Many flashy reviewers stay at a subjective and at the surface only but you take the time to carefully Listen, even to tweak the speaker and to recommend us very honestly with your own experience and in depth and details. Thank you for that in-depth & tear-down review of the Hecos! How wrong I was about the screws. That was improved, compared to the "Direkt Dreiklang" speakers I used to own few years ago. BTW Hopefully you, your family, friends, pets, home and lastly your precious HiFi gear will never ever be affected by a tornado impacting your area. Even though when you released that "new home" series of clips and I heard 'Oklahoma City' I instantly thought about elevated tornado risk right there in the pathway of "tornado alley", I mean elevated compared to your previous place of residence. - But I understand there might be more weighty benefits than pondering too much about tornado statistics and it's always a matter of pros and cons when moving. Thank you for your service to the HiFi community, it's appreciated!

Those of us who’ve actually listened to the Celans in HT applications would heavily disagree about how they perform in HT, especially when in an appropriately sized room for them and when they’re run as Small and crossed at 60 or 80 Hz. This is pure silliness to suggest they’ll fall apart in an HT setting. At -15dB (70 master volume) they are clean & composed. Low distortion. Secondly, few of us should be buying these (or any bookshelf for that matter) with the intention of playing music with peaks in the mid 90’s. With my Denon 6700 master volume at 70 I get an average level of 80.9 dB with peaks of 87.0 dB, and that’s LOUD. That’s like me trying to turn my HT into a club… and yet the Celans still performed beautifully at that level. Thirdly, HECO uses Klippel testing to make their speakers, and the exuberant charm of the Celan lies in how fun, vibrant, energetic, and slightly lively they are. As soon as you stuff them (like you did) you slightly deaden the sound (like you experienced) which effectively diminishes what makes the Celans so fun & fantastic to begin with... and so now it’s no longer a Celan. You just dumbed them down for the majority of us who aren’t going to be listening at ear-bleeding levels. If you want a speaker to damage your ears with, buy something else; if you listen at normal levels or don’t need to crank your bookshelfs to reach sufficient SPL, then get the Celans. I had a full 7.2.4 Dynaudio HT with Contour 20’s & 25c for LCR [which ARE braced & stuffed], along with Dyn Excites for sides & rears which later became Emit M20’s.. and switching to the Celans for LCR and Ambients for surrounds made my HT come to life. There’s even more detail extracted now and a slightly more forward airy engaging sound, without introducing any unwanted distortion. It’s extremely clean & crisp with MV at 70 [-15dB] on my Denon 6700. Intelligibility is superb.

Hi, great review, many thanks. I bought a couple of these HECOs (used). In my opinion, they lack the openness, airiness and space at the top, as many describe them. The treble lacks air and space at the top, even compared to the Elac DBR62. Maybe because the inner walls of my pair of the loudspeakers are covered with a layer of damping material, such as cotton wool. As far as I know, the walls of the speakers are not covered with anything inside from the factory.

Dear friend! Thank you for the high-quality review of my favorite speaker systems, which I also call night speakers. I want to give sensible advice on upgrading any cases. This is a big misconception when amateurs distribute cotton wool or other sound absorber evenly throughout the entire body. The best results are obtained by a relatively dense ball of the simplest cotton wool, wrapped in gauze. It is recommended to place it approximately in the center of the body. I read this advice on the forum of professional designer Alexander Klyachin. The bass from such an upgrade becomes dense, clear, punch is felt, but the amount of bass does not decrease. When we scatter cotton wool over the body, the bass reflex does not work well, the meaning of its existence is lost. With all respect, Andrew!

