Permaculture says “creatively use and respond to change.” How can we view the heat waves and we are facing this summer to spark creativity and harness energy in order to live more comfortably and sustainably?
Take a look at my solar dehydrator, a passive device made from free and repurposed materials that helps me dry food and herbs for FREE using the sun’s energy.

What an amazing dehydrator , no electricity just using the sun, love it Angela. It is really hot here and humid in central Florida, can’t wait to go up to Pennsylvania this weekend, we are taking a long road trip, fully vaccinated and thankful to the wonderful scientists 💕

You are such a role model to me!! I hope to have a food forest one day. This is such an interesting vid; might seem like a small concept, but it's hugely important! I'm from Houston TX and my hometown is getting regularly destroyed by flooding. So many areas of the world facing increasing climate issues. It sucks, but it's the reality and all we can do is acknowledge that and move forward trying to make the best of things. Stay cool!

Greetings from sunny Santa Rosa, California. 105 yesterday, "only" 92 today, ugh. I do not own a solar dehydrator, I have one of those American Harvester electric devices. On a yearly basis, our solar panels produce about twice as much electricity as we use, so I'm indirectly using solar power to dehydrate. On the other hand, gas prices are horrible, so I'm thrilled to have a Sun Oven, which is currently cooking some carrot halvah on the back porch. Anyway, I love that dehydrator you have; another thing to put on my Wish List for when my hubby retires next year!

What an amazing solar food dehydrator! I am adding it to my long list of projects:) Would love to know which fruits/veggies/nuts/leaves/etc you use in your dehydrator, how you store and like to eat/cook them:) My family love to snack with dried mangoes I would like to transition to local, sustainable dried products. Thanks

Hello Angela, Thank you for your video. I am wondering how you know the items are dry enough to be stored in the pantry for several months without spoiling? Do you store them in glass jars?

If you buy shelf stable dry food, aim for that same texture.

Whats interesting is solar panel/ battery ( including car battery) recycling... That must be thought of and prepared for when thinking solar... hopefully that will improve.. otherwise we will have a worse problem. Maybe recycling panels and batteries will improve.

Loved your video and loved your dehydrator. QUESTION: since most dehydrators work on drying food in a low heat setting so as not to destroy the nutritional aspect of the item being dried, I’m curious as to how hot does your dehydrator get while working in the full sun? Have you ever put a thermometer in your unit to see how hot it gets? Before I set off to build one, I hope you can answer this for me.

Her dehydrator is made very similarly to my Sun Oven, which if I have in the full sun gets to about 350. With adjusting the position so the sun is not hitting it full-on, it is possible (but tricky) to have it about the same temp as the American Harvester electric dehydrator, which can be set for 135 for drying fruit. Even that low temperature pretty much destroys the vitamin C, but as far as I know all other vitamins will be fine, but don't quote me on that.

Your solar dryer is pretty too! Our bears would carry it away. They come right up to our house windows. They do not fear us. We are next to 200 acres of woods, but in town... Gosh I do like this idea though.
