Where did you get the power supply to the hei distributor from? I couldn't tell in the video 😢

The power wire comes from the ignition switch when it is in the “on” position. In the old points set up that wire went from the ignition to a ballast resistor then the coil. The resistor and coil are deleted with the HEI set up and that wire goes directly to the distributor. There is a link for a pigtail in the video description for the HEI I used that I installed later. In the video I took that power wire from the ignition and ran to the “+” terminal on the HEI. Good luck with your build!

Hey! So, I have a '74 K20. I got it running, but it didn't have much power when I stepped on the gas. I thought I needed to adjust the timing and tweak the carburetor. I started with the HEI distributor, set it to top dead center, dropped the distributor in, and put the spark plug wires in the right order. But it's still not running right, even though I know there's spark and it's getting gas. It cranks but won't fire, and now the carb is spitting gas out the top.

Oh no. I would do standard tune up stuff like plugs and wires. I’ve had my truck run terrible and spent forever troubleshooting thinking my wires and plugs were good because I changed them a few months earlier. Once I put the new stuff on it ran great. Then get a rebuild kit for the carb before you spend a ton of money on a new carb. It should fire with spark and gas. That’s a cool truck. Good luck. sorry I’m not more help and thanks for watching!

What firing order are you using - you said 1,8, etc. 351W has ALWAYS been 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8 was watching as I just switched to HEI on my 302 with Lunati cam which switched it to HO/351w order and threw me for a loop when you said that firing order.

Good catch. 18456273 is going clockwise looking at the distributor. Since the Rotor button is going counterclockwise, I should have said your way. Gonna work either way. I didn’t know 302s had the same firing order as the 351w. I guess the 302ho does according to google. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!

Have to ask, which headers did you use on that F100 chassis? I'm doing a swap to the 351w in my 78

They’re Hooker headers. Not sure the model cause it’s been 15 years. I think 6904. I did have to bash the drivers side a little for the frame. Good luck with your swap. The cheap HEI is still working good so I do recommend that unless you’re racing

Why 15 degrees?

My truck runs best at 15 before TDC. Any less or more it starts breaking up at higher rpms with the spark advance from my old points distributer and the new HEI. I think it’s because of the choppy cam. I recommend experimenting with different offsets to see what’s best for your application. Thanks for watching!

why is your rotor not pointed directly at the number one cylinder im curious

Fighting with the points-type distributor over the years that’s just where the thing would drop down at. I just rotated the plug wires on the cap till the #1 wire sat where the button ended up. I realize it looks 180 degrees off tdc, but it’s not. My HEI is still doing good and seems to start quicker in the cold weather. Thanks for watching!

Yes that’s right. The coil is deleted using the HEI. Use the hot wire that was going to the coil and run to the distributor. Also, no need to use a balast resistor on the hot wire. Good luck

I have not measured how many mpgs I’m getting but I assume it’s better because it runs smoother at all rpms now. It feels like it has more power whether it does or not I’m not sure.
