changed the wiring to the 14G hi temp silicone wire and upgraded the thermofuse. Smoker & new element working well but gets really hot to the point that the insulation in the back of the smoker is showing burn marks and some melt where the element is positioned on the inside. I’m thinking I need to install some kind of a heat shield or reflector inside behind the element. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks for watching and commenting Harvey, I've not noticed that problem on either of mine. Maybe someone else here has ideas for you. Here’s my response back from Bradley just now. Now I’m researching cheap multi-meters which is something I don’t own but could use... Thank you for contacting Bradley Smoker. If you own a multi-meter, check to ensure that you are getting 120 volts out of the short power cord. You can also check the heat element for resistance. It should test 27-32 ohms. If these both test good, then the issue is probably with the temp sensor. The temp sensor is the little button in the middle of the back wall on the inside of the cabinet (the big box). You can clean that off and see if it helps. For further assistance, contact customer service at 1-866-508-7514. Be sure to have the serial number. We will be closed for the holiday from 12/24 to 12/29 and will be back in the office on 12/30. Hours of operation: 8:00AM to 4:30PM Central.

I would suggest making sure all the connections in the back of the unit are secure. One of mine came loose and I had no power originally. Take them off an put them back on. Also, make sure the plugs are secured. Mine sometimes come loose and then I get no heat from the unit. If all that fails maybe the inline fuse has gone. I blew mine before and everything looks like it works but no heat. You can purchase that from Yard and Pool.

I'm going to try this without a PID, from what I understand the only purpose that one serves is to stop temp swings from going past the temperature target of say 230 degrees up to say 240 then back down to 220 etc, I'm not that concerned about swings at this point, my big prop is I rarely can get the internal temp past 210, which takes everything forever. I should try this without a PID? Thanks for the video and great explanations.

I can say I am somewhat disappointed with my Bradley smoker and its inability to heat up quickly, maintain an accurate temperature, and slow (to say the least) recovery time. After watching your video, and reading tons of material I am going to make the following modifications. 1. 1100 watt element (replacing 18 gauge to 14 gauge wire) 2. Auber PID single probe wall mount, model ws 1211, 3. Add an electric pump/sprayer on a timer with stainless tubing (to spray the meat)., and considering putting in a fan. I know this is the lazy mans way but I am so busy with life like the rest of us it just seems the easy way to create great food with minimal amount of work. Any thoughts?

Will require new crimp terminations if you go that route. If you keep the old 18ga wiring (IMO will be fine, just did it because I had everything). Keep in mind the existing ring terminals on the factory element will not fit over the studs of the 900w element without replacing them with larger gauge terminals so the holes are larger, or try to open up the existing rings with a drill bit or small uni bit. Upon testing my smoker, the starting temp was 85 and was up to 225 in under 10 minutes!! Great upgrade @Pull My Pork BBQ !!

There is no need to upgrade the wire. I will assume Bradley is using High Heat AWG wire, which can carry much more AMPs than standard AWG wire. I will also presume they would use at least 150 degree Celsius (303 degrees Fahrenheit) High Heat wire. Now, there are many grades for this wire BUT they range from 10 amps to 20 amps well with in the range of the 7.5 amps a 900 watt heating element will pull. By the way, standard AWG 18 gauge wire is rated at 7 amps which would have to be upgraded to at least 16 gauge

I checked on Amazon EU and they don't offer the 900 watt element. The only link I can find is for the one from Amazon here in US. I will continue to look and try to find one for you.

@@PMPBBQ Thanks for looking, I like to BBQ and smoke all year round but in the coldest months its not easy. I have found one in the UK but the price is 230GPB. I need someone who is due to fly over to the US to bring me a few back for the UK Bradley Smokers. Loving the you tube channel.

Hi David, the Tempco part number for the 240V equivalent of this heater is 'CSF00132'. The UK distributor is www.pneutherm.co.uk .

I live semi-remote in Wyoming -- high desert at about 5500 ft. My old Bradley is Not digital --- its probably over 15 years old, and I HAVE TO do this upgrade, as its unusable in any cool weather. BUT ALSO ---- over the years, the plastic rheostat slide temperature control tip at the bottom of the smoker has broken off -- I have to get down to eyeball lever and stick a knife blade in there to adjust the temperature slide control. Any ideas on HOW to remedy this problem?? Cas in Wyoming (formally Alaska).
I have discovered the EASIEST way to deep clean a cold smoke generator!
