Philly local here. It's not the outright refusal to play here after claiming to be 'built to be a Flyer', it's the absolute entitled arrogance in not only ghosting the GM who traveled across the world to see you, but refusing to even speak to John LeClair who tried to visit him at Boston College. The icing on the cake is the refusal to identify the actual problems he had with the organization. The silence just makes it seem like whatever reason he had was bullshut.
@AnaheimRobКүн бұрын
Whatever caused the rift may have been so bad in the eyes of Gauthier, at that point he didn't care...even if it was LeClair. Flyers fans love their team but it is not the best run in the league by far. No one will know for sure until the truth comes out more than likely years from now, but good chance Cutter and his family were lied to. First, he was a Chucky Fletcher draft pick, just to clarify; Briere inherited this mess. The reasons there such a hubbub about this i think: One, in the age of social media where no one stops at Dunkin Donuts without posting pictures and their impressions/feelings about it; a young person actually shutting their mouth and keeping their cards close is a mystery. And as Picard said, a mystery is irresistible to us humans. Second, this is really the kind of thing you expect from NFL/NBA, dont you? Its highly irregular for hockey. Those things, plus a few things ive heard him utter, give me the impression that, in time, the Flyers will be grateful for the bag of maturity/character issues they dodged on this one.

Flyers are a proud franchise, as close to an Original Six franchise as you can get without actually being one. A kid who has yet to skate on NHL ice decides that the franchise needs to bend to his will. The franchise doesn’t budge, so he cuts off all communication with the team and forces their hand in a trade. Then he claims that there’s some super secret reason for why he needed to leave the franchise, but he won’t elaborate. He even bemoans the fact that the fans don’t know the whole story, and that he wished they knew all the context… yet he still doesn’t provide that context. Somehow, someway, the Flyers are being painted as the bad guys here by the broader sports media. Hopefully this doesn’t open the door to more NHL prospects pulling this crap, because for the longest time, this simply did. not. happen in hockey (outside of a few specific elite prospects with huge egos like Lindros).

It happened in Anaheim twice the past fifteen years. First with Justin Schultz. He wasn't a top five draft pick but prior to his first year int the NHL he was touted as one of the next high end, high scoring defensive prospects in all of hockey. He didn't reach that ceiling in the NHL but still had a very good career. He refused to sign with the Ducks after they drafted him. He didn't even give them a chance to get a good trade for since his side made things public. The Ducks got nothing for him...Zero. I don't recall any death threats towards him, certainly not dozens or hundreds. I honestly don't think there was one. There weren't "F" bomb chants either...boo's sure, but that's about it. Henry Thrun was another a couple years ago. He wasn't as highly touted as Schultz, but he was still up there for D prospects. He let the Ducks know ahead of time he wasn't going to sign and even though they didn't get full value they did get a third round pick from San Jose. At least for whatever reason Cutter's side still gave notice and time for Philly to get a fair return if maybe slightly lop-sided. Drysdale is going to be good, but Gauthier has more upside...it really depends on who Philly drafts with the second rounder they got from the Ducks to see if the trade ever evens out. Also, Philly fans are quick to vilify a 19 year old kid. Let's face it, The Flyers organization is not the best run in the NHL right now...Not even close. Philly fans really need to find out what's going on because Cutter may not be the villain many in Philly think he is. So far in Anaheim he has been a work horse even if he isn't scoring tons. Nothing in the local media saying he is a problem. Not one article from any Southern California media outlet. Nothing bad to be said from people who have had interactions with him outside the arena. Everyone says the same thing. Seems like a good kid. Personally, I think Philly let a good one get away. Fans in Anaheim still miss Drysdale, but the trade was a no brainer for the team.

I haven’t seen one thing that’s been remotely close to the reasons that I decided.” -The Sporting Tribune, Derek Lee

It reminds me of Eric Lindros. his refusal to play for the Quebec Nordiques, the team that drafted him first overall in 1991 created a firestorm of controversy at the time. He was hated a lot by Nordiques fans.
@ComradeDaveH3 сағат бұрын
But at least Lindros had the stones to tell the Nordiques he wasn't going to play for them before they went ahead and drafted him. Quitter went the exact opposite way and then refused to even talk to them or give a reason. He's ten ply anyway so I'm glad he showed himself the door.

Its kind of an ironic twist of fate that Phili drafts a high pick that doesn’t want to play for them after the whole Lindros saga. Obviously not the organization’s fault with Lindros or Cutter but just two strange situations…

Lindros openly said before the draft that he did not want to play for Quebec, and they drafted him anyway. Gauthier did a bait and switch and now refuses to explain why he demanded a trade. The two situations are pretty different

A product of the culture with these skilled kids nowadays. Handed everything. Never told no. Raised with a silver spoon. Shielded from any discomforts in life. Told by everyone around them how special they are their entire childhood. If you’re 17,18 y/o and a billion dollar NHL franchise, ran by accomplished men, invests and believes in you, you should be humble and grateful. You should do what you’re told and work hard to impress the organization and your teammates. So sick of these snot nosed brats. And I’m not even a Flyers fan.

