The 351 Windsor, or 351w for short, is one of the greatest engines Ford Motor Company ever produced. I’ve done a lot of research on the 351 SBF in preparation for doing an engine swap into the Bullnose, and this video is the culmination of everything I’ve learned. I’ve included year and vehicle charts so you can see which vehicles of which years carried the 351 Windsor block and which block years had which features.

Did you know that blocks made before 1974 had more material in the casting, so they’re actually stronger? The deck height isn’t the same for all years of 351 Windsor either. Some later blocks also allow for the use of roller cams instead of flat tappet. Do you know the difference between a 351 Windsor, a 351 Cleveland, a 351 Modified, or a 351 HO? In the battle of 351 Windsor Vs 351 Cleveland, why should you pick the Windsor even though the Cleveland is a more powerful engine?

Wanted to make a note that I misspoke when I talked about the casting number for the C90E block at 07:05. The C90E block is built in the 60's (69) and not the 70's, so C9 castings are 69 castings not 79 castings. D Blocks are 70's, E blocks are 80's, and F blocks are 90's.

Add 1997 F250-HD OBS had 351w 5.8L for service/utility companies. I have one myself, so for had 2 body styles in 1997 and Ford applied fixes for many known issues (TSB's).

Don't think 351W ever had over 10:1 compression ratio... if even quite that high... lowest about 7.6:1 actually... Prolly over 300 grossHP in later Mustang Cobras... There were 4 351's... the Ford '352' was also a 351" with same bore and stroke as others...

@@BuzzLOLOL 352 is same bore and stroke 4x3.5 but is big block FE family 332 to 428 only. Hard to find parts for now.

Nice breakdown of the Ford small blocks! In 1973, after saving every penny earned for like 5 years, and with some help from the old man I purchased my first car. A slightly used 1970 Mach 1 Mustang. It came with the 351 W 2bbl and an FMX automatic. I modded it with 3.91 rear gears, headers, dual exhaust, an Offy aluminum dual plane intake with a 600 CFM 4 bbl plus a recurved distributor. It ran a best of about 14.6 in the 1/4 mile (slow). I gave up on modding it when I roll raced a buddy in his 1972 Mach 1 (heavier) with a bone stock 351 Cleveland automatic. Our race was dead nuts even which was extremely discouraging! The problem was that back then, the 351W was seen as the poor, ugly stepsister to the Cleveland and as such got no love. Aftermarket support for the Windsor was almost none existent. No aftermarket heads, very few cams, etc. Everyone thought the Windsor block was weak due to it’s 2 bolt mains. (I also couldn’t even get a shift kit for the FMX). That all changed when Ford discontinued domestic production of the Cleveland and went forward in production with the Windsor engine family. Only the (lucky) Aussies continued to get the Cleveland as far as I know. When the Fox Mustangs hit the US in the late 1970’s through the 80’s the car became the favorite car to mod for young hot rodders. And guess what they discovered? They could bolt 351W heads onto their 302’s and eventually many just transplanted 351W’s that were plentiful at junk yards. And voila! Suddenly demand for 351W speed parts was born and the rest, as they is history!

Adding 351W heads to a 289 or 302 became a common modification as soon as the 351W came out. The 351W head, though, had an extra bolt hole that was unused on a 289 block. There were also stepped head bolts available for this modification.

It was actually the 5.0 engines that helped give the 351W a big push. The 5.0 is actually the most modified engine today. Heads, cams and many other performance parts also fit the 351W. Even the firing order is now the same. And then people started stroking engines to get big block cubic inches.

These are great engines. I have one in my 95 E350 work van. 300k on the original 351w. Still runs very strong without any issues!

Wrecking yards have bike full of things that can be swapped for other things. Like a 351M or 400M for a 351W. The Windsor is a better design that the Modified or Cleveland, except the heads. You can take the heads off of a Modified engine and install them on a Windsor. To do that you’ll have to relocate the cool and transfer and plug they old holes. They also take different intake manifolds. For the 351w or 352/400M heads there are special adapters that will allow the use of 302 bolts. If you don’t. Use those along with the conversion intake manifold and water port change and you’re set. But the 351/400m Heads have large open fcombustion chambers and require a special piston design to work with them. Any head will bolt one of course, but the smaller combustion is better for several reasons, the biggest of them are that the open chambered heads lowers the compression and it is more prone to dieseling because of that. Putting Cleveland heads on a Windsor is called making a Clever engine, and the special parts can be ordered for that. Good luck and have fun blowing all those bow ties away!

