Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert is an American musical television special that was broadcast live on NBC. The cast includes John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Brandon Victor Dixon and Alice Cooper. The musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is almost entirely sung-through, with minimal spoken dialogue. The plot is loosely based on the Canonical Gospels' accounts of the last week of the life of Jesus Christ, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion.

The part of this song when Judas follows Jesus as He moves across the front of the stage touching hands with the audience is one of the very best things in this whole show. Jesus was a rock star, his followers adored him, and Legend plays that perfectly. Say what you will about his singing, this is one of the things he got absolutely right.

That's the point of them doing it. It was done to show the way Jesus's followers, and Jesus himself, ignored the fears Judas had until he felt the only way to save them was to betray Jesus.

… that was literally the point. Did you listen to what was being sung? The director BRILLIANTLY used the inevitable audience reaction to John at the exact point he did to make it part of the story and what Judas is seeing. “You’ve started to believe the things they say of you You really do believe This talk of God is true And all the good you’ve done Will soon be swept away You’ve begun to matter more Than the things you say!”

His voice is deeper than the normal range for people cast as Jesus- but I think it still could have worked:) he just seemed to struggle to act and sing at the same time and both suffered for it. Usually if he had to, he prioritized singing:) so I think we are missing that performance portion 😬 it’s not an easy job!