I watched all three vids mostly for information on the V8B. I've been a big Aperion fan for years having owned many different models. (Still own several, including a full 5.1 Verus Grand HT setup) I've wanted a pair of the V8B's for two channel in my office environment for some time now. Watching the review by Erin's Audio Corner caused a pause, as he really emphasized a few troubling measurements ending with a less than favorable review. Did you test the V8B's on tubes or solid state gear?
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 10 ай бұрын
Hello Kurt, Erin's report is interesting however his comments do not jive with my experience. Interesting, if those comments were directed at the MA Silver 7G, I would have completely agreed. Where I found the Intimus T to exhibit unpleasant peaks and inconsistency, I thought the V8B performed very well and consistent. I used all manner of amps, SS class D, hybrid and tube. Provided my room is smaller and treated, so maybe this mitigates some of his findings while listening. Erin's reporting on bass performance absolutely lines up with what I was reporting, super clean and full of detail. Funny how many folks want their speakers to perform like Revel and Perlisten on paper, yet I talk to all the folks who trade in their Revel's and Perlistens because they are tired of them, they crave something more musical. Its a well built speaker, way better than its foreign competitors at $1500 range. I do not like tilted or lit up speakers so maybe this is why the V8B appeal to me more. You never know if you never try.

@@2ChannelListening ...and try I did! I snagged a pair used believe it or not, for a steal. I'm close to Aperion in Oregon so fortunate to find them on the used market often. (And I know what to look for having years of experience with them) They're fabulous! After trying many amps I settled on my Vincent SV 237 as best, and what a pairing! I do like a little sparkle on the top end so ended up using tone controls to boost treble a tad, and the resulting sound stage is impressive! Speakers totally disappear with a refined center image. Love them! Only problem is that I also have a set of Solstice DIY speakers with upgraded SB Acoustics Beryllium tweeters & Mogami wiring, and they're better. I've gone back and forth many times, and the Solstice towers are just better. (Amazing...really) It's hard to decide between the two as the build quality and finish on the V8B's is so gorgeous....

@@roybrolsbeak I think for the price point, I couldn't find a better performing speaker with so much character and performance. The money you pay for the Rubicon is incredible quality control and non of the mess I opened up in my Revo 3 to fix with missing glue seams.

I have a short list of speakers I may consider going forward, waiting until I move and know what my environment and needs will be. Right now its an apartment. For an overall general purpose standmount speaker have looked at Dali Rubicon 2, the LSA signature 80 someone else mentioned in a response, and perhaps Musician Knight 1 at $2K, if only it had a nice wood veneer. There may be a few others as well in a small option. Would prefer a wood veneer but definitely avoiding gloss black. If I wanted to go bonkers, there's the Totem Fire but well see. Right now, for low level listening, my budget options are doing pretty well within their abilities.

@@legrandgroves8560 the Heco's and BMR's would be a terrific match up for sure. I owned the Heco when it use to be sold at Audio Advice. I liked it quite a bit. Had it connected to a Nuprime Ida 8 integrated amplifier. Great combo. THEN......I got ahold of a basically brand new pair of the Aperions. HOLY MOLY WOW!! Night and day difference. Smokes the Heco with every aspect. Maybe the Heco can compete in the Highs. But everything else has the Aperions tanking the Hecos. I did put some $$ into the Aperions as far as some no rez and a friend did up the crossover with very expensive sonic caps etc. That upgrade set me back $300 per speaker. He knows more than me about that aspect. Now it competes with my Canton References. Probably better. And those cost me $5k. But bone stock it blows the Hecos out of the water

There are a limited number of BMR's out there so it is not exactly a used bargain the way the Heco Celan 3 is. I'm seeing Totem Element Fire V1's in the mid to low $2K range, that's a better used buy. If you can get a BMR for under $1400, then yes, top of the list.

Alrighty so I just pushed these damn things HARD and pushed them well north of 95dB, I'm talking 105-110dB spikes, C weighted, subwoofers off, using a variation of songs like Put On by Jeezy, Set Me on Fire by Pendulum, Cherish by Madonna, Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson, and Name by Goo Goo Dolls, oh and Alquimia by Different Heaven. These things held their composure all the way up, not a single cabinet vibration, hell I couldn't even feel anything when I put my hands on the cabinet. Last I changed to A weighted and pushed them to 100dB and the results were the same. I don't know if your pair are different but the ones I have are built like a tank. My room is similar just slightly bigger at 12x14 with 9ft ceilings and all measurements were from the listening position using a physical dB meter and cowitnessed with a second cheaper dB meter. Anyway, if you bought that pair I'd suggest having them replaced under warranty or consider the possibility that something else could be amiss? A loose binding post, room interactions, etc... who knows. I remember one time being absolutely convinced a speaker was blown only to realize I had left the binding post loose lol but yeah, could also just be a bunk set, anyways, just sharing, have a blessed day!

