Hedging Their Bets: Taiwan Industry Adapts to Geostrategic Risks

This online event, set for Wednesday, September 11, 8:30-9:30 am US ET, centers around the release of a new report by CSIS’s Scott Kennedy and Andrea Palazzi about how companies in Taiwan are responding to evolving geostrategic risks. Their research, based on the program’s second formal survey of Taiwanese companies, finds that firms are still quite worried about the international environment and conditions in China, and as a result are adopting a variety of coping strategies, including shifting some of their operations out of Mainland China and Taiwan. That said, the results indicate companies are diversifying rather than decoupling from China. During the event, the co-authors will present the findings of their survey and discuss the policy implications. There will then be a panel discussion with three leading experts: Kristy Hsu (Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research), Lev Nachman (National Taiwan University), and Dan Silver (American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan).

For the outlook on policy in the US you have companies like Apple and VW that want to slow the trend for Washington to gain the security environment and Washington has the job to protect the nation. Two opposing views. They should be looked at as two fields of analysis. Washington does not have as strong a hand in this battle as it should. As example, Washington wants to do "A" but instead does "B" because of pressure from industry.
