I think Germany did the whole seperation between church and government better, even in the more catholic south with christian political parties. As far as I know we never had televangelists or religious cults or sects that could influence the public on a larger scale. Even though metal may not have been particularly liked, it was portrayed in a more neutral way and not outright condemned. In the late 80s the TV channel ARD even produced a little documentary following mainly the band Kreator. They may not have quite understood the music but they realized that it was one of the many youth cultures of the time like the Neue Deutsche Welle, Punk and Goth and it was worth reporting on. Nowadays Metal-/Rock Festivals like Wacken, SummerBreeze, Rock Im Park/Rock Am Ring get airtime every year in a sometimes more sometimes less serious way. Either way, by now even most older people have realized that it's nothing bad or evil. Even though your grandma might probably not enjoy the music herself, she'll still bake you some cookies for you and your bandmates instead of burning your record collection.

People are just religious in a different way too. Germany has a lot lower quota of religious people in the first place. In the East there are even 70% to 80% atheists. Unthinkable inthe US. And there is a massive difference in how people believe. US churches hace a much more mystic, irrational approach to belief, the Geram/European way is still much more influenced by the enlightenment. Even religious people here don't necessarily believe that there are demons in Metal music that possess you when you listen to it or that angels walk on earth and lots of such things. I've been subjected to a few attempts by american evangelical missionaries in the early 90's who traveled the East trying to spread the flavours "charismatic christianity" and "reborn christians" and with all of their show they put on with speaking in tounges and whatnot they left the audience shaking their heads. Everyone went home and was like "What the fuck did I just watch? Are those guys sane?" It took me a long time to figure out what Christanity in the US and in germany are entirely different things. The Atlantik would need to be 10 times wider to symbolize the difference.
@IchWerSont4 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is, that germany has technically no seperation between church and goverment, cause the church needs to connection to the goverment to receive "Kirchensteuer" from the those that pay it. Where I agree is that there is less religious bullshit and bigotry going around.

When i was younger (about 14-18) there were a lot of shows around here. Pretty much only small local bands, but the party was always super crazy. Meeting around 2pm (concerts would start around 7), getting crates of beer, basically slowly walking through those small cities and villages to the events. Then the concerts always huge party, everyone knew each other, you knew the people in the bands and even the people from the venues. And it was always packed. Most of these events don't exist anymore. The old lads just moved away and got quiet and the youngsters don't do these things anymore. I don't know how it is in any other areas, but here it is definitely a generation thing.

Metal is still alive. I had a meet&greet with Arch Enemy last year. We were just like 10 people to meet the band and we had over 1 hour time to spend with them. Guitarist Jeff Loomis was such a nice guy, I talked a lot with him and he gave me a pick at the end of the m&g (and he only gave one to me!) and signed the Nevermore backpatch on my vest. I swear, this was one of the best days of my life, meeting my most favourite musician.

Being a roadie/technician/stagehand in the late 70's to mid 80's, i have seen and heard the most of the upcoming metal bands. It turned out, that the most "frightening characters" of the genre, have been the nicest careing humans. Lemmy Kilmister to mention as one hell of a nice guy ! I was working on two tours for him. I will never forget to put up the "Bomber" as a stage prop. " Ya guys are thirsty ?" Lemmy asked and opened the bar, handing out bottles to the crew. The Bar owner protested. " Put it on my bill", Lemmy said! Then got back to play table fussball/ kicker. Unfortunately, that time left me with a damaged eardrum. Six or eight Marshall stacks in small or medium places , i am out ! Still love "Overkill" though. ;-) Pommesgabel, Eric Krautsalat !

I think it is difficult to do big festivals in the US or getting "big" as a band in metal because people are a lot focused on making money. In Germany a lot of the smaller events are done as volunteering service from bands or friends of the musicians. It is not big from the first year, it is a growing venue. A lot musicians playing in bigger bands in Germany still need to do a regular job besides the music business. The singer of a band that was on the top of the charts a few weeks ago, still works at a hospital. A lot of bands, in my opinion, are kind of hobby-projects and their rehearsal rooms are like "mencaves". It doesn't matter if they started playing together in school and now straight looking forward their children to play together. They are still "next door" beeings and they write songs about everyday-stuff. There is no pressure to making big money with music, it is still a lot about fun. Yes, they sometimes are taking part in competitions like "REPresent" in my hometown, playing a festival and publishing a CD (Yes, they still do it), but not the big business. In 2013 "May the silence fail" were able to play at summer breeze and their dream came true which was doing a production with members of their favorite band "Ill Niño", but it is not about earning a lot of money, it is more abour reaching personal goals.

@metalheadmetalhead49764 жыл бұрын
I am not sure but I think there is not "the metal scene", but large variety of different styles of metal music with its own scene and fans. Besides well known bands like Manowar, Slayer and Metallica (this was the 80s) and Slipknot, Type O Negative or Pantera (hello from the 90s) and all those hair-metal (some of them made pretty cool music) there is a small but sophisticated traditional US-powermetal scene. Do you know bands like Eternal Champion, Visigoth, Night Demon, Syrus, Haunt and Lords Of The Trident? And there are many more. This is the "Next Generation", following well known US-powermetal-bands like Cirith Ungol, Manilla Road, Vicious Rumours, Helstar, Medieval Steel and others. Ok, some of theme became more popular than others in the past, but they all played (and some still play) great music. And compared to Manowar & Co. they have remaind "underground". Others prefer US-Black-Metal. I am not an expert in this subgenre, but I think there is also a large variety of bands. Even "christian metal" has it's own scene, from Stryper up to bands like Frost Like Ashes (I don't like their attitude, but I like their music) and Renascent (all right, this band origins from finland, but lives in the US nowadays). To come to a conclusion I think we should talk more about Heavy Metal in the US, because it's worth doing it :-) ... ah yes, you mentioned conservatives and the PMRC. They achieved that "parental advisory"-stickers in early 1990s. I can remember at that time this sticker was a "seal of quality" for many metalheads in germany too :-D ... but I am sure it wasn't funny to be under oppression by this guys. Dee Snider was angy enough about hearings at that time (and about Tipper Gore). So once again: let's talk about metal in the US!

I find it embarrassing that back then this was the genre to go after for its message, but these same groups don’t do anything about what has become modern hip hop.Yet in reality it is a retreat from all the bullshit people have to deal with but knowing someone is listening. As Rick heads we were always outcasts. But now more than ever. If you like punk, metal or just rock music in general people are gonna mess with you. And the ones that do all listen to rap. I like to think people that do this take the messages of modern rap way too seriously. At some point they decide to go ignant. You hear people say the phrase don’t poke the bear, or don’t mess with the quiet kid. Well, I was that guy in school, and I only had a few friends. And yes. We were all headbangers, and we were all driven at quite a few points to literally kick the crap out of someone or groups of people that took things too far. What can I say, other than difference creates dispute. If you look different. If you hang around people that are different. If you like different music, and don’t listen to what most of the school listens to they label you as weird, and they make it well known. I generally kept to myself and still do. Generally preferring to be alone. But what happens when people won’t leave you alone? I had to be a lot of people up in school, and even after school because they wouldn’t leave me alone. All these people fit the thug mentality. I’m not proud of what I had to do, but I had to do it.