It's heavy for it's size, so I figured most of that weight was in the cabinet. They're are selling at a ridiculously low price right now. Could this be the reason why? I have heard nothing but good words about this speaker. The only real negative that people reported was a very long break in period. To bad, I love the looks.

The weight is in the amazingly large magnets for both drivers. There is no bracing and nearly no damping material. I didn't find them to have a long break in period, they sounded pretty good right away save for the cabinet issues of my pair.

I appreciate your comments and compliment. Exactly what do you have in mind though, are you saying I shouldn't mention that I purchase most of my review gear? People get the wrong idea when I don't - not to mention folks really do not understand how much logistics actually go into all this. I specifically go for small brands and they are not always very cooperative. One chap wanted to give me only 14 days and I had to pay the shipping...yeah right.

I think you took the Celans from a correctly dampened cabinet to an over dampened one, sacrificing bass performance and probably some other characteristics as well. Personally I wouldn't touch a speaker in any way, as I would just be destroying the work of the speaker designers. Heco does use the Klippel laser system to measure it's products, which among others can measure even the smallest distortions generated by the cabinet.
@2ChannelListening

I have to go by what my ears hear and the Heco in stock form could not keep up with the other two speakers when pushed. I removed a lot of the wool and substituted with 1/2" damping pads over 50% of the surfaces, nice balance now. Tone with better breakup control. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@kenhiett5266 I have these speakers now, my usual listening levels are around 85 dB max and I wouldn’t go above that since it would be unbearable, there’s no distortion that I could discern with my ears, all I want to do is to keep listening to these speakers. I have pushed them above 90 dB on a few cases just to see how they would fare and again there was no distortion that I could discern, that took my attention from the music or made the sound unpleasant in any way. There’s also another reviewer that pushed the exact same speaker above 100 dB and didn’t hear anything either. I’m not disregarding 2ChannelListening’s opinion but in his case there could be a defective pair, bad amp/speaker combo and even the room since it plays a huge role on perceived quality and can introduce distortions on it’s own. These Celans are a fantastic pair of speakers and easily unbeatable in the 1000$ range imo.

Yikes - 3 metal core inductors? And 2 of them in the same orientation? The 3rd one is in the same orientation as one of the small air core inductors? The curved sides does stiffen the cabinet, all else being equal, but obviously the cabinet is a weak point. I would suggest the 3-layer foam that Parts Express sells - it won't effectively reduce the interior volume of the cabinet as much as the foil faced material, and it is quite effective at damping the panels.

Given the European price point, the crossover parts quality will be the first shortcut. The drivers are pretty darn good in my opinion.
@NeilBlanchard
@NeilBlanchard 10 ай бұрын
@@2ChannelListening They do look well designed and well made. The 5 coils in the crossover mean they are probably using 4th order on both drivers, and there is a notch filter (probably) on the woofer. That is a fairly complex thing to build. In my most recent speakers, the MLTL-6 Tower, I am using a series crossover that has 3rd order slopes - there are only 2 coils and 2 caps and 2 resistors (used in parallel for power dissipation). The coils total only 0.78mH. so I can afford 14AWG air core Solen units, and with 2 bypass caps on the ClarityCaps - the parts total about $160, I think? That's retail - but the quality is much higher than the Heco, too.

30hz - 50khz may be 'accurate' but at what Db? +/- 18db or 12db or 6db? Frequency response specs must always include the Db range for it to be meaningful. The usual standard followed by many reputable speaker companies is +/- 3db. Some do it +/- 6db. Those that do not quote that part of the spec are trying to mislead consumers who may not know better.
@2ChannelListening

I've noticed Canton and Heco do this with most of their speaker line. Post an exceptionally broad frequency response and yet no indication of at what +/- db range. Certainly will trick folks into thinking the bookshelf speakers handle full range. Marketing by omission.

yesterday I listened to bw805d4 with Marantz pm10 in the store. I will not write that Heco is better, it's more that the bw805 had bad acoustics. Or maybe I don't like the sharp sounding loudspeakers made by the earlier Klipsch. Heco at home sounded more musical for me.