Also, it was once a common swap to install a 400 crankshaft into a 351W, creating a 400 cid Windsor. The snout of the crankshaft had to be machined slightly, though. This modification gained the larger displacement, while shedding the weight and external dimensions of the 400M.

I've been blessed enough to receive a 67' 289 mustang with a 351 already swapped into it. With the aftermarket exhaust it sounds pretty unique. Stoked to start wrenching on it.

The firing order for the 351 is also used in the late model 302/5.0 HO for the foxbody

Great video. I have a D0OE 351W with C9OE heads swapped in my 65 Mustang. The 400/351M and 351C are small block v8s. They share the same bore spacing and head bolt pattern as the 289/302/351W. The 400/351M are tall deck 351Cs the same as a 351W is a tall deck 302. The confusion lies in that most but not all 400/351Ms had the 385 bellhousing pattern. This was due to Ford ending production of the 390/360 FE motors for truck use and replacing them with the 400/351M.

and there are some clevelands that have both windsor and big block bolt patterns on the back of the motor at the same time

@@merc-ni7hy yes, some of the 73 400 blocks had the SBF bolt pattern and were equipped with the FMX transmission.

351M 400 motors have a large bell housing bolt pattern and the deck heights are an inch taller than a 351 Cleveland whereas the Cleveland will bolt up to any small black bell housing and has always been considered a small block in the performance realm.

Small Block / Big Block is Chevy stuff. Ford has their OWN engine families and even Ford themselves doesn't consider them "small or big" . The only true "Windsor" is the 351. There is no such thing as a "302 Windsor" or a "289 Windsor" even though they share many parts and a share a basic design.

Two things to mention. The 351M has a bigblock bell housing pattern, but the Cleveland not necessarily (though there were FMX) The number you show on the block is an _engineering number_ . It shows when it was designed and what vehicle it was _designed_ for. High nickel early blocks were much tougher metallurgy. You saved on buying roller lifters, but you get to spend on a carb, intake, ignition system, and possibly a forward rotation water pump. I'm really enjoying finding your channel. :-)

I have a 71 Cleveland 2V in my 75 ranger lowrider truck, 351M in 78 bronco ranger, 351W in 95 bronco XLT, and the 302 in my 94 bronco xl. I love all of them lol

Damn I'm jealous lol I just got my first bronco. It's a two tone pacific green and tan 96 xl with a 302 and 5 speed. But I have a feeling it won't be the only one I get.

GREAT JOB on collecting all this information! I have a few of these. My favorite is a 302 that has been thru two fires, and overheated severely two times due to radiator hose failures. Its a 33 year old motor and is still the best running block I've ever owned.

Yea I have an 88 f150 with a 302 and the thing has almost 300k miles on it and won't die. One of fords best engines for sure.

I put a mild 360 hp 375 ft lbs 351 w in a 1986 thunderbird turbo coupe. T-5 world-class transmission and 3.73 track loc disc brake diff. That car was brilliant.

Thanks for being thorough and descriptive. My dad passed me down a 1970 mustang coupe 351W and im trying to figure out how to restore it and get it running but I know nothing about cars and barely have money, this video helped.

Very good job of describing the Windsor and its Ford Roots, I did catch the screw up on the casting numbers but over all you did your homework, I am glad you did not mention Nichole used in blocks because there was not any of that metal used, I am going to refer people to watch your video so they can learn more about the Windsor.

I love my ‘79 351W, the low power rating numbers lie on these - with an RV cam it’s surprisingly torquey in my ‘59 Meteor.

Great video. I have the original 351W in my 69 Mach. Love the motor. Very durable and plenty of torque. After doing some bolt on upgrades, I decided that I want to preserve this engine and get a 427 SB to replace it.

You talking the sbf 427? That's a beast of an engine but the cost for a crate motor you can get a 5.0 aluminator block and get more gains. Though it is efi.

I have a 351w flat top pistons with solid roller cam 6.15 lift aluminum heads 2.02,1.60 valves. It screams! I seen where someone took a stock junkyard 351w hooked up turbos and got 1100 hp before it blew.

