@Yupppi4 жыл бұрын
Great episode pinpointing some key stuff. A lot of those adjustments and playstyle come naturally without thinking when you've played around with metal long enough. And it truly is in the fingers at the end of the day, you can play the same riffs on acoustic and make them sound similarly heavy if you know what you're looking for. Like muting the right way. Similar to how you guys probably find great blues tones and play some licks beautifully without even thinking about how it's done and a metal guy might go "I just don't get how they do it". Personally I tend to dial a lot of the bass out (definitely more than Rabea) just because it makes it a bit boomy and feel like it responds slower, chokes the sound in a sense. I love to let bass do its work with kick drum and leave some room for other instruments below 400 Hz. I find that in general a lot of annoying tones come from around 300 Hz in guitar anyway. At least with plenty gain. Personally I also prefer a bit less output than a lot of modern pickups, they often reduce dynamics for being too hot and you gotta screw them low just to get lower gain rock sounds. A lot of my favourite metal albums were recorded with jcm 800 and tubescreamer with duncan jb or comparable setup. Alex Skolnick, now renowned jazz artist, did that in Testament in 90's (with Dimarzios though but same difference), Dave Mustaine/Megadeth has been rocking Marshall (or hot rodded Marshall like) and jb for all 90's, Zakk Wylde in Ozzy used SD-1 into Marshall (with EMG-81 in Les Paul though), my favourite drive for metal tones. Has that nicer midrange than TS. And like I've mentioned in the past, Bill Steer just rocks Les Paul Junior into Marshall/5150 in B for metal tones. Too much gain will often hurt those accurate riffs unless you set it up very carefully. Gain knob rarely is the answer to that because after certain point in almost any amp it just turns into stupid shizzle without body and roar. But Marshall turned loud often handles it well. And to be honest, a strat with less gain for leads is a secret weapon, it has a lovely singing character. A lot of metal bands today in my opinion do the mistake of too hot pickups into too hot amp, just too much gain and scooped tone making the leads sound like cutting with bandsaw too fast, it is very tight and buzzy sound in the high frequencies and is displeasing to ear. Another brilliant band in the description of "those guys in the mask" with great guitar tones is Ghost. Although not as metal, but beautiful range of music styles and just brilliant song writing. Gotta hand it to Tobias Forge when he says he composes the music with the thought pattern of making it stadium rock and catchy stuff inspired by old rock etc, but also depending on the current story development behind the band's "lore", he mentioned as well writing for one "smarter ghoul" who plays a bit trickier things and a "more simple ghoul" that mostly just plays rhythms and chords. Just terrific soundscapes. The more extreme metal genres like black metal, death metal, speed metal, thrash and grind and whatnot, those Death, Carcass and Emperor etc bands kinda came from before nu-metal as a continuation to maybe 80's metal and opposing grunge and that stuff. Many of them still played Marshally stuff in the early days. They all kinda share minor similarities but are noticeably different. And then came nu-metal that was like just really weird genre that spoke to teenagers. Hard to put that in with other metal genres. Not something I like but gotta respect coming up with a totally unique genre and it was really heavy like how you mention slipknot. Adding to that, Carcass kinda invented the modern heavy sound, or their producer, on Heartwork in 1993. He used a frankencab where he put two marshall shells together and used two 57s, on-axis and off-axis or outside of the cone center to capture it. Later bands have perfected the idea like in flames' producer used some regular high gain amps like I suppose 5150, but also they've added stuff like valvestate or even a marshall battery amp just a tiny bit for that really gnarly bite that just small/solid state amps have. It's a world of difference in how it doesn't breath like a proper big valve amp, so you get that immediateness and bite to the sound when you mix it in just a tiny bit. Interestingly Neural DSP Plini, the kinda standard metal plugin now, has ribbon 160 mics as default. And they do work really well in the plugin. Even though people are getting kinda tired of 57 sound, it's a brilliant piece of itech for the fact that you can just throw it on the cab and you get nice growling middy, distorted guitar tone, be it gig or recording. They just got it right at shure when they came up with it. I hope you figure out how to record more episodes in case GB won't ease on restrictions, I can barely take waiting for the next friday after watching a new episode every week. Lastly, shoutouts to Rabea. He just can do the thing. But also other things. One of the modern unique metal gods in my books is Mattias Eklundh, although I think he deserves to be called veteran by now. His channel is interesting niché of guitar content and his own experimentations in his forest cabin, love the guy. You might have met him in thomann festivals, hopefully one day he can also visit your show and talk about his ideology, tones, technique and history.

All joking aside, I thought this was a brilliant illustration of going beyond the gear... the idea of 'intent' is a great synthesis of what 99% of us as players are attempting to achieve, but perhaps can't articulate. Yes the gear and setup contribute, but without intent driving creativity it's just some shiny boxes and wooden string platforms. This is not to denigrate the inherent beauty of, and fascination with, tone searching which is why most of us found this channel in the first place, but once we've found that elusive tone of the day, what do we do with it? How many of us (I am woefully guilty of this) spend time carefully dialing in tones only to then hear another great example of a different tone and head off down another rabbit hole? For example Rabea's tones are STELLAR, and given my recent re-appreciation of prog metal, I can feel the temptation (and yes I totally will) but what is my intention? What if anything will I do with it? Have I just become an endless explorer of tone, constantly seeking new avenues without actually spending time with a sound I like and creating music with it? Forgive the long winded reply, but quarantine has left me with a lot of time to contemplate.