No I wouldn't use that dampening material and why does everybody get the stuff with the foil it's not necessary; you can get it without foil. What is it about 8 mm thick you going to lose volume of the cabinet, a better solution would be to use a roof repair water-based rubber solution without fibres. just brush it on but it is permanent that's what I use very good..! you want the exact one I can give it to you. Another benefit would be to make a blu tack bead for the drivers, 6mm for the woofer and 3,mm for the tweeter this will be best for cutting out sound resonance especially from the woofer. I would take the wool from the sides you can leave it at the bottom and just put it on the back right level with the port you don't need it on the sides. And with that damping material it doesn't really work so well as a painted on water-based rubber solution, use water-based not solvent because that could affect the glue in the drivers!! And is not pleasant to work with. What concerns me there is no side bracing between the sidewalls and the front baffle as you can see it is being machined at a slope that must be very thin at that point?? really you need a corner bracing all the way top to bottom without touching top and bottom, otherwise it can cause buzzing.
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening Жыл бұрын
The foil exists because you have no way of applying it without 80% of it being stuck to you...I'm also guessing, but the foil help keep the venting down, nasty stuff. The Heco drivers are pretty inert, but it wouldn't hurt to put some resonance material on them as you say. Nice suggestions HG. There's an Open box out there for $900 - looks like a good experiment for another brave soul...
@hoobsgroove
@hoobsgroove Жыл бұрын
@@2ChannelListening I didn't say put the roof repair sealant on the drivers but I suppose you could cover the basket, you can do the driver this has to be diluted by a third and only on the edge of the driver cone no more than 10% from its surround, to dampen resonance from the driver. I meant paint the inside of the cabinet with it..!! as a dampening material. They are bitumen pads what you put on you can get them without the foil well used to anyway, the only reason they have the foil for cars is to keep heat in or blocking heat in the summer getting in, same principle as insulation for your house. Another thing I noticed is the port is too short to produce those frequencies talk about, what it could benefit from is a much longer port and two together 2" apart between them, will give better set up and against the wall as well. I would extend the port three times its length and be slightly bigger or better used two or one and a half?? where the half would be a ½ inch pipe half the length of the main tube, prevents chaffing and better airflow. Try it you can always cut a piece of wood and fill it up and painted over nobody we'll see it. but if you do that on the length of the port at the moment you've got?? you will need to extend its length to double the length of the main port. just get some plastic water pipe tubing make a big difference. But really you want to extend the main tube to get the benefit of the low frequencies in conjunction. You could experiment by sliding another tube over the existing one! Like a gutter down pipe, wrapping tape around the original port and sliding on a tube with a fairly to tight fit. have a piece of ¼-½ inch dowel going through the end of the pipe, ¼;an inch from its end should be fine, this helps with less chaffing problems as well, on the end of the tube pipe connect piece of string to the dowel through to the outside of the cabinet, extend as I say the tube at least.. three of its standard port tubing length, and slowly pulled tube backwards in 3 mm increments, you can mark this beforehand on the extended tube by engraving and paint over with white paint what you can see from the outside! and listen to the speaker. If you need to push the port further out you can use a piece of wood against the dowel, make sure you glue the dowel in with epoxy resin glue like gorilla glue, just do one speaker at a time don't listen to both together, and give yourself time 2 weeks on one speaker listening adjusting you might need to repeat this process. Of course placement will play a part so find the ideal placement for yourself this can be against the wall or further out when adjusting, and make sure you keep it at that spot for the ultimate tuning, of course it will still work in other areas say further out into the room but won't be at its optimal so much. If you want the speaker to be further from the wall then set it up at 3.4 ft wall behind and 3.8 from the sidewall. The port tuning an extension is all reversible so no issue! Just make sure the tape is even and probably the whole length of the original port in your case and is a fairly tight fit. Give it a go you got nothing to lose.
