King Fowley is always a joy to listen to. I may disagree with 80% of his musical opinions but the man is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate in the whole scene. Thanks King! Although I will admit sometimes listening to him discuss his favorites and least favorites I wonder…Does this man even like metal? Haha just kidding.

Num Skull: 'Ritually Abused' 1988..🤘🤘 ..a highlight for me that year. Their 'problem, just like with Sadus, was that they were too brutal for your average thrash metal listener, and too thrashy for those into the burgeoning death metal scene, but I just love it! It still to this day makes me wanna randomly break stuff, when I listen to it. 🤗

A lot of 'opinions' all over the place. Agreed with some, disagreed with a lot, but in the end it is what it is: personal perceptions, experiences and tastes. My pick for major 1988 favorite: probably Slayer's South of Heaven. Very unique, special album with a lot of personality, excellent performance (10 / 10 record for me). Cheers

Great episode. What a shame I couldn't be there live. The 80s album shows are always a highlight for me. I admit, I usually appreciate it when someone has contrarian views and doesn't celebrate everything the majority likes, but I personally can't understand King's opinions on Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax - especially in the 80s - in general. Doesn't matter, it was a similar moment I had to shake my head like when Alan rated "Somewhere in Time" as a mediocre album and ranked it behind "Fear of the Dark". My personal highlights from that year were definitely MAIDEN's "Seventh Son", RIOT's "Thundersteel" and QUEENSYCHE's "Operation:Mindcrime".
@kingfowley9481

the three bands in question two of them never did anything for me (metallica/megadeth) and anthrax 'fistful' record is fantastic but they strayed and went another way which 100% lost me. to each their own. we did both love 'operation mindcrime' so we have some middle ground. cheers :)

Your guest's take on Metallica...? Woah. I guess I shall throw out my CD of Deceased that I got about a year or so ago. And it's the one with the Black Sabbath anthology Drop of Water on the cover. Not being a horror fan, one might not know what that is nor how much it means to me. But that picture was what got me to order that CD... Everyone has the right to their opinion. And mine is that King Fowley's (spelling?) opinion sucks! But he has the right to it.

@@kingfowley9481 So glad you understood my tone wasn't disparaging, rather a friendly jab in the ribs. Metallica had a way to be really thrashy and yet at the same time very melodic. Their song structures were slowly becoming what I can only describe as progressive. Progressive thrash, I suppose. The longer length as their output went along didn't discourage me from listening. Although I went backwards through their discography from Load on back. So, I have a different experience. But thinking about where they were and where they started going, I love the journey from a somewhat hardcore delivery into less thrashy and more metallic structures. They didn't necessarily abandon what they were doing, just more along the lines of maturing. With their self-titled album, they didn't really sell out to me, but knew that they couldn't do the thrashy stuff much anymore. Listen to Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets. They do not sound the same at all. I know everyone who was there from the beginning feels they sold out, but I just think they were growing their sound to what they were feeling. No longer kids, they went for what they thought was a natural route. Now adays? I think they really aren't very good any longer. Marty said that he's played Death Magnetic more than ...And Justice. Well, I cannot stand when a band who knew they were branching out with a different delivery because of their new shortcomings in the scene getting less and less hungry, tries to go back to their roots when they are no longer the same people who created the 80s material. With every subsequent album they were growing. Now they're just trying to recapture that which they naturally lost. I've heard that one cannot pretend to be something they aren't, much like trying to redo what you've done before catching lightning in a bottle. It just doesn't sit well with me. Death Magnetic's "What don't kill ya, make ya more strong" is such a devastatingly ugly glimps into something that cannot be again. Anyone has the right ot love that album if they do. But it's very strange lyrically. And Hetfield's voice just cannot do thrash now. So, your take on Kill 'Em All and going forward, I understand. But it took a while for my tastes to change. As I mentioned, I went backwards. But knowing what I know, I wish they had gone with country rather than going back. Yes, they should be making simply rock albums. But I would much rather listen to Hetfield sing a country song that to listen to their new version of thrash. Yes! Mario Bava! Love horror movies!

King Diamond Fatal Portrait is a bore fest. Totally not the 3rd MF album. MF songs were written guitar heavy, with massive riffs and structures similar to Judas Priest. KD seems the guitars take a back seat and all focus is on Kings vocals. Not a memorable riff on the album. Guitars are power metal and seem to just provide mood behind the vocals. Later King Diamond is way better. A Mansion in Darkess on Abigail is when things get better. Conspiracy is the best KD album
