I have I’m 58 worked on loads of these back in the day ...😎 like you said vintage not worth the trouble John ..

Does seem very well built compared to what we get today. Can't see a Polar one lasting that long!

I hope the unit was free, off to the scrapper you go!

Yes, it was cheap apart from my work which isn't!

I used to get this type of call all the time I have now stopped myself from the used beater calls.

Its for an existing customer, advised them not to buy it, combined the visit with servicing their milk tank so not a total loss!

When I see wiring like that I'd be tempted to just cut all that shit out and rewire it all myself from scratch. If the compressors worked that is though. It looks like a decent cabinet, probably better than the modern ones!
@heavydiesel6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was told it worked so went with the rewire first, should have just wago'ed the wires to get it all to run first to see if it was worth the effort. I think I'd fix it if it was mine, its better build than anything available now

Id974 is my favorite controller.Defrost relay can pull 8A
@heavydiesel6 ай бұрын
Don't get me wrong, they always do their job. I think I had issues with one back when I was an apprentice and took an irrational dislike to them more due to my ignorance than the device itself! I might pick one up next time I'm at the wholesalers and give the ID974 another chance!

Thanks again heavydiesel very cool interesting Cool what the megger do up there connecting to the pipe cool very well interesting

Yeah the system seemed a bit earthy at 0.6 megaohms but ran ok, apart from not cooling...

If you’re returning with compressors then id be tempted to fit a delay timer to the compressors so they don’t both come in at once. Thats a lot of start amps for a 13a fuse
@heavydiesel6 ай бұрын
Thats a good idea! If they go ahead with fixing it I'll fit a relay for each compressor and time delay the second one.

I like that small linishing tool! Was that contractor complaining about available voltage/amps for it's coil?! Were you doing a 'dim bulb' (resistor) setup with the extension line? Very interesting. (I don't do refrigeration at all but I always want to understand more about high and low amperage real-world problems and your videos are great! Also I respect refrigeration far too much to ignore - that stall-out was funny)

I think the fridge has been stood outside in all weathers for a while looking at it. Inside the contactor you have a fixed iron segment like a giant E, and another E with the contacts on, the coil pulls the two E's together to make an 8 shape and make the electrical connections. If the two E's can't pull together fully due to dirt etc the contactor will buzz as in this case, if it was a volts drop issue the contactor would have gone quiet when both the compressors tripped out on their klixons.

Is that a variable speed vacuum pump running in the background? It's a noisy bugger!
@heavydiesel6 ай бұрын
Yes, Gascoigne I think.
@glenjones44044 ай бұрын
I wouldn't even fit new compressors to that as the evapcoils due to being a williams pitted and have leaks due to the age of it Was williams related to foster or foster brought them out back in the day ????
@heavydiesel2 ай бұрын
I think Williams and Foster were two separate companies but could be wrong, always felt Williams were slightly better than Foster.

Could the voltage drop from the hot extension lead have caused it to cut out on internal overload? Just a thought. Unfortunately I’m not sure many engineers would even have entertained it. (Or have been able to!) Thanks for sharing. :)
@heavydiesel6 ай бұрын
It could do, but according to the plug in amp thingy I had 240 ish volts so should be enough to run it.
@ianbanner37906 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video. What make is that plug in amp thingy that would be useful and save a lot of time . Thanks.

I've checked it and theres no makers name on it, I got it on Amazon might be worth a look on there.

These projects always become time bandits. I feel your pain. Trying to make pork from pig shit.

Exactly! Takes time to make it safe enough to put power to before you find it don't work!
