Heavy Rain - Scott Shelby Endings

I have to admit... Scott Shelby was my favorite character throughout my first play through of Heavy Rain, and I was shocked and sad to find out he was the Origami Killer. I've thought about it more since I found that out though, and decided that he is still my favorite character. Yes, he's really f-ed up. His reasons to harm these innocent children are COMPLETELY unjustified, no matter what happened to him. But you could tell that, if he wasn't traumatized as a kid, he'd be an amazing man.

I love scott shelby regardless of who he really is. He's a very likeable character with a nice sense of humour. In the last scene when he fights jayden, if you choose to save scott, he'll thank you and say: "thanks, that was close" before he tries to betray jayden and push him over. Basically he can find humour even in tense situations. Not to mention that shoot out scene where he drives through kramer's house with a pissed off murderous look in his eyes, shoots the first guy he meets without even looking at him and then proceeds to shoot down all of kramer's bodyguards singlehandedly was pretty badass. Scott is also proof that you don't have to be young, handsome and slim to be a likeable main character.

I suspected Madison as the killer for most of the game as she seemed to be stalking Ethan and always checked in after one of his trials. But I like it when I'm wrong and the twist comes as a surprise. I never suspected Shelby but when it happened it made so much sense. There should have been an additional ending with a news report of another child going missing.

I suspected originally that the killer was Gordi Kramer. When he met Shelby, he claimed he was the killer, and I assumed that most people would view this as a swerve. However, I was thinking that was an attempt at a red herring, and that at the end, he was telling the truth. I suspected him until Madison and Ms. Shepherd met in the hospital and she whispered the killer's name in her ear. Because she looked to recognize the name, I was immediately assuming that it actually was Ethan ... another red herring throughout the game. So I was definitely surprised to find out it was Scott Shelby, and I think the game did a great job keeping you guessing. Especially when Shelby was in the typewriter shop and he "found" the old man dead. The camera was on him the whole time so I never imagined they were going to swerve you like that and make the actual live gameplay a false occurrence of what happened. So again, kudos to the game.

+MystikWizard Actually, the camera loses track of him for a small amount of time. The screen focuses on Lauren messing with the music box, but the amount of time is pretty small, not long enough for him to realistically have done what he did. However, if you check his thoughts, he intones a lot longer has passed than the few seconds we were shown (he notes the old guy seems to have been gone for quite a long while now, and to go check on him)

This whole scene makes no sense at all so I have no idea what you're giving them kudos for. Shelby comes into the back of the shop to find Manfred dead, upon which his eyes widen and he has to cover his mouth with his hand, even though there is absolutely nobody around him to witness it. Not only that, he would need to be Speedy fucking Gonzales to make it through killing Manfred, browsing through his books and then calling the police within a mere 14 seconds. Then we also have the infamous internal monologuing of Shelby that pretty much proves to the gamer that he's _not_ the killer just because David Cage couldn't write a convincing plot twist. Or the fact that the only reason why he kills Manfred is so Lauren doesn't connect the dots between him and John Sheppard but they never would have come there in the first place if it weren't for Shelby's fat ass not being able to keep quiet about who might give any clues about the text on the envelope.

I think you're confusing a good twist with a forced one. Of course you never suspected Shelby, the game did everything to make him look super innocent, he even had innocent thoughts where he was acting innocent to himself. Not fooling anyone, just flat out lying to the viewer. It's the most cheap twist I've ever seen in a video game.

I would have been tricked by the whole thing, but I realised it during the brawl. I was called away from the TV, and hadn't paused by accident. As such, the game continued onto the next character, and I assumed I had just left Scott to die and continued.....then he's suddenly perfectly fine in his next segment......wtf? Tested it again in the car, but again, he wouldn't drown.....then I realised, if this guy is scene immortal, it means he MUST survive to the finale.....which means he must be the Origami Killer. I was spoiled due to game play mechanics and being genre savvy XP

Scott Shelby was a decorated police officer who lived in the same city as Madison, who's a journalist. It's always possible she might have interviewed him when he retired from the police force.

i still feel some sympathy for Shelby, even though he killed he lost his brother when his father didn't care about his brother drowning and that shelby was too young to save his brother and he was struggling to believe that every father just revels in children suffering, he wanted to believe that maybe a father could sacrifice anything to save his son which was ethan ans shaun, and that when ethan dies in one of the endings and shaun is alive, he is standing there looking at shaun thats why.

I wish there was a way to get the ending where Lauren kills Scott without any of the others dying. It seems poetic justice that the man who murdered her son and ruined her life gets his reckoning from one of the people who he himself victimized. It wouldn’t be appropriate in real life, and she will probably go to prison even though he deserved it. But for a story, it seems bitter yet satisfying

I think, compared to the likes of Baker and Mad Jack, Shelby is more sympathetic as he actually hates killing people, and by extension, drowning the children, and he only does it to accomplish his goal, which is to find a father capable of saving his son. And besides, Shelby genuinely felt sad and remorseful, when he was with Lauren, Susan and Hassan, the mothers and the father of their children who drowned, he can even choose to help them in the chapters that they appear, which I believe he would. It's probably a gameplay mechanic to make him look "good" because he wasn't revealed as the killer yet, but I genuinely believe Scott saved Lauren, Susan and Hassan, because he wanted to do the right thing. I'm not saying that makes him noble or anything, but at the very least, it doesn't make him as heartless, as he seems to be at first. Scott is more on the morally grey area.

I adored Scott Shelby as a character regardless of the atrocities he did but at least he did some good things like save a mother from suicide and preventing her baby from perishing. He saved Lauren because he probably felt guilty about killing her son. I think there should of been an ending where Scott gets arrested and Madison was able to reason with him and Scott helps save Shaun. But ah well it didn't happen and at least the other characters lived and Scott gets put out of his misery.

***** Old comment, but I haven't seen anyone else mention this-- Isn't the most logical explanation for Shelby watching Kramer Jr. is because his Dad's the one who was basically responsible for John's death? Shelby seems unreasonably obsessed with revenge ~to the point that the plot just basically falls apart by the end of the game,~ it makes sense that Shelby would do anything possible to piss off Kramer. He's a petty killer. Still, this is kind of a loose explanation since Kramer does leave flowers on John's grave and seems to really feel bad about it even after 30 years, but fuck it, Shelby isn't one to easily forgive and forget if he's still killin' kids and torturin' parents. Also, Shelby seems to have a good sense of basic morals besides y'know, murdering children horribly-- He sets up Ethan to kill a pretty bad drug dealer specifically. It's a perfect crime plan for someone who thinks he's in the right. Why Shelby being the killer is complete fucking nonsense is his way of doing things is really stupid. He punishes kids to punish the adults and then he kills both the adults and kids, and what does he get out of it? Absolutely fucking nothing. BUT THEN HE SUCCEEDS! THEN HE GETS WHAT HE WANTS! All you have to do is make sure that Scott survives the warehouse to the end of the game (whether that means no one making it there to save Shaun or everyone who does show up failing), AND make sure that Lauren is saved in "Trapped". As long as they're both alive at the end, that will happen.