As a Flyers fan who grew up on 2 street, if there’s one thing people in Philly hate it’s a lack of loyalty. Once you out on that jersey at the draft to stop all communication is a selfish move. I agree with everyone who says we dodged a bullet not having him in the locker room. If he was less selfish he might be a center for Mitchkov and they could be helping each other. Instead he’s the most hated guy in Philly since Kasparaitis and Stevens.

Kind of ironic how Philadelphia got Eric Lindros, who refused to play for the Quebec Nordiques after he was drafted there for a year and was traded. And now, the Flyers know how the Nordique fans felt about Lindros with this situation. Don't get me wrong, I would be pissed off as well if my team drafted a player who seemed happy to be eager to join us and then flat out refuse to play.

I'm not a flyers fan by any means, but from a competitive standpoint, it sparked a new rivalry which will be fun to watch. People defending him cause he's "young" are hilarious to me. You get drafted by an organization that clearly wanted you, and for some reason you think you have a choice in where you get to start in the NHL. Flyers gave him a deal, he said he wasn't gonna play for the Flyers and cut them off, so the Flyers trade him. Situation itself isn't abnormal at all, even though you should never have an ego when you've yet to ever step on the ice at the NHL level, but the way he handled it is the real problem, and I can understand why Philly fans would be upset at it.
@brianb799123 сағат бұрын
I seem to remember similar behavior by Eric Lindros. Philthydelphia was all too happy to embrace that whiner who wound up having a skull as rugged as a newborn...

Nice recap, but you don’t answer the most important question…. And it’s WHY Gauthier didn’t want to play for the Flyers. What is the reason or at least speculation??
@jjjfo1818Күн бұрын
He said it was “rookie GM and Coaching style” even after going on Spittin Chiclets and saying he was excited to play for torts after meeting him…so that’s obviously a lie. He’s said he’ll eventually say why.
@jordanholmes994321 сағат бұрын
In an interview with Ducks media, he talked a lot about his decision to play in Boston was about the life outside of Hockey. Where he lives in all the hours outside of being in the rink is important to him. And no offense to Philadelphia, but If you had the choice to live in Southern California or Philadelphia and you were making at least 800k a year, I dont think thats a very hard choice.

This kid deserved it. Once upon a time some schmuck named JD Drew did pretty much this same thing to the Phillies. I belive that left a pretty crappy taste in our collective mouths. Enough so that when Cutter decided to ghost management and team legends it reignited that hatred. This kid turned himself into the new JD Drew. This will follow him for his entire career. Should have just grown a set and played out his rookie deal. Instead he was scared to fail here, so he tucked tail and ran.

It’s quite an intriguing situation. I just don’t buy the fact he woke up one day and said “Nah I don’t want to play for Philly anymore” There has to be more going on here and we have really only ever heard Briere and the Philly management side of this. Something happened AFTER he was drafted, might been one thing might been a factor of smaller things but at some point, he said “I can’t play here” and stuck with it. I don’t blame fans for booing him during the game and being that energetic, I know I would be like that if the same thing happened to me. Just wish we knew why he left but we’ll likely not know until way down the line perhaps when he’s retired.

It really boils down to when he was an undrafted prospect and said he wanted to play in Philly. It's that simple. And any other argument in favor of against the quitter is 'smoke'. If he had said he was unsure or did not want to play there and if Philly drafted him under those circumstances....it's on the organization. But no. He lied or acted unprofessional to get a trade. Or did both. That's on him. He impacted the positive progression of a struggling franchise, because he wasn't honest. There have been wildly off comparisons to players like Lindros. But Lindros informed the Quebec Nordiques to not draft him BEFORE they chose to. Completely different. Anaheim fans point to his age. Bullshit. Had the situation been exactly in reverse they would react the same way. I do hope the NHL can put it's foot down and change the control a college player can have at the beginning of their career. Time will tell on that. I'm petty enough that I would not have traded for Drysdale and a pick. I'd make him burn two years of eligibility and sit...unpaid and unplayed for a couple years of his life. Postponing hus earnings and hurting his skill set. If teams don't do this they run the risk of dealing with entitled players. Petty I know. Don't care. He really messed with the Flyers timeline and would have been something special playing with Michkov. He's a good player but I hope he underachieves. Unfortunately I don't think he will. He has reaped what he has sowed....and deserves the hostility