8:55 Ford put a Variable Venturi Carburetor on many early 80s small block V-8s including the 351/5.8L. It was a design meant to improve fuel mileage, but it was difficult for non-dealer mechanics to service, as it had to have a propane enrichment device attached to it while tuning it to properly adjust it. It was a real PITA and many owners just removed it and replaced it with an Autolite/Motorcraft 2000 series carburetor (2 Barrel). The two barrel could be easily jetted, rebuilt and it was a breeze to adjust the fuel idle balance. A good carb for replacement in the 2 barrel came from the 1973 351 Galaxie or LTD. Ford was also trying to reduce weight by putting a cast aluminum manifold on the 1980s 351/5.8 HO. It was OK, but exhaust gas recirculation could potentially corrode thru the casting walls, much like the junk aluminum EGR/Carb/manifold spacer plate used in the 70s. Ford had such a problem with the aluminum EGR port spacer plate that they started selling a cast iron replacement through their dealerships. The 351W/5.8L is the best alternative to the 302/5.0 in a work truck. The 351W has the best torque for pulling trailers and hauling heavy loads and will give better fuel mileage over the 460.

I drag raced using a VV carb, Left the metering rod seat adjusting tools on the carb ( sealed with an o-ring on each one) instead of putting thre plugs back in. My friend pulled the seat bolts out of the floor on the line, that was funny as hell !! He launhced and vanished inside... He never let off of it ! LOL Most VV screw ups wer the cold enrichment rod adjustments ( choke for clarity) and the early VV diaphragms wotld break ( redesigned and had to driull a small hole on bottom of the diaphragm cover to keep fuel out in case of rupture). They were genious design... they only Flowed as much CFM as the engine needed. Mine went on an FE block 428... LOL

@rockymntain My 1979 LTD Landau with the 351 Windsor came from the factory with a 2 barrel aluminum intake and what engine doesn't get better fuel mileage than a 460😂

The 351 was available until 97.in 97 Ford put out an f250 light duty that came with the 5.4. They continued to produce the identical trucks as the 96 f250 with the 5.8 they just made them an f250 “heavy duty”

I have a line on an extremely clean 95. From what I’ve heard the original 351W auto has been converted to a manual transmission by the previous owner. I can’t wait to see it in person.

I too am restoring an 85 Bullnose.. I went with a 5.0 Summit Racing with Holley Sniper EFI and C6 transmission.. Looking forward to progress on your built

Thanks for the vid! This engine is often overlooked. I've owned a few of them and had zero reliability issues. I just replaced the timing chain at about 80,000 miles as preventative maintenance.

I disagree with it being "overlooked". It's the go-to SBF for performance applications because dollar-for-dollar, you get more HP (and more potential HP) without spending any more money than you'd spend on a 302. Free HP is always a good thing.

My friend and I did this exact swap in 98’ high school. Took a 84’ H.O out of a rotted 2 by long bed and installed it in a 85’ step side 4by headers intake carb ignition, this truck flew it was the stang of trucks was a stick also very fast! Dud take more cross referencing than you would think but was worth it . It is much easier to swap a 350 into a square body but it was an awesome truck.

The Windsor 351 is a great street able platform. If your not trying to get way crazy power numbers.... but want damn good ones. This is an excellent option.... sad to see people think they can't build a Ford and simply LS swap anything they touch.

The LS engine weighs SIGNIFICANTLY less. There is MORE SUPPORT from the after-market. They make more horsepower per cubic inch than the Ford engine could ever DREAM OF, at HALF the cost. You can find parts for LS engines in ANY city, or town, across the US.. .Try to find valve cover gaskets for say... a 351 Cleveland at your local auto parts store.. GOOD LUCK with that! FORD absolutely SUCKS... and I say this as a Ford owner. I have a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with 351W engine... Almost EVERY 4 cylinder engine made today makes MORE HORSEPOWER and TORQUE than your or my factory Ford engine.. Not kidding.. and the 4 cylinders will get 30+ MPG! There is NO REASON to not DUMP the ford low power, low torque, gas guzzling, heavy, hard to find parts for, low compression, poor ignition system, PIG engine..My mustang is SO SLOW that I don't dare rev the gas at any late model honda, or Lexus, or I'll get blown off the road by an all-stock import who will probably be running his A/C with the windows up as I watch his tail lights disappear into the future, while I stop at every gas station every few miles... Ford knew NOTHING about how to build engines back in the day.. Even their mighty 427, or 460's were abysmal compared to any 4 or 6 cylinder made today... The 351W is "okay" if you are trying to stay original.. but that would be the ONLY reason..

