I was INCREDIBLY fond of the Heatwave (although Pulse Carbine will remain my favorite weapon anyway 😅), as Heatwave is very similar to the design of the Forerunner's robots, which can be easily noticed just by looking at the Tank Sentinel from Halo 2 Anniversary, although the Forerunner's sentinel are unlikely to be in multiplayer, the presence of at least this gun gives me something that I really lacked in previous games from 343 industries ))

Honestly, area control is a genuinely underappreciated function of many guns. A lot of the time, it isnt the damage itself that deters, its the very threat of unavoidable damage. The heatwave is exactly that. It can entirely lock down a room single handedly. And you dont even have to shoot. All that has to happen is your enemies know you have one. Because the threat of damage is worse than damage itself.

Not all weapons need to do insane amounts of damage, but when you add guns like this into a sandbox where you spawn with ARs and BRs, then its kind of hard to compete especially in a world were you have to actively know and seek out where these weapons spawn on the field. The heatwave is good only for killing vehicles basically, something that which he didn't mention in the video. You can get some rebound shots in smaller areas, but its usually almost never worth the effort to go and pick this gun up when you could be rolling around with your squad and getting shit done with your spawned weapon, exceptions for the SPNKr and sword - other power weapons obviously. It kind of makes me ask how many of these weapons actually have a purpose in competitive multiplayer lobbies.

I came to this conclusion about it being more of a Support Power Weapon. You're not using it to get the kills, you're using it to setup kills for yourself or allies. The Ravager and the Heatwave both have unique aspects to them that allow that. And when the video started, showing off the scattergun, I think the Bulldog is the result of splitting up the scattergun. Bulldog, faster ROF, quicker reload etc.. The last bit wasn't in the scattershot, as it reloaded pretty much the same as the regular shotgun, but the idea of it being a faster firing, more aggressive weapon translated pretty well into the Bulldog. And the Heatwave was taking the quirk of the projectiles bouncing around, especially noticeable in the H5 scattershot variant, the Didact's Signet, to the N'th degree. I found myself trying to avoid going for single targets, especially with the layouts of the map, because I want to focus on as much damage as possible, to as many enemies as possible. The horizontal spread allows for more, well, spread and causing as much damage as possible over a wide line, while the vertical option is more of a panic 2 hit burst kill, if you land all 6 pellets on a single target.
@SergeantNovak233 жыл бұрын
The Ravager, from what I’ve played with it in the drills, also seems like a great utility weapon. You can lock down rooms or at least sections of rooms with its charged-up shot that creates a persistent area-of-effect damage. I’m willing to bet this will be a popular choice in objective modes.
@AscendHyperion3 жыл бұрын
Well, I would consider the Ravager more on the side of the traditional power weapon. That weapon is very much so all about dealing high amounts of damage as aggressively as possible. I think I need more time with it to affirm what Im about to type, but right now, Id consider it overpowered, unless 343 wanted to consider it a tier 3 power weapon.

Something I feel is pretty nice is that it’s looking like the Heatwave is going to be great for pairing up with a friend. Get a friend with a BR or Needler and have him mop up the disoriented enemy team while you spray Heatwave shots to get them off balance. I wouldn’t say it’s a very good lone wolf weapon, even with the potential damage of bounced shots, but is a fantastic thing to pick up if you play to the team.

I feel like a lot of people don't care about utility anything these days regardless of the game, unless it's baked into an already existing weapon, ability, and/or passive effect. The same people also seem too focused on doing the biggest amount of damage, getting the most number kills, or being on the leader boards. Looking at Halo weapons the discussions that have come about with the plasma pistol/rifle, concussion rifle, and grenade launcher come to mind. The heat wave seems to fall under that same talking point but Halo being its own kind of shooter it'll take time to find its nishe. Side note I feel the whole discussion of what 'support' means to people, plays a big role in how players treat mechanics. The whole "if it dosnt heal or act as heavy ordnance (air/artillery strike) then its worthless", type of debate.

Beam rifle was the exception, not the rule. Now, the Heatwave actually does have a very unique place in the sandbox so generally everyone accepts it.

I will say that those people claiming that weapons should have as little functional overlap as possible to reduce redundancy and minimization are _right_ (Because they are. That's Game Design 101) but the problem is that, with the exception of CE's limited weapon sandbox, this really hasn't ever been true of Halo. Sniper/Beam Rifle, Carbine/BR, etc. Doom does this exceptionally well, and I think Halo could actually learn a thing or two from Doom Eternal's weapon design and interplay, but criticizing the Scattershot for being what several weapons in Halo had already been for years (slightly different weapons that ultimately fill the same functional niche) doesn't make a lot of sense. Also, and this is really just a pet peeve of mine, but bouncing projectiles is not a mechanic, it's a property of those projectiles. Mechanics are actions mapped to inputs used to interact with the game system. Shooting, jumping, reloading, etc. are mechanics.

And then having it a Zone control also makes it stand out from a typical shotgun, but also makes sense in clearing out rooms filled with Food (or players in this case).

The heat wave and ravager both play with a specific function. You can use it for kills and chase down people and that works, but both weapons have a strength in asset denial and area control. I love seeing utility weapons getting love. I think some people might be mistaking these guns as “bad” or as “power weapons” but in reality they aren’t. I thought they were going to be power weapons when I first picked them up but instead they serve a unique purpose in the sandbox and I really enjoy using both of them.

Ahh. So it was intended to be a half shotgun half HL1 hive hand.

