Thank you for posting these videos on the various kata breakdowns. I have been taking Shotokan Karate for just under a year and recently earned my blue belt. I discovered your videos when I was going for orange belt, and they have been a tremendous help along the way! I tend to analyze every movement and strive for perfection, and the way you show them in slow motion with different camera angles makes yours the absolute best tutorial videos on KZbin.

Very nice and detailed explanation...I did Heian Yondan and Bassai Dai (choose Bassai Dai myself, and my sensei hinted at me before that he wants wanted to see H. Yondan) for my first dan-graduation at the end of 2019, so i trained both of em excessively before, but this video even game me a handful of tips I never considered to even further improve it :) Great Video!

Excellent video, thanks. I found bunkai 2 interesting. We were told that the open handed reach forward is to grab the opponent's head and smash it down on to your knee, rather than performing a throw. I suppose both would work.

Again thank you for your well done Kata explanation. I don’t understand hips turning away from the direction of the technique. If you do an Oizuki with your hips square and someone pushes back on your punching hand, you’ll find power escaping from the punching shoulder. If your punching hip is 45 degrees forward, and someone pushes on your punching hand, the connection can be felt from your punching hand traveling across the shoulders, down your spine to the rear leg. Please try this test. I’ve demonstrated this for several decades successfully. Thanks again for a good video!

Thank you for your informative videos. I like how you provide tips on what to focus on. I would love to see you showing how to do some of the basic kihon for each kata and have much slower demonstrations of each kata. I find it very hard to keep up with the katas when first learning. Thank you.

Regarding Regarding your Morote Uke. I’ve pondered for years this technique. No one uses it in Kumite. It is usually done in a way that doesn’t explain the purpose of the supporting fist. I started to play with it in the ‘90s and decided that the hip had to swing in the same direction as the block. I changed the supporting fist to an open hand. One day during Kumite with a very talented woman, I did my version of Morote Uke and the poor woman flew backward sliding across the floor. I was very apologetic to her. I had NO idea that the Morote Uke would be so successful. Years later, I did it during Kumite with an old time Black Belt man and he also went flying backward and sliding across the floor on his back. He was shocked. I apologized, but he questioned why his Seniors had not shown him that technique. I pointed out that they probably didn’t know it as I had not been taught it, but discovered it on my own. Give it a try and let me know the result.

Very interesting But, in the part where we do morote uke and turn around to hit hidza Geri we also hit the knee with our hands, too. Like we grab the opponent's head and punch. And you don't touch your knee. Is this difference acceptable in Shotokan or is it a gross mistake?

Hello Sensai, your kata videos are so beneficial! :) One reason is because you use two cameras. You consider the perspective of the student who is watching. It is very difficult and frustrating to follow a kata video when the instructor is "backwards." Your tips are excellent! Osu! I am testing for Heian Godan soon and so I hope that you are making that video! Please make one for every kata. Most students are looking for help with kata, and yours are the best! Best regards.

The thing i dont understand when bunkai is demonstrated is why its defence against karate attacks this i think is a mistake and my biggest hate with bunkai is multi directional attacks which is just ridiculous. Kata bunkai functionality needs to be addressed and changed to reflect some realistic attacks. Iian abernathey kata applications address this and more and are worth a look on his youtube channel for any karate practitioner regaurdless of style.
