No particular reason I know of. It's not uncommon to run across seeming mismatches of number in the Hebrew text where things aren't as "regular" as we might expect.

It is a grammar word that marks the direct objects that are definite. We have a video with some examples of when and when not to use it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafUmmB6e9h7sLs You can also find more information in a Hebrew grammar.

The word את is actually two different words: a direct object marker, and the word "with". The difference can be seen when adding a pronomial suffix like "him": the former will become "oto" while the latter will become "itto"...

Hello Beth, I am probably missing something obvious, but do prepositions always take plural suffixes? I can see that the word for face is plural so that if you said in front of, that would be a plural word, but does this also apply for behind and other prepositions?
@AlephwithBeth
@AlephwithBeth 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the preposition. Some take plural suffixes like אֶל־, אַחֲרֵי , לִפְנֵי, עַל־, תַּחַת While others take singular suffixes like עִם, אֶת־, ל, ב

So good. It's really starting to stand out to me that verb forms are more similar across third, second or first person. Whenever I tried to study them before, I always wrote the singular paradigm first, and then the plural, but now I'm realizing that was only because of coming from an English-language background. Hearing them like this, my brain is able to let the words "sort themselves"!

Hi Beth and Andrew. I am a little bit confused of the difference between "above her" and "above you"--- masculine. It sounds the same to me--- "Aleha". Can you give the Hebrew spelling and transliteration. If you may, you may also do for other terms like "lefneyha"-in front of her and in front of you (masculine). Bevakasha. Toda raba.
@AlephwithBeth
@AlephwithBeth 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlo, Above/on her עָלֶיהָ has heh ה pronounced like an h in English: 'aléha, just a soft breathing out sound. IPA symbol is [h] Above/on you (masc.sg.) עָלֶיךָ has kaf ך pronounced like kh (or like the ch in German Bach) 'alékha: a harsher guttural sound vibrating the uvula in the throat. IPA symbol is [χ] That will be the same difference for lots of other prepositions and pronominal suffixes.

@@AlephwithBeth Hi Andrew and Beth. Thanks for emphasizing "on her/upon her" (not only "above her") on the preposition "Al". I appreciate it very much. But I have another question. Is there a difference in pronunciation when i speak in modern hebrew or in biblical hebrew in this case? It is because i heard someone who said (or teaching) "aleya" not "aleha" when she pronounced "on her" or "of her". This maybe a difference between modern and biblical hebrew. Toda.
@AlephwithBeth
@AlephwithBeth 3 жыл бұрын
That may be a difference between Modern and Biblical Hebrew, I'm not sure. My experience with Modern Hebrew is pretty limited, so I haven't necessarily heard all the pronunciation variants you'll hear from Modern Hebrew speakers.
