Can a lighter rider on a lightweight EMTB keep up with a heavy rider of a full-power EMTB? Steve Jones is out in the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre testing this theory with a series of challenges to find out!

Unfortunately there are still more than enough dentists out there who are willing to fork out this kind of cash for bikes that are simply nowhere close to justifying such a price tag (mainly people who you will never see out riding…). It makes it really crap for the rest of us, and drives prices up through the roof!

My idea I believe 😂😂 I did exactly the same today at landegla 17 miles me on the EXE and my younger mate on a trek rail 625 . The exe held its own . The trek rail was in EMTB all day . I changed power modes depending on terrain. . Downs much more fun onEXE slightly lost out on steeper climbs . Exe way better on flatter trails . 15 percent left on exe 35 percent on the trek rail. . I’m 57 so no excuses steve 😂😂😂

On our club rides, we have riders of all ages, fitness levels and on (e)bikes. Not problem at all. Personally I often ride my trail hardtail and my way older cousin is always on his full power ebike. Sure he smokes me up and down, if he wishes to, but he needs to pace himself because my stamina can outlast his battery 🤪 so most of the time we are riding at the same speed while chatting 🤟🏾 when climbing.

e-bikes are brilliant for this reason. My mate is heavier and less fit while I'm a lot lighter and fitter, but we can ride together at the same pace as he uses trail mode and I stay on eco. On analog bikes I'd be waiting for him a lot so it makes the ride a lot more sociable.

My friend and ride together all the time, I have a 2018 Xduro 7.0 500wh intube with a Bosch cx 75nm and I'm 19 stone and 58yrs. He has a Levo sl 35nm and he is 45yrs and 12 stone. On Blue or gravel trail we are even but on reds, I've very slightly got the edge but I run out of battery way before he does. I think I would need a 625wh batt and 85nm and a large bottle 'fountain of youth' spring water to give me a real unfair advantage. His SL is a great bike, I have rode it and it's far quicker on single track than my Xduro.

I bought the comp carbon Levo. I weigh 179. I also bought a Genius 910 (no power). Get the full power if you have no experience . I am pretty athletic for 52. The full power is enjoyable and can tackle just about anything. I got a no power bike to do both so I can train and see the difference. The power definitely matters.... It definitely is a big difference and you still get a workout because the bike is heavier (approx 19 lbs).

I know I moan on every video about not having one and no hope of getting one but its because I need an answer,I need to know how its fair that someone who hasnt been mounting biking like me from the mid 80"s can have a full sus capable ebike just cos they find the magical thing in life of money. The answer you're looking for is .... attitude. It's a self fulfilling prophecy, keep telling yourself that you won't have an emtb and you will probably always be right. However, if you start to look at ways in which you CAN get an emtb then you will undoubtedly find a way. So Instead of me just trying to sound like a guru and patronising twat (that's me, not you), why bot use your vast experience of mountain bikes to buy and sell bikes at a profit? You are probably capable of making relatively cheap upgrades and fixes to bikes to sell on at a profit. Once you have a few quid you can start by doing the same with second hand emtb's. There is a massive opportunity for second sales in emtb's and this just might be for you. Good luck! ❤️

As a fit person with a mid power, I can firmly say there is absolutely no reason to have full power. Keep in mind fit riders still predominantly ride analog bikes and simply don't need all that power when we can produce hundreds of watts on their own. I have a mid-power big suspension and don't even use the stock highest power mode. Rather I choose to use custom profiles that mimic my CC bike in the lower power mode and then something more aggressive on the higher modes to do killer technical climbs. The appeal of the mid power is having tons of suspension with no weight penalty. So the comparison you should be making is fit mid power riders to analog only riders and how can a mid power make you more fit. Hint, I often ride my mid power with the battery turned off, and recovery days are much more fun.

Nice vid, but obvious. Power to weight ratio (with the bike). I ride full fat at 90 kg and my wife an SL with 30 kg less. She however likes more cardio effort so works perfect. On a mid power would be verry comparable even to her benefit. She hates full fats they feel way to heavy for her , weight of bike to rider ratio also counts in the experience.