When it comes to modern metal "chugging", it really does come down to the guitarist, and how they attack the strings, palm mute, etc. You can tell that Mick and Dan just don't play a lot of palm muted chugs. It's a very detailed style of playing, lots of nuances, and a lighter touch than ou would imagine. It took me forever to really learn how to palm mute with such high-gain tones.

I'm 15m in and I had to laugh in enjoyment hearing Rabea playing the three guitars in sequence. A takeaway from this segment for me was that touch is a big thing with this sound, also what you choose to play (like Rabea said - going for power chords, hard rock-ish type of things isn't going to get you there). But he's so confortable with it, it's awesome. Sounds poweful and agressive and somehow just enough, never over the top out of control. ps: love the nod to Lateralus with Dan's LP.

When people say "tone is in the fingers", I feel it has everything with your picking hand: The angle, how deep you dig, the force with which you pick, how far from the bridge, how you mute, etc. They all have a massive influence on the harmonics you create while playing. Hearing Rabea on the 3 guitars vs Dan & Mick is a great example of this
@andreyaek22664 жыл бұрын
I know right! A lot of others already said this but I'll chime in, this video is a really great demonstration of this fact. I had the idea that this phenomenon only would apply with cleaner sounds than this, and that once you throw on all that distortion (or lots of other effects I guess) that difference between players would get smoothed out. But no, even with all that clipping they all sounded so clearly different. Most interesting moment on this show in a long time, to my ears.

This is such a *great* video. I’m just now seeing it for the first time even though I’ve been a fan or Rabea and Andertons for a while. Thanks, KZbin :( There’s a lot to be learned from this video. Fun to watch too.

Rabea is probably the only heavy player that I enjoy. His tone is just awesome, and the ambient mixed with the heavy is something I don’t feel like I could do, but I’m determined to try. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Thanks mates!

Timely upload. Babymetal is about to stream a show they did a while ago, and their Kami Band are some of the best heavy metal players in Japan.

Mick, you nailed it: it's all in the intention, and there's no substitute for having listened to the music to the point where it's part of yourself, and your ears are tuned to that sound. And develop the right hand attack that works with it (which Rabea has in spades). Then it's just a matter of turning the pots until it sounds right. But yeah, it start with the ears and taste of the player, then get conveyed into the hands, and then is a matter of getting the gear to do what you want it to. There's a fun video where Ola Englund uses a 335, Tele and Les Paul into a Boss Katana, and proceeds to get pretty tasty scandinavian metal tones out of these. Just because he has perfected that kind of playing, and knows how to dial in a tone that works for him. Rabea is so good at that, too. It's so obvious when he's playing all different guitars in sequence and ends up sounding like different versions of himself.

I NEED THIS EPISODE!! I've been working 12 hour shifts, eating fast food and no music for two weeks. I left work 30 minutes early, just finished making a big pot of clam chowder in the Instapot while listening to Lake Street Drive. A friend suggested listening to them and they are great!!! They've been on the s stereo for the last hour while I cooked. Now, a hot shower, cozy clothes, good hot soup and the best tones on the internet.

Amazing how quickly Bea dials in "his" sound with a new pedal. Most of us would fiddle about for an hour....

When you know how pedals behave and what frequencies to look for, you can easily dial your sound quite fast. It's a matter of understanding how the whole system (pick-guitar-strings-pedals-amp) works, not just a pedal ;)

Not exactly, Bea at least demoed all of those pedals.

I don‘t necessarily love all of Rabea‘s music, but the way he plays the guitar is absolutely spectacular. So passionate and so dynamic. I always love to watch him diggin in. ❤️

I'm a high gain chug kind guy, and I have to say no bro! These tones are horrible... you all are missing the point. None of these tones seem tight and right to me.. I mean if you want muffled not articulated notes sure..all day. But for real articulated tones this is the wrong set up.

I'm really not into heavy rock or metal or this kind of music in general, but there's something about Rabea's playing that is just so captivating and inspiring - he sure is a damn impressive player. I thought the same during his pedal board build. How someone can play ambient to heavy metal and everything in between is so damn awesome! Cool dude as well. Cheers!

Many players like all the tone colors of the rainbow: cleans, fuzz, light gain, medium gain and heavy high gain. Mick and Dan u can never suck, you have made us better musicians. You have shown us all the tones possible and made some of the most gorgeuos tones along the way. Even heavy tones, different than Rabea's but essential too. Rabea spoke in the beginning my own belief about preferring using the amp's gain base and sculpting it with pedals. I love high gain tones with healthy amount of lows,mids and treble. Rabea's tone is a great one. This episode is awesome and felt like a gift from heaven. God bless u all. Live long and prosper.
