Never saw this vid of yours before. I did look at the Hebridean long before I went for the Atlantic series I went for. Cost was a huge impact for me at that time; however time for building and installing also had an impact. The Atlantic guys allowed me to pay in lump sums( ( 3/4/500 euros a time) which helped immensely) I will always say a solo /short handed sailor/ small crewed needs a wind vane self steering for long passages .electric tiller pilots are great under engine for the first and last few miles but wind steering systems are essential. Great video. Your enthusiasm at your hard work building and installing this setup ( a feat in itself !) we’re heard as you kept your course. Bravo sir ! Bravo 👏 Plus it adds value to your vessel if ever you sell it lol.

Yes, she will be for sale soon. Taking a break from filming to regroup before the final round of maintenance..

I certainly agree with you on the complexity of the instruction manual. I had to read and study each sentence several dozen times. Still a little confused about the optimal position of the two counterweights. Hopefully during my own sea trials, I'll figure it out.

You can get a course changer too with that Hebridean save you leaning out over the stern.

How would it perform in heavy weather? Is it robust/tough?
@SVRoquetta2 жыл бұрын
Very well, and very tough. If you look at my recent jester Azores challenge videos, they are are all Hebridean wind vane, in some pretty bad weather

I’ve been looking at the Herbriean design for years. Your enthusiasm motivated me to place an order with John. I like the way you mounted the unit on the rudder. That looks like it will work for my Contessa 26. Seems like it’s tracking very nicely. Have you noticed any drawbacks to mounting it on the rudder?
@SVRoquetta2 жыл бұрын
Sorry it took so long for me to find and reply to your comment! Nope, no drawback to mounting it there, it works just fine. Have you built yours now?

Thanks for the videos. I am building one now and it will go on a 40 double ender ketch. I see the lines to the tiller from the outriggers are not in-line with the lines then going to the trunk.....does that put a lot of strain on the outrigger pivots? Have you noticed any stress movement in the brackets? The plans show the pivot at the deck level, but like you, my transom hung rudder and tiller arrangement will require it to be above deck a bit....does that change anything else important? Looking forward to having some fun with it... Cheers

I see what you mean, it doesn't seem to produce any extra wear (azores and back) on the pivots.

I don't sell them mate, they are made by the Hebridean wind vane company and sold as a kit

I have just binge watched all you episodes over the past few days and just want to say a big thank you for sharing. I am in the process of buying my first boat and an older boat of similar age. I am definitely glad I came across your videos. Do you have a wind sensor at the top of the mast for measuring wind speed...Im pretty sure I havent seen one. Apart form you r depth sounder do you have any other electrics as in already mentioned wind and speed log or are you just using GPS data off your tablet. Im of the opinion that the more sensors and electronics you have the more there is to go wrong so best to keep it simple. Also how are you topping up your house batteries, just by running the engine? Funnily enough you have gone the exact same route I was planning with the Standard Horison 2200E VHF and then Yakar wifi to Navionics on the tablet. Have you found any issues or downsides so far, Any further recommendations? I am also thinking of keeping the boat in the Plymouth area, are there long waiting lists for swing moorings and can you recommend anywhere to try in the local vicinity? Sorry lots of questions but on these subjects you seem to be the best person to ask. Keep up the good work and the Azores sounds like a great plan for June if it comes off.

I’m very happy to hear that this channel been helpful or inspiring, so thank you for watching and putting up with my lame videography efforts! No wind instrument, you are correct. The yakker remains the best investment apart from the radio and I’m very pleased with it. Join the Facebook ‘twister 28 worldwide’ group and send a friend request to the admin (that’s me) then we can chat about moorings...

It’s funny, I got the electric autopilot going at the last bit, and the first thing it did was blow a fuse. Really brought it home. A good investment 👍

Hello, sorry if its been asked before, but what made you choose a twister 28? Enjoying your videos. Thanks Jim
@SVRoquetta3 жыл бұрын
Lots of things... an active owners association, it’s easily handled single handed. A classic is welcome everywhere, reputation for being very seaworthy. I think that before I knew all of that I saw the boat out of the water and loved the shape of the hull 👌

Sorry to bother you again, but how do you find the twister 28 handles maneuvering around in small harbours or marina's? Jim
@SVRoquetta3 жыл бұрын
@@JR-fd8eq like a pussy cat. It’s a long keeled boat, so takes a bit of getting used to - and forward planning. I notice that the wind age of a twister is about half that of a comparable modern floating caravan, that makes a real difference in tight spaces and adverse weather

Wake line looks straight. I guess you may see a bit of wander on navionics but not enough to worry about. Good job!

A quick thought if you are planning long distances. I suggest you make a spare wind vane. Mine has a slot and I could easily see it falling off, best regards Peter
