Ha they are always a joy! We have one that always visits us. I caught it in a live rat trap one year while trying to sort the rodent issue out. Let him go with a little food and its always about now. Friendly little thing you can be sitting in garden when the sun is going down and it comes out and walks right past you without a care in the world lol.

@@GregsWildlife dono if this helps but checkout ferret food! Ferret food is basically 100% meat protein. I keep ferrets so always have it at hand :D. Cheaper than fancy cat food probably way higher meat content also.

Brilliant Greg, with lots of useful info. Delighted to see that you have more than one hedgehog. As far as food placement is concerned, I scatter feed rather than putting it in a bowl. My theory being that it then tends to be less of a draw for the local cats (but not the fox), and is more in keeping with the foraging nature of hedgehogs. Unfortunately our hedgehog has gone AWOL since we got back from holiday on 9th June. We had seen it on my garden camera a couple of times in the week leading up to the 9th, on the first occasion on the 6th it was clearly having a problem with one of its back legs, but when seen again on 8th it seemed to be moving a bit better. Can't wait to see your next hedgehog video. Good work Greg. 👍👍👍

I can sympathise. When one of the hedgehogs was late showing up the other day, I was very worried. You see so many as roadkill, it can be quite tense.

Brilliant video. Not heard of those cat deterrents before, a very good idea. Hopefully Hedgehogs will use the house over the winter months. That would make for a great story for a video.

It would. Although I'm a little concerned, Hedgehog Cabin (the hedgehog hospital I mentioned in the video) thinks that the hedgehog house I use isn't that good. They say it's too small, or has too thin walls and might not be warm enough for a hedgehog to hibernate in. It could be another case of companies selling conservation products that just aren't suitable for the intended purpose. It's something I'll need to look into and maybe make some adjustments. It's incredibly frustrating.

every time i've been on a hedgehog forum people have recommended kitten food instead of "hedgehog" food, it's sad people would put animals in danger for what i doubt is even a lot of profit i must say using a cat's sensitive hearing to annoy them so much that they leave, is very funny

Started out with trail cameras years ago for watching hedgehogs in my garden, now I'm upto 10 ring stick up cameras, the motion alerts via the ring app are great for knowing when their active in the garden. I'm absolutely devastated though that after 7 years & lots of hedgehogs in the garden I had a badger attack & kill a hedgehog, I don't live anywhere near a woodland so no idea where it came from. Not seen the badger since that night & I'm praying hedgehogs eventually return,I'm still getting infrequent visitors but the hedgehog activity has fallen off a cliff. I don't like cats in the garden either ruining my wildlife garden, I get rid of them using humane ways, water pistol works well, I find those sonic devices do sod all. Regarding that hog house, I hope your still not using that particular one, to be blunt they're crap & not weatherproof. I started off with two of those, the bedding inside ended up all mouldy, the living space inside is very small as well, certainly no room in there for mum & hoglets. I now have 5 Riverside woodcraft houses, extremity well built & lots of room inside, even had hoglets born in them two years running. I also wouldn't place food so close to a hog house, you don't want to be attracting predators to their house so best to place feeding stations as far from hog houses as you can. My visitors preferred purina one kitten food as well, they have expensive tastes! Can highly recommend joining the Hedgehogs! group on Facebook, been on the group for years, now an admin & I've learnt so much for being a part of that group, there's also lots of rescues that post on there as well.

Very helpful never thought of this before, just checked my whiskas biscuits. It says cereal and then meat, is this good enough?? 😦

Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend Whiskas. I looked at them too when I was choosing some food, but the first ingredient has to be a meat of some kind. Cereals are completely useless for hedgehogs as they will feel full after eating it, but they don't digest it and won't get any nutritional benefit.

It hasn't been a big problem. I did spot a rat hanging around for a couple of days, but then it moved on.

Thanks Greg, it is disappointing as my neighbours would be more than upset if I started attracting rodents around the place, the hedgehogs will have to do with the large slug population, yesterday I put holes in my timber garden fence to let in the wildlife and I will make them some houses also which is a very good start, I amn't using chemicals anymore and I will let a section of grass grow wild.@@GregsWildlife

I think the best way to deal with rodents is if you do see them, remove the food for a few days. When their food disappears, so do they. Then you just put the food back. If you time it right, so put the food out just before dusk, chances are the hedgehogs will get to it first and eat it all, so there'll be nothing left for the rats and they won't move in. But great to hear about the other changes you're making to the garden, it all helps!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of cats. I mean, they're lovely as pets, but I don't like to see them roam around. They have a very bad impact on nature.
