Official Philosophy Portal course on Hegel's Science of Logic: philosophyportal.online/scien...
This video is the fourth of five Science of Logic pre-course sessions, in preparation for Philosophy Portal's Science of Logic course. In this session, I present and discuss, Hegel’s logical response (primarily to “Kant’s Critique” and “Fichte’s Freedom”). This presentation/discussion will give a necessary background and foundation for entrance into Hegel’s actual logic. Some of the major themes we will cover include:
1. The role of conceptual work in positivising negativity
2. Subject matter of Logic as discourse itself (no exit/escape from language)
3. Relations between intelligibility and unintelligibility in founding discourse
4. Core distinctions which govern the unfolding of Hegel’s logic
5. Relation between Being and Becoming in narrative processes

Excellent, and I think it’s great to frame Hegel as interested in the space “between” discourses out of which discourses arise and back into which they move. The emphasis on the notion that we don’t realize an Idea until it is Real and concrete is paramount, and I may or may not have tried to open an ice-cream shop before…(cough, cough). It’s also a great point to emphasis that Hegel doesn’t negate being but rather sublates it, and I also liked the reflections on being, essence, existence, and the concept, which indeed suggests Plato must be taken very seriously. I also really liked the reflections on how Darwin and Christianity have been pushed to extreme limits, breaking them down, and yet since the minimal, critical core still thrives, both have managed to sublate into new discourses, which suggests the process of destruction and “working through negativity” which Hegel is so interested in. Really great presentation and talk everyone, as always!

20:05 i think you should flip abstract / concrete to concrete / abstract on the Key Distinctions slide, so that the order of the relation will be analogous in all three pairs.

Also wanted to add, I’ve been critical of reductionist materialism for a while…but you are one of the first that really explain the importance of the concept of material and its relation to becoming. Anyway thank you!

Thanks for these videos man, you are by far the most comprehensive and thorough instructor on Hegels ideas and their impacts and its unfortunate lack of incorporation at large in society. I came into philosophy from Jordan Peterson, Jonathan pageau and John Vervaeke. I found it interesting you had come into contact with pageaus and Vervaekes ideas especially. Going to try and really understand the immediate content you provided and sublate them as you say 😂

The dielectic is an evolutionary process -- not constrained to absolutes of materialism nor fixed categories nor freedom. Only its application to seeking order from phenomenology via experience (logic, ideation, experiment) can pretend to understand Absolutes -- not the speculation of historicity and philosophy, but which produced the essential dialectic process itself.
