Thanks again for the great lessons!! At 13:50, I am not sure to understand. Can you please help me? "Boaz laqah et rut vathi lo leisshah" is unclear to me. How can we understand the presence of "vathi" between "Boaz laqah et rut" and "lo leisshah". I would have understood if it had been "Boaz took Ruth as his wife, and Ruth was his wife" (2 propositions, instead of one as it is now). Can you please let us know? Thanks again. Marion

A literal translation in English would be: "Boaz took Ruth and she was to him as a wife." The construction with the verb "hayah" and a lamed preposition usually means "to become" so vatehi lo le-ishah is better translated "she became a wife to him" or "she became his wife."

So is the ק in ancient pronunciation equivalent to the ق sound that is pronounced at the top of the throat or is it like a regular k sound? It would be nice to hear a comparison of ancient and modern pronunciation. I speak Arabic and am learning both modern and ancient Hebrew with an emphasis on ancient.

We're also not aiming at reproducing ancient pronunciation exactly how people think it sounded. You can find out more about why we do what we do at our website freehebrew.online. Hey Ruben! That's a great question to Google! We see our job as teachers to help you figure things out slowly through repetition and context in our videos. Hebrew has this habit of using plurals to emphasize. So bah-hey-mote could mean "animals" but it could also mean "one great animal". Basically, an animal so magnificant it has the value of several animals. Elohim, therefore, is like calling God so wonderful that he's just as good as many gods. That's how you can think of it anyway, the rule is simply that sometimes a plural is meant to exaggerate instead of say there's more than one

Hola chicos que bendición el trabajo que están haciendo por medio de sus vídeos en KZbin. Les escribo para comentarles que yo estudio griego en el «Seminario Bíblico de Colombia» y próximamente empezaré con hebreo bíblico, yo he estado aprendiendo el griego por medio su estructura gramatical y desde allí poder traducir (aquí es donde entra mi pregunta) ¿Por qué ustedes enseñan hebreo bíblico para prenderlo por medio de la adquisición subconsciente y no desde su forma gramatical? ‛no digo que está mal su metodología’ solo que me interesa saber, ¿porque aprender una lengua que no se habla hoy día tal cual que en los tiempos bíblicos, y que a fin de cuentas nuestro objetivo es poder traducir la Escritura desde su idioma original «no hablar-lo»?

Hi - Question: how do we know what ancient biblical Hebrew words mean? I am not referring to using a lexicon - rather what sources do we have for original meaning? I have attempted to find an answer online without success. In other words, how did Strong (et al) establish definitions? How sure can we be that the meaning(s) we currently ascribe to Hebrew words is accurate?

Hi Mike, the more times a word occurs in the Hebrew Bible, the more sure we can be that we understand its meaning correctly because we can see its semantic range through all the contexts in which it occurs, so for the majority of words this question isn't an issue. The tricky ones are words that occur only once or twice. For these there are a number of factors we can weigh, including the traditional understanding of the passage, the semantic context of the passage, ancient translations into other languages (like the Septuagint), and cognate words in ancient languages related to Biblical Hebrew.
