The Llangattock Hedge laying Championships in South Wales. Learning about Monmouthshire Style Hedge Laying. Competitors, committee, volunteers and spectators made it a wonderful afternoon of hedge laying. Watch the flexible stems being laced along the top of a hedge to hold the pleachers in place. Also known as edders, ethering, heathers, heathering or winders.

Thank you John. What I try to do is capture events that happen today, not just the activity but as many of those who are there. To try and give a flavour of what is going on. Do you actually lay hedges in South Africa?

@@JamesRattray no not really they normally just stick posts up with wire that's why there's a high amount of stock theft here but it's nice to a part of Wales again I forgot about this sort of thing and to hear the lilt miss the Heather and the gorse on the hills

@@JamesRattray Here in America, there are some areas that won't allow this sort of thing even if you own some acreage. HOAs and townships both try to regulate anything that circumvents spending money on landscapers. The only hedge you can have in some suburban areas are rows of boxwood, or cedar or things like that, but I don't think mixing multiple types would be accepted. My area isn't like that, though. The nice thing is you can move somewhere that nobody cares. I am going to try this just with the trees in my area. The only challenge that I have are deer and other such animals, but I think that I can outplant their eating.

I’ve been to a few matches but only to watch, my hedgelaying isn’t up to match standard. I lay Monmouthshire and Cumbrian. You work with what you have and with what you can muster. Prefer working without a chainsaw but they do speed things up and unless you’re really good with an axe, a chainsaw is a must for the bigger stems. Good to see the pair of farmers, (dressed in black & red) still going at the Llangattock Vibon Avel match. Spacing wise, the saying goes, to have enough room to let the rabbit/hare through but not the dog. The long lengths of whippy that some, perhaps most brought with them, are hetherings or binders for the top. Stops the pleached stems popping off the post tops. Some styles don’t use them and if you’re laying long whippy growth, you can sometimes make the hetherings from the growth you cut away.
