great interview al i think holmes is greatest ever. all anyone needs to do is look at what douglas did to tyson to know what larry would of done to tyson in his prime.just with a more devastating jab

Holmes is a great heavyweight champion, had one of the longest reign in heavyweight history. He retired rich and still has most of his money.

My first ever fight I watched on tv was Holmes vs Ali. I was only 7 years of age and I watched it at my grandparents house with both my grand parents. And I remember after saying he’s my favourite heavyweight. I then got into boxing five years later at the start of 1985 and I’ve been a fan ever since. To me 1985 was the best year for world championship boxing. It was such a big year for the sport in that ever so great / we took it for granted boxing decade. Holy Hanna we didn’t realize how big that decade of boxing would become in years to come. I finally got to tick off one of my biggest bucket lists of my life and that was to shake Marvelous Marvin haglers ( very big right hand ✋) @ the 2012 international boxing hall of fame when Thomas the Hitman Hearns got inducted and so did Al beirnstein . What a great weekend. I told Marvin “ I don’t want your autograph ✍️ all I want it to shake that hand of yours. I’ll be nearly 40 years of age soon and I’ve been wanting to shake your hand since 1985 as I was a 12 year old then living in Leeds,West Yorkshire England.” I now live in New Brunswick, Canada 🇨🇦

Shame Holmes doesn't get the credit he deserves, on the other hand, most fighters who earned more money than him and name recognition ended up broke...

He gets more recognition than he's deserving of. His incessant whining means he's overcompensated for his achievements now. The man crows about not getting any respect but rarely shows any to other fighters.

Doesn't deserve more. He avoided Pinklon Thomas, G.Coetzee & M.Dokes. Dokes is remembered for his past prime bouts, but was tremendous in his prime. Instead he gave title shots to Marvis Frazier, Scott Frank & Lucien Rodriguez. Gift decision vs Witherspoon & never rematched him. Holmes was good, but deserved no more credit than he got.

I'm a Holmes fan since 1978 and I always will be. But I don't buy that he doesn't get credit. Every boxing fan ranks him with the alltime greats. Besides that, Holmes himself hardly gives anyone credit. While praising his own opponents he's mostly negative of those that came after him. Often it's the case what you give, is what you get...

God, I just wrote pretty much the same thing before I saw your post! Great minds, eh?

@@tlig Nice! I'm a real Holmes fan but I don't like his never ending whining about not getting credit. First give some credit! Holmes said you wouldn't have heard of Mike Tyson if he fought in the seventies. Why not? IMO he would've KOed Ken Norton just as easy as Foreman did. Tyson knocked out Tervor Berbick in two rounds, Holmes went 15 with him. When Micheal Spinks got knocked out in 90 seconds by Tyson he was a far more developed and experienced heavyweight than at the time he went twice 15 rounds with Holmes. So there is no reason to belittle Tyson.

@Your Neighbor I don't think Larry is a narcissist but he is when it concerns boxing. And he's not the only one of his generation. Larry feels he should be the GOAT. Anyone who rates him lower doesn't give him the credit he feels he deserves.

Holmes is a phoney heavyweight champion in the second half of his reign After he decided to give up his WBC title rather than defend against any top contenders and boxers he deemed dangerous. The appearance of the then new IBF saved him from losing his “title”, and allowed him to still brag he had been undefeated, i.e., until he got a gift decision and was busted up against an inexperienced newbie Carl the truth Williams. Holmes has great fighting spirit and skilled yes, but a little overrated by his fans.