Great work on the knowledge of the venerable 351 Windsor. Had one in an E250 van. Super tough and strong engine. Just to clarify, the 400(M) engine is a stroked Cleveland, 4" bore and 4 " stroke. The 351(M) is the tall deck 400(M) block with the 351 crank. They are still small blocks and will build killer fast and strong engines

That info is not correct at all! The 400 came out in 71 and the 351m after that as a destroked version of the 400. The 400 is not called “M” as reference..only the 351m because ford had 3 different 351 ci motors at the time and the “M” was a modified version of the 400. The Cleveland is a shorter deck height than the 351m/400 and has the big block bell vs the Cleveland having the small block bell. Only a few things are interchangeable between the Cleveland and the 351m/400 engines. The 351m/400 is considered a big block because it shares the big block bell housing pattern with the 429/460 engine.

You just gained a new sub. Besides the content which is great..I’ve got a 70 F100 and I’m rebuilding a 460 I got for it my first time as well...the production quality is great. Really enjoyed this

That 460 wants a roller cam and some light pistons. It will last forever. Same goes for a stock gm 454. Those stock pistons are heavy! My buddy blew up his dads farm truck 460 doing 140 going back and forth to L.A. from Camarillo so he could get acid back in high school. It was so loud and intimidating, one rev and necks snapped to look, lol. Stock build or it would've taken the high piston speed abuse. Have fun!

Very cool. Just pulled out a locked up 351w out of an 87 bronco and put together a roller 351w out of a 96 van to put back in.

I am glad you have chosen a 351 W . I've heard too much crap over too many years of people choosing the 351 C and thinking it's more powerful or is better engine . The 351 W is much more easily hot rodded and there are more parts available including after market heads .

Thanks BNG. Really love the info provided and learned a lot. Had my pen and paper writing stuff down. I want to do a 429/460 big block swap to a 351W this winter. Going to a 408 stroker. Don't think finding a 69-71 block is going to easy, most likely next to impossible. So the roller F block will be just fine for my build. Looking for no more then 600 hp. Thanks for sharing. 15+ years ago I was flat towing one of my 80’s F150’s with another F150. I bought some salt bags to put in the bed so that the rear tires didn’t slide around. A customer came out and told me about his son totaling his 85 F150 with the 351w H.O. and 7,000 miles. I said I was interested in it, gave him my number and he never called. I would have loved to had that engine. I’ve had 12+ F150’s, all but 1 had the 300-6.

Thanks for this video. I just bought a 1979 150 ranger 4wd. Came with the 300 v6. Trans, transfer case and axles were gone. Leaving me with the the easy decision to build back 2 wd and high hp like I always wanted anyway. If all 4wd stuff was there I would’ve most likely went back that way but HIGH HP, HERE WE COME! I’m going to look at a engine this eve that has been called all 3 versions of the 351 by different people. This video helps dramatically and should help me easily figure out what it is. It came if a f800 with a 4 speed. Someone added a Holley 4 bbl carb to it also so I’m very excited to see what it is. Def got my subscription and most likely will be posting a lot of questions for you and anyone else that can help me. I’m more familiar with newer engines and mostly fox body mustangs and a big fan of the 302 5.0. Heading into new terrain with this build but excited! Again, thanks!

Awesome review guy, still have mine was in a 78 Ltd II, friend from high school raced me with his built 305 in his el camino, he couldn't keep up,lol. Not sure what he had for a transmission but mine was that highway geared fmx, my engine was also bone stock two barrel, his was four barreled and had a high compression cam set up. These windsors are amazing!

I have an F4 in a 1994 F-150. This engine has 253k miles on it and still runs strong. Common issues (valve guide seals, rear main seal, and that blasted coolant jacket gasket where the head meets the intake manifold) are leaking a little, but nothing unmanageable (yet). If you own an EFI setup built in the 90s, keep an eye on your intake gaskets. There are 4 of them, and they like to crack when they get old. Vacuum leaks make life difficult for EFI setups.

Great video, great truck , they are my favorite. Things to be aware of, dont let anyone tell you that you dont need the flex plate , the starter needs it mostly for support so it doesn't uneveny wear out your teeth on the starter and flywheel. And the fan shroud , it needs that to for making sure the air flows through to the engine .

I've got one of the blocks designed for roller cam, but has the flats - summer 93 production. Tough SOB! 300 thousand original miles and still going.
