The part where he discovers the tree always brings tears to my eyes. Looking up at the tree it's like the hedgehog and the viewer realize how small they are in the world. Terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

All Soviet cartoons, even the "happy" and "joyful" ones, have a nostalgic, sad feel about them. It's hard to describe but they always make you feel sadness and joy at the same time.

Most Russians living in Soviet-era either had Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or their parents had it due to WWII when 27 million Russians were massacred by Nazi Germany. This most be the source of that sadness to the core Russians had.

How I found the creator of this named Yuri Norstein, I was olaying Resident Evil Village video game and searched a name in the game ‘Norahteyn’ and Yuri Norstein was the first result in his Wikipedia page. I’m so happy I did. His animations are so dark, mysterious, and creepy but also childlike. So beautiful.

At 3:07 the scene when the hedgehog looks up and then gently lays the leaf back down, and backs up. Probably my most favorite scene in all of Norstein’s animations.

FOG-BOUND HEDGEHOG The little hedgehog lived in the hedges out of sight. He was little in the sense of young. He was fog-bound in his mind. Every night, he and his friend, Little Bear, met and counted stars. One evening, Little Hedgehog envisioned apparitions of a dark predatory owl, a bright white horse (Light), a friendly dog, a helpful talking water animal and other creatures on his way to meet Little Bear. The Little Hedgehog found a magic illuminating staff or wand in the forest, and it guided him in the dark night to the campfire to be back together with Little Bear. Little Bear is Ursa Minor, and Great Bear is Ursa Major. Both star constellations represent Russia and the Russian people. In terms of Jungian Deep Analytical Psychology, the Little Hedgehog became integrated with his Dark Side and became a Whole Self.

why did he go into the fog though
@jivanvasant
@jivanvasant 7 ай бұрын
@@cherifa0mebellil88 The Little Hedgehog represents part of everyone's mind. The fog represents the unconscious, dark part of the mind full of metaphorical "demons". Each person creates the fog because of oppressive social norms and taboos as well as childhood trauma caused by neglect and abuse in varying degrees. Little Hedgehog reunited with Little Bear, indicating that the person consciously faced, owned, accepted and became one with his hidden, inner, unconscious, dark side and become one, whole person. The guiding light of the metaphorical wand or staff is anyone or anything that helps the person to become a little more aware of his unconscious mind step by step until full awareness is reached.

@@jivanvasant so the hedgehog went into the fog that means he was brave enough to face his dark thoughts and places in his mind and the animals he met in there were the ones who helped him.... but what about the horse, seeing the horse in the first place was the reason the hedgehog went into the fog, it looked like he went in out of curiosity to see what the horse looked like, if it wasn't for the horse the hedgehog wouldn't have walked into the fog then, then at the end he looked shocked after he was reunited with his friend kind of like... traumatized...cause he has never been in there before and never seen such creatures... so I think it's the opposite of what you just said... idk that's what I believe after thinking abt it

@@cherifa0mebellil88 Your interpretation is just as valid as that of mine or anyone else. We each see what our experience enables us to see and what we are ready to see. No interpretation is incorrect, just as all dreams must be interpreted in terms of each individual's experience and situation. As Sigmund Freud, an avid cigar smoker, once said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". The horse may be interpreted as something like a guiding light that inspired the Hedgehog to be brave and look deeper within his mind. His look of shock may be interpreted as a look of anxious surprise at the discovery of some of his hidden "demons" or repressed traumas that had harmed and injured him in his childhood. He is not fully aware yet, but now he has enough awareness to continue his courageous, difficult, tedious search that can take a lifetime if he is willing to invest the time, energy and resources. Talking to others about our remembered childhood neglect and abuses is cathartic, therapeutic and increases awareness. That is why some people go to a Jungian psychotherapist who understands the intrapersonal dyamics. Peace.

The creator Yuri Norstein (still alive by the way, 82) seems a cool man even smiling. But try to propose a real funny animation in USSR under Leonid Ilitch Brejnev, at the middle of the cold war in 1972. No idea about the general mind there but probably very serious and quite sad ?

What does the owl represent?
@giantbonsai8950
@giantbonsai8950 Жыл бұрын
Hello internet stranger. I'm no expert but my take would be that the hedgehog is a curious innocent. The owl represents those who prey on others. But the hedgehog is saved by that very curiosity. He gazes at the stars and the owl, notices them for perhaps the first time and discovers wonder. The horse is perhaps beauty and the moral (if that's the right word) of the animation is that those who seek beauty (artists, animators) should be cherished and protected by those with more power and experience (dog and fish?) because it would be a shame if that innocence was lost.
