Bill Thurston was one of thee most imaginative & creative presenters I have ever heard lecture. His presentations tell a story, take you on an adventure and get you to consider things in a unique way that help you to grasp abstract concepts. Only a truly gifted mind can teach in such a way. Bill is loved, missed and I am thankful to KZbin for the privilege of having access to these lectures. ✨💖✨

Please do not allow "sound quality" in the first few minutes to deter you from watching this video. The person who is introducing Thurston simply isn't wearing a microphone. Thurston does. If you actually take the time to WATCH the video the sound quality of the actual lecture is fine.

Thurston as mathematician did great things to me , in topology and geometrical entropy too.

Thanks three- dimensional geometry and topology are important .

One of the most brilliant minds I have ever come across. I feel privileged to know of him. To listen to him speak.

"Mathematics foundation is the creativity of the human brain" - well, this is a paraphrase of what he says; and, I agree. This is what I've come to think of as well. Any more gets too detailed for now.

+oker59 boy, W. Thurston really struggles with thinking about the nature and origins of mathematics!I wish I could show him my connections between James Burke's connections(some of them), and Jacob Bronowski's ideas, in his "Origin of Knowledge and Imagination."

+oker59 wwwscientifichumanism.blogspot.com/2011/04/origin-and-nature-of-mathematical.htmlmy origin and nature of mathematical knowledge. I have another insight since then. I note that there's constituent relations and logical relations; constituent relations are more like the concrete relations that one sees in the James Burke connections noted in my article. Logical relations are more like the software versions of the relations, as in mathematics

If that's all you took away from this you simply don't have the heart nor the mind for it.

Furthermore, you obviously did not take the time to watch far enough to hear Thurston speak. He is wearing a microphone and the audio is much more clear.

Never have understood why a poorly presented lesson like this reaches "mythical" status. Twenty minutes in, I see a poor presentation technique, poor graphical images, a disjointed speaking style, and difficulty with even basic teaching skills. After 30 minutes in, I don't find it creative at all. The topic can be presented in a much more interesting and professional manner. Maybe start out with using the terms, intrinsic and extrinsic as part of the discussion. The topic is interesting but this instructor is not.
