Originally released in November 1953. Directed by Eddie Donnelly; story by Tom Morrison (who's also the voice of "Horace"); music by Philip A. Scheib. Roy Halee provided the magpies' voices. Jim Tyer is the lead animator.....

The real "original version" would have been about a minute longer than this TV print.

When I was a kid in the 50’s and 60’s I never picked up the racist vibe that these were essentially Amos and Andy, and I don’t think it was a coincidence that the opening scene featured a water fountain.

Maybe some of the episodes, when they imitate black voices. In this one, they stick to Canarsie and English accents.

There's more of an edge to their tricks than Bugs or Daffy's. Also, one of them in some episodes has a female voice, which then switches back to male. NTTAWWT!

USA Network used to show cartoons in the 1980's and 90's in the morning and afternoon, but mostly morning. But it stopped show cartoons around 2000. I kind of miss USA Network showing cartoons. I don't mind if USA Network start showing cartoons again probably around the 2020's or 2030's.

The chase involving doors in a hallway starting at 4:10 is a classic. For some reason, I get the impression that there is something slightly subversive about Terry Toons from this era; when I watch them, I always feel a little "dirty". Oh, and the border graphics for the opening titles are just, well . . . crappy. It's like mid-century modern sensibility with all the aesthetic integrity sucked out.

Who's Heckle and who's Jeckle?
@inspectorcloseau788 жыл бұрын
You Never Heard of Heckle and Jeckle The Talking Magpies ???. It's a 1940's Animation Created by Paul Terry The Animator and Founder of Terrytoons Unfortunately Sponsorship Put The Brakes On this Classic Naturally Due to The Racial Content . Anyway The Difference Between Heckle and Jeckle is Heckle Spoke with a Brooklynese and Jeckle Spoke with a British Accent...
@antoniod7 жыл бұрын
WHAT racial content? Heckle and Jeckle lasted on TV for years and simply ran it's course.
@inspectorcloseau787 жыл бұрын
What Racial Content ? Like The Fact it was Offensive to The African Americans and Years Lter When it was On Reruns On WPIX 11 Alive it Ran for Only 2 or 3 Years and Replaced with Hector Heathcoat.

Heckle and Jeckle are Birds with Black Feathers, not Stereotype African Americans! Do they talk like Black stereotypes? Sylvester the Cat has black fur-is he supposed to be "Black"? Is Daffy Duck "Black"?.

@billmcdonnell795 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I don't think they're even brothers or related to each others. I think they just very close friends who look really alike. The only real difference between them is their voices. Heckle is the one with the New York accent and Jeckle is the one with the British accent. Possible that Jeckle came from the UK before meeting Heckle in the USA.

This one didn't grab me. Others did. There's one on YT where a grampy guy and his dog try to get H & J to be quiet neighbors. I laughed out loud at some of the gags in that one. Maybe you'll like it, too. Bugs and Daffy are still my favorites, though, plus anything by Tex Avery or Chuck Jones. Of those, "Swing-Shift Cinderella" and "Red-Hot Riding Hood" are my favorites. Also, most of the ones with "Droopy" in the cast.