I fear this may become meta-breakingly powerful in high level play. Promethean vision and or team callouts could lead to players killing each other from around corners with little counterplay. This could probably be fixed with reduced range, but I could a tryhard player absolutely clearing out entire teams solo with this thing as it is, we'll see how it goes at launch

I want more unconventional weapons like this. Something that is not straight forward like the assault rifle, but something that you can pull out when the situation or scenario calls for it. Like the gravity hammer or the sword.

I think the Heatwave proves that 343 has finally understand that it’s not the amount of damage what makes a weapon special or different, is How it makes the damage what makes the weapon special or different 🙂

This new evolution of the weapon sandbox is the smartest love they could have made possible IMO. They really out did them selves with unique and powerful each weapon feels no matter which one you’re using. Even the assault rifle has an amazing feeling of unloading at Mach speed that I find myself bursting the gun like you’re supposed to just because the gun feels so powerful it just makes sense to my brain to control the gun through bursting! Such an amazing job they did so happy to see them take all the best parts of every game even halo five which I didn’t like or play past the first month was lovingly paid homage too but only the good shit!!!

I fell in love with this thing because during the campaign it turned out to be a devastating anti-flying-sonofabitch gun and became one of my go-tos for dealing with skimmers.

I think the Heatwave is my favourite new weapon - it's great to see another weapon with unique and useful functions, and a high skill cap allowing the weapon to be even more versatile and useful in the right hands. And whilst it's not a damage focused weapon, it can take down an enemy with 3 clean vertical shots which makes it fairly deadly in a straight gunfight.

I absolutely loved the Heatwave. It's one of the better new weapons 343 has created imo. Good video my dude.

The way the heatwave is done helps with preventing bot team ups as they have the tactic is moving as a single group. So doing so would help trap, as well as separate squads to show a “you might outgun me, but you are in my kill zone now’ when it comes to hallway combat

The scatter shot is excellent at cleaning up the flood or the any form of the undead. The heatwave on the other hand is a combination of how to create that damage and the sick alternate fire mode effect in to a shotgun plasma cutter combo all in one neat package.

Totally agree with you. The scatter shot was great when you hit a random bounce shot.

Haven't played Infinite yet but this is exactly the kind of gun I've been wanting since I first played Halo almost 20 years ago. This thing will be amazing for defending objectives, especially on maps with indoor bases.
@jamaicanufo83263 жыл бұрын
I agree that evolution of the scattershot into the Heatwave was the best course of action available. Once people fully understand the function of the gun to its fullest extent then I think people will see the inherent use of this as an area denial tool to be a good thing, that diversifies its role in the weapon sandbox.
@tristanlanier56413 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with the area control aspect, I'm also a star wars battlefront 2 player, and one learned that the heavy sentry gun is for area control and denial

honestly good take. I remember being really good at the scattershot in halo 4 and especially halo 5, so i hope its still in Infinite. I never really understood the hate for it.

I had no idea the projectiles of the scattershot could bounce... My mind is fking blown. (I think having a multitude of weapon quirks makes for the more interesting game, it's really tricky to balance but worth it when done right.)
@rcweasel46633 жыл бұрын
If they made it more like the didacts signet with the tracking I think that it might become my new favorite gun. Being able to shoot people around corners and make areas of denial was sooo fun in H5

Aside from the alt fire and less damage the heatwave, is the scattershot, but in a new coat of paint. When you think of all the features, everything that makes them unique very closely lines up.bouncing projectiles, multiple shots in a cluster format,

It's worth mentioning as well that the Heatwave's pellets can travel through and damage multiple enemies in a row. One shot has the potential to actually damage 3 or even 4 enemies in one shot, because after hitting the first, the pellets don't despawn, they actually continue on their flight path and can still ricochet after doing so. In the stream from 343, they explained this functionality too

That just further secures it as a good utility weapon

Glad to see some Heatwave love, everyone right now is just a Commando Stan. Also I feel like the Beam Rifle vs. Scattershot thing comes down to nostalgia. If it was an effective weapon and came from their favorite game(s) in the series, then they'll demand it return no matter how redundant or similar it is. That's why people keep asking for the CE Magnum to come back even in the presence of the DMR, BR, and current Magnum. Same with them saying they want the original AR to return, even though it was explicitly redesigned to allow the SMG to stand apart from it (which would be especially difficult to do nowadays without dual wielding being half the SMG).
@Sceptis2 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to see that nobody is comparing this to a weapon that was considered borderline broken in another beloved shooter franchise: the flack cannon of Unreal Tournament. Spamming flack around corners was an extremely good way to make the first and last hit in a fire fight, whether the enemy was rounding a corner or fleeing for cover, especially in maps like Deck 16 with lots of blind corridors.
@puddel90793 жыл бұрын
Once I saw the ricochet, I thought of the scattershot as a halo themed version of Unreal Tournament's flak cannon, minus the mortar functionality.

I think you and I are about the only ones in the entire comment section to make that connection. Shows our age, I guess? :P
@wickerg0413 жыл бұрын
The heatwave is actually a slaying weapon too if you use it's alternate fire mode. The spread fire is great when you work in teams, not giving your enemy team much of a chance to fire back as a gail of ricochet rounds fly all around and at them, giving your team a window or two to go in and finish them off. The horizontal firing mode however really focuses outright single target damage, but even then, how practical you deal that damage depends on his you use it. Hitting direct shots is definitely an option but hitting the floor so the rounds ricochet up into their faces is both fun, and maybe even more practical if the whole gimmick of the weapon is that it deals increased damage after a bounce! All in all, i love it for it's wide variety of usage and the effort you need to make to use it effectively.

This was absolutely the proper way to evolve the sandbox. Infinite is finally focusing on sandbox utility as opposed to just damage like Halo 5 did. I wanna see a lot more evolving just like the heatwave!
