Fast-moving storms with strong winds, large hail and apparent tornadoes swept Oklahoma and Kansas, blowing roofs off homes and blocking roads with toppled trees and downed power lines.
Wind gusts well over 60 mph (about 100 kph) were reported in many areas as the storms, which began Sunday afternoon and lasted through the night, moved eastward.
In central Kansas, a 100 mph (160 kph) wind gust was reported at the airport in Salina, the National Weather Service said.
The weather service said it received 13 tornado reports Sunday from Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.
Schools were canceled Monday in several communities as the clean-up began.
More storms were forecast for later in the day.
The National Weather Service warned of an enhanced risk of severe storms late Monday night into early Tuesday in parts of Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska.

I’ve been in 3 dust storms in my short time in phoenix. It’s like being sand blasted. And any crack or any place air is coming into your house you have to expect a lot of sand

Other than that is there anything to worry about? Like high winds, big debris?

Even the dust storms in the Sahara look somewhat similar. I remember them bc it had a few really strong years recently, so much that it affected the east coast US to varying degrees. Cant imagine actually being in one though.

I have lived through major blizzards in Massachusetts, hurricanes in South Carolina, tornadoes in Oklahoma and Kansas, floods in NY, and dust storms in the Mojave Desert. Out of all of them, dust storms were the most terrifying.

Yip....the dust bowl in Oklahoma was the worst recorded back in the 20's. In fact, California wouldn't even let the victims cross into their state. They told them they weren't allowed to go to California. When that finally ended, the Oklahoma farmers taught California new farming methods that saved their entire agriculture methods. Those "oakies" made California the most powerful agricultural production area in the entire world....and people there still called them hillbillies.

@@Imofftopic nope, direct hit tornadoes. Granted, EF2, but that was enough. I was also in Moore for the EF5 in 2013. I didn't live there, and I wasn't directly hit, but I was in town and sheltering. That was terrifying. Maybe I've lived in Oklahoma too long, but tornadoes don't scare me like they used to. Dust storms though, can't do it. My claustrophobia probably plays a part. Lol

We've had these move through Kansas before. When I was a kid and one was coming, my mom (who had lived out in a desert in CA for a bit) would call us in, we'd put damp towels around the doors and windows, turn off the AC, and wait for it to pass.

I didn't know till a few years ago that strong, fast-moving thunderstorms could raise a dust storm at its leading edge like this. That's because it seems very contradictory that a storm with a lot of very heavy rain could also be pushing a lot of dust. At least the rain will quickly wash the dust away.
