I am an Asst. Professor of history at City College in Calcutta, India. I have done my PhD on the Calcutta Jewish Community and also went for a fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. I can read and write Hebrew. This is the best video on elementary Hebrew I have ever come across. I would like to know more about the language and its rich vocabulary. I write a little bit of poetry myself and would be interested in translating poetry from simple Hebrew into English. Hebrew is more than a language. It is the living soul of the Jewish people and the embodiment of three millennia heritage. I fervently hope that Hebrew would become more user-friendly for people like us who are interested to get into the nuances of the language. Shalom

It's the same for all Duolingo courses with non-Latin scripts, to my knowledge. You're forced to learn quickly. Transliterating Hebrew (representing Hebrew in Latin script) wouldn't be very helpful and might simply be confusing.

Good to remember that once you learn the letters Hebrew is phonetic. In Israel as I was standing in front of a fast-food restaurant, I wanted to pronounce the names shown. The word for Kosher I knew as clearly as I know how to read the English word "Kosher." But the longer word -- well, then I remembered the phonetic. I pronounced each letter and Voila! McDonalds. People around me also laughed and I felt pleased to have figured it out (in spite of the obvious arches) In Hebrew there is no word for that name so it's simply done with the letters as would be said in English. It was fun reading the signs around the country - but, sad to say, I only knew the meanings of the ones I knew. "Israel" - for instance. "Jerusalem" - another instance. Have fun!

This is the most thorough video introduction to Hebrew I've ever seen, but it's only accurate for Modern Hebrew pronunciation. Biblical Hebrew and the traditional pronunciations of Middle Eastern Jewish communities preserved many distinctions between letters that Modern Hebrew has simplified to make learning the language easier for non-native speakers. Unfortunately, however, an increasing number of Israelis are unaware of this fact.

Is "American Hebrew" really incorrect? So many Jews live here and it's a very happy country for Hebraism. I wonder...could Daniel have developed an accent in the court of the King?
@risafey7 жыл бұрын
Almost like if anyone in another country were teaching English, they'd obviously be speaking with the accent of their own country? Would you consider their English "incorrect"?
@asher57226 жыл бұрын
It's not the same as English were it's easy to understand different accents. It's literally impossible to understand some of what she is saying in hebrew. You should learn from a native speaker instead

Thank you so much for this! I'm currently studying an introductory module in biblical Hebrew and am still at the stage of struggling to learn the alphabet; it is going in, but slowly. It's good to have this resource available as a quick reference (and to be able to hear how the letters are pronounced properly rather than just seeing a textual approximation on the page of a textbook is invaluable).

Hebrew is GOD'S language and more so called Christians should have a desire to learn this beautifully deep language. Thanks for the introduction. Oh yeah Messiah is coming if you would like to know when,please go to The Rapture puzzle by Renee M on KZbin so that you can understand where we are on God's timeline.

b.s. so you pronounce words like גדולה as Gedolah? I don't think so

@@saar144 sometimes yes but i think that schva is not entirely absent in modern hebrew. In pronounciation you obviously say gdolah and rarely gedolah (casually).

Christians do not worship Jesus. They praise YHWH through Jesus.

Lord Jesus ['I AM'] mainly spoke Aramaic, common both in his time as well as his surroundings. I love Hebrew. // Thanks for this excellent intro!

***** He isn't "weaker" in another verse and in need -- it was his intention to die in that manner, because it fulfills the prophecy that a man perfect in the law would be slain as an offering from YHWH to man (instead of man offering a perfect sacrifice to YHWH). Christians praise YHWH through the sacrifice of Jesus, as a way that YHWH created righteousness despite the law, whereas before there was only righteousness by obedience to the law.

Looks like a good writing system to me! Like Finnish or Korean! There are rules! No spelling contests! Everything is clear! Maybe a bit difficult in BEGINNING, but if you master those things, it is going to be easy! Sounds good to me! But hey, grammar is (western)semitic. All words have so called "roots". You can derive all the the words from those consonant-based "roots". Nouns, adjectives, etc.. Pronouncation does not seem too difficult.
