Hi great video. David, London UK. I've always had AR speakers. Started with AR6 in 1973. Then the AR162 (top of the Spirit range) a fantastic speaker very forward and impressive. Great for classical and jazz. Then the AR91 and AR90 good all-rounders. Got a pair of AR12s made in UK at their factory here specially for one of the managers then with matching AR stands.. Mint cabinets but needed new grills. The original foam grills just perished. The tweeters fine. Mids are ferro-fluid which can dry up and be a problem. Both units are unique to this single model and are virtually impossible to replace. The mid can be rebuilt with a new surround but it is a very tricky job though I managed to do it! The original owner had changed the woofer to a non-AR woofer which is a BIG MINUS. I am looking for a pair of 10" AR woofers suitable for the AR12s. Presumably this was done when the surrounds crumbled. He should have restored them, but who did then? These produce a big sound with an exceptionally transparent midrange ideal for instrumental music or voice. I would say more suited to classical less suited to rock or pop. A good recording sings on these speakers - as with the AR162s. I must be one of thecfew people who own these AR12s in the UK. They had only one previous owner who was a manager at the AR factory. They came with all the original brochures, delivery notes, internal factory notes and memos invoices etc plus the matching stands. The midrange restoration kits and replacement grills (which are cloth not as nice or chic as the original crumbly black foam ones) I got from AR Vintage on Ebay in USA. There are mid and high switches on the back which work fine. I didn't do any work on the cross overs which is where an enthusiast would start. They sound OK to me. A failing capacitor usually dulls the sound or introduces hum in equipment and these speakers actually sparkle so no problem there! Mission objective - the legendary AR9s! But I'd need a new house with a concert room to put them in!😅 All best David, subscribed and carry on doing the great videos!

Thanks for sharing those sound samples! Sounded terrible to my ears/taste. Maybe it's the very reflective room acoustics or the speakers themselves. My interest in the Zu speakers is suddenly no longer there...

How are the Fyne 501's at low- to extremely low volumes? I hear a lot of great things about them but I rarely listen above 70dB and in my experience some speakers need a bigger kick in the backside to get them going.

WHERE CAN I FIND THOSE STANDS ? Please... Very nice discourse. Thank you. I used to sell ads back in the mid '80's and bought the 1590 II's at "salemans accommodation" (wish I got rosewood!) . Still have them, still love them. I never found them overly bright, unlike say Canton, for example. One of my speakers did begin to sound dull, so i sent all the domes and the crossovers out to be serviced (ferrofluid, caps...) You rightly state the importance of Amp and source. Im presently using Adcom 565 monoblocks for roughly 500w per side, sourced by Audio Research sp-9 mk3. Yeah, a real classic rig :) You can't beat the depth and control offered by high power, combined with softness and 3D offered by a few tubes in the chain. But especially the power...I'd strongly recommend a big Amp to anyone interested in these. Oh, 200s, 300s, 400s, 300s in-wall, 570s, M12s, too :)

I owned the Heco when it use to be sold at Audio Advice. I liked it quite a bit. Had it connected to a Nuprime Ida 8 integrated amplifier. Great combo. THEN......I got ahold of a basically brand new pair of the Aperions. HOLY MOLY WOW!! Night and day difference. Smokes the Heco with every aspect. Maybe the Heco can compete in the Highs. But everything else has the Aperions tanking the Hecos. I did put some $$ into the Aperions as far as some no rez and a friend did up the crossover with very expensive sonic caps etc. That upgrade set me back $300 per speaker. He knows more than me about that aspect. Now it competes with my Canton References. Probably better. And those cost me $5k. But bone stock it blows the Hecos out of the water

Find me a midrange driver that goes as low in frequency with as low a mass and as high a magnetic gauge as that huge ADS dome mid driver. That aspect alone gives the ADS mids a resolution akin to electrostatics.

I much rather take the Vandersteen Treo. It is expensive (compared with Vandersteen 1, 2 and 3) but still way more cheap than Avalon. Since 50-60% of a normal high end loudspeakers price has to do with the enclosure (and the veneer finish), which is the reason Vandersteens 1, 2 and 3 are so cheap since they don’t have any fancy box and veneer, and all Avalons have a very complicated box I must say that when you buy a pair of Avalons you pay for 70-80% the box and 20-30% the sound.

Steely Dan sold over 40 million albums because nothing made them exceptional? I was an FM hi-fi listening teen in the 1970's, and Steely Dan was everywhere. I got so sick of their hits that it took until just the last few years for me to want to listen to their albums as albums, and they are enjoyable from start to finish. But thanks for looking at Naim stuff. I've had Naim in my life since 1995 and am running a Name NAIT XS2 integrated amp right now.

Lack of punch on the Vienna? I have the smaller Bach speakers. NO lack of punch in my system I can tell you. It's about what you're driving them with and it can come down to cables, not just the equipment. I'd call the Viennas chameleons in their nature. They'll take on anything you feed them and colour themselves accordingly. These can certainly punch. Ask my neighbors and my sore guts.Is true what he says about vocals being 5 feet back. However, once again, they can be tuned and I've spent a $$ and time experimenting. You can get them where the vocalist is in the room that's for sure. You can get them where you're in the room with the musicians. Minor toe in helps and high quality copper cables everywhere will bring out that missing imaging. I use no filtering in my system and they like that too. They really change with every minor change i've tried so if you're a tweaker, you can tweak forever with these, if you really wanted to. 3 power amps mine have liked are Dynavector HX1.2 , Son of Ampzilla 2, OAD ( from Australia ). Did ok with Musical Fidelity but they needed to be turned up quite loud before the amp came to life. Viennas will image well at very low volumes if you've got good gear.

I recall an interview with Alan Shaw, where he discussed testing his speakers and he had the x-over laid out in front of him where he could change parts at will. In this interview, he mentions that the part he deems best isn't always the most expensive, rather sometimes it may be the cheapest (or cheap) part that is the best match. We can't always assume performance based on the price tag of some parts.

I listen to music in a room that measures 6x4 meters. I like to listen to vinyl from the 60's and 70's. The M30.2 xd model is the one I had chosen, but I think the shl5 xd is going to be the one that comes home instead of the M30. These will be the speakers of my life and I don't want to make a mistake in choosing. The amplification I have is a built-in hybrid at 100w. Which speaker do you recommend me buy?
