When starting a 2 stroke Detroit for the first time in any considerable time, you need to pull the valve cover and be sure the rack and injectors aren’t stuck anyway cause if she gets fuel and they’re stuck she’ll start running away. It’s advisable to have vice grips locked on the rack already to shut her down in the event of a runaway or a fast means of killing air if it doesn’t have a kill flap

The 2 stroke Diesels definitely won't run without the blower. They don't work like small 2 stoke engines in dirt bikes, there is no air on the bottom side of the piston. So when the piston gets to the bottom of the stroke and uncovers the intake ports there is nothing to push the air into the cylinder. So there needs to be an air pump to push the air in. That's where the scavenge pump or what you would call the supercharger comes in. The 8-71 blowers are actually called that because Detroit's are 71 cubic inch per cylinder. So 8-71 is for 8 cylinders and a large enough pump to work for that engine. It wasn't until later hot rodders took them and retrofitted them to gas motors to use as superchargers.

You guys are working with a couple of rare old engines here, the one in the Pettibone is a 51 series Detroit that actually has no intake or exhaust valves, the cam only actuates the injectors. It uses liner ports for both intake and exhaust, the 53 series that replaced it had exhaust valves. The fuel truck has a J series Cummins which were built in the 1950's and 60's. I worked on a few in old crane trucks.

Dave enjoy your content. With Allen on the project, I am surprised to hear the Detroit scavengers blower called a super charger. Any kid visiting a dragstrip has seen the Detroit 671 blower used to supercharge an engine. It is common to turbocharge diesel engines to increase their power. Cat was one of the first. I have rebuilt older equipment, built when diesel fuel was 9 cents per gallon. It was the Cat D47U with the PTO Hyster winch.

Million air never did military fueling, only GA or commercial. That old 8k is either a garsite or Wilco built truck. Some had Detroit 6V53's but others had Perkins or Cummins depending on age. That's a 600gpm system, usually, for the fueling side. Probably a Cotta split drive with Gorman Rupp pump, but it could also be a Hale (not as common). Good luck with the air system... Not many operators want a truck that old, at least in the USA.
