Why are you pulling the carbine off your shoulder to run the lever?
@erichall72536 ай бұрын
Bingo. I own 10 lever guns of various calibers and brands, along with the “tactical” other side of my collection. It seems our presenter has little experience with lever guns? At worst, some of the Rossis with extremely stiff, crude actions and slick metal butt plates may need to be pulled off the shoulder. Otherwise, you are correct. I wonder what his business relationship is with Henry. I own two Henrys and had to send them both back for quality control issues, one five times until they provided a full warranty replacement. I enjoy these rifles/carbines now, and Henry customer service is very responsive and supportive. One is a Big Boy, 357 All-Weather, the other a Big Boy Steel 44 magnum, the one I had all the quality control issues with. Even the brand new warranty replacement they sent me, locked up so bad right out of the box that I couldn’t even clear it. They sent me another, and that one runs sweet. Just the voice of my experience for what it is worth.

Lever guns are fun. In rifle form, .357 magnum offers reasonable power and relatively gentle recoil. It's fine for deer at iron-sight distances. It also pairs well with a revolver. Sure, fun or novelty might be a factor for some of us but in more restrictive states, lever guns might be the best option.

As a man matures he grows to have respect for revolvers and lever guns. Yes, revolvers and lever guns can be used for self defense. But that doesn't mean a new aficionado will retire the AR, AK or auto pistol. It just means fun is expanded at the range and while hunting. It makes a great truck gun, as it's not "pretty" like Henry's other offerings.
@alanrawson-wg8io6 ай бұрын
You really need to run the gun from your shoulder. Press it to the shoulder with your support hand and cycle the action. With handgun calibers you should be able to keep your cheek weld, with 3030 or 4570 you may need to raise your head but the stock stays on the shoulder. Just like a pump shotgun you chamber a fresh round immediately upon firing. Like a shotgun you top up at any opportunity. Just practice. My grandfather taught me this when I was 12 so I’m pretty sure you can do it too. People are so used to semi automatic guns that they pay no attention to using older weapons.

@martingibson1225Ай бұрын
"What's the point?" There are several actually. 1. In states where semi-auto rifles are being banned, or trying to be, the lever gun is a good option because it is fast than a bolt action when you STOP taking it off of your shoulder to chamber another round. 2. There are a wide variety of cartridges available for lever guns from .22 to 45-70 and maybe others I am unaware of. 3. Hunting Rifle??? It won't replace a long range shooting rifle cartridge in open country like a .270, 7mm mag, etc. However, In NH where deer shots are typically less than 100 yards....many a deer have been taken with a 30-30 from a lever gun. 4. self defense: not a semi-auto, but a pistol cartridge ,357, .44 mag out of a carbine length barrel is a good home defense round that will stop effectively, more than a 9mm out of a pistol. Not as fast for repeat shots, but if you STOP taking the rifle off of your shoulder the second round comes pretty quickly.

Lever actions are still relevant because they are the fastest cycling manual loading rifle you can get. They can cycle ammo faster than a bolt action. Furthermore, they can do something semi autos cannot; Cycle ammo regardless of pressure. Revolvers and lever actions chambered in 357 magnum are among some of the most versatile firearms out there. Because they can cycle ammo regardless of power and pressure, they has a epic range of power they can put out from super-low-pressure 38 special to glowing red hot Underwood 357 cartridges that could fell most things that walk on legs in north America. One of these Henry rifles chambered in 357 would be a amazingly versatile firearm. Also, this Henry 'Big Boy' has my favorite kind of sights. Flat notch sights with fiber optic parts in the irons. which would make the gun viable for night time shooting if you attach a flash light on it via the Mlok system. and the threading that allows flash hiders and suppressors? Dude, this is one of the coolest and most versatile Lever actions out there. also a matter of personal preference. i prefer polymer furniture to wood for reasons of weathering and looks. The list of merits with this gun are in fact quite lengthy. I would not think twice about buying one. in fact, i want one quite badly.

I'm debating on purchasing a Henry X model chambered in 360 buckhammer for hunting deer in Maryland. The ballistics on the 360 straight wall cartridge are suppose to be similar to the 30-30. The fiber optic iron sights and plastic furniture on the X model definitely have a more practical appeal for today's hunter. Thanks for the video.
@andrewhirsch64724 ай бұрын
That might be an excellent choice for hunting on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state where I live. The weather during hunting season tends to be very soggy, warping the wooden stocks of long guns generally. And in the thick forest cover here, most shots are within 100 yards anyway.

Kind of a beginner question here, if anyone's still watching this old video - when I get my first lever action (45-70), I'd like to break it in & get used to the cocking/side-loading/cycling - but I won't get to go to the range very often, so if I buy enough 45-70 snap-caps to load it fully, should they cycle ok? I know the ejection is meant only for a shell casing not an intact cartridge, so would that be enough to jam up during eject? If I pull the trigger on every snap cap, won't they wear out? It's more of the muscle memory of loading/re-loading/cycling ejects I'm hoping to get used to.

14" LOP with no way to adjust it in 2024 is a fail. That's especially true for smaller shooters. It's one reason why you see people pull the gun off their shoulder to work the action. In many videos of people shooting these guns, you can clearly see that the gun does not fit the shooter properly. Shooting a rifle that does not fit is like running a marathon in shoes that are 2 sizes too big. Some people have never shot a properly fitted gun, and don't even know. Ruger put a very simple set of stacked spacers on their PC 9. That's a cheap and easy way to make plastic stocks usable. For the price of modern guns, I want the ability to fit the rifle, or I'm not buying it.
