The made-for-television version of Johanna Spyri's family classic. Heidi (Jennifer Edwards), a young orphan girl, is sent to live with her grandfather (Michael Redgrave) in the beautiful Swiss Alps. The gruff and bitter old man views Heidi at first as an ill-mannered child and an unwanted responsibility, but he soon becomes quite attached to her. When Heidi is sent to Frankfurt to be a companion to Clara (Zuleika Robson), the crippled daughter of successful businessman Herr Richard Sesemann (Maximilian Schell), Heidi and her grandfather are saddened at their parting. Heidi finds Clara’s governess, Fraulein Rottenmeier (Jean Simmons), to be a kind woman, but the spoiled Clara is mean to Heidi. Heidi soon wins her over, though, and they become good friends. Still homesick, Heidi is sent on a two-week visit with her grandfather and is later joined by Clara. It is there that Clara overcomes her fears and learns to walk. This endearing drama, with a romantic subplot between Herr Sesemann and Fraulein Rottenmeier, features exemplary acting and a magnificent music score. It is a favourite classic tale enjoyed by all ages.
Director: Delbert Mann
Starring: Jennifer Edwards, Michael Redgrave, Maximilian Schell, Jean Simmons, Walter Slezak

Heidi was the first book I ever borrowed from the church library. I was eight. A young girl from Nairobi reading about and enraptured by the story of a Swiss orphan, a world away. Memories! I borrowed it over and over and over, and once I stayed late to return it and the librarian gave it to me instead of fining me. It then became the first book my younger sisters ever read. I insisted on drinking goat milk instead of cow milk because of Heidi. It was not till many years later that my mother figured out why.😂😂😂. I still want to move to and live on a self sustaining farm growing crops and keeping chicken and goats, and I will very soon.

Heidi by Johanna Spyri was the first story book my mother read to me and also the first story book she taught me to read by myself. The version that I was presented as a toddler was a story plus colouring book for a 3+year old. Oh! how much I loved that book. This movie simply brought back so many wonderful memories from my childhood years spending time on her lap reading to me. Thank you for sharing this.

What a beautiful movie, and I thought Jennifer Edwards was outstanding in making her screen debut in this movie. Best version of Heidi I've ever seen! It sounded like it was actually her singing that sweet song that her grandfather recognized as a song that his daughter (Heidi's mother) had sang. Outstanding acting, costuming, and breathtaking scenery also. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see the ending scene last a little longer, with some dialogue and more interaction between the actors. But this movie really lifted my spirits at a time when I really needed that.

Ok, I watched this gem of a movie to the end, and it’s superb! Why??… Because it’s full of feeling, emotion, hope, faith, love, and on and on! Had me smiling and crying and smiling and feeling joy through the whole thing! This is what life is about (or we should allow it to be! Especially in our meaningless lives we create for ourselves!!) …caused me to pause it and reflect on my own life while my tears flowed so much that I had to stop and blow my nose! During these times, I felt inspired to forgive my father in a more meaningful way, for his abandonment when I was a little child. And I even felt something positive that I’ve never felt before about it, that will help both of us! Also, to stop resisting a man who is in love with me, who has been for at least 8 years! Maybe I should marry him, after all! Toward the end of this wonderful movie I almost got the courage to call him to tell him I love him, after 5 years of not saying so! …And I even felt that I’ve been ignoring my God-given talents in art and music and dance that I should not ignore anymore, especially music and art! As I expressed before, this heartfelt movie is a gem, and the ending is superb! Those who thumbed it down must have dull lives, or are people who are numb or evil, or maybe only bothered to watch the first 29 seconds of it!!

Forgot to add that several years ago, at age 27 while in the midst of a very difficult marriage, I somehow got my hands on a very old copy of the book, Heidi, and started reading it while my toddler was napping. I found the story to be such a comfort to me, and I strongly felt of the author’s faith in God as I read her story. In a particular paragraph, I felt such peace as I read. I’ve decided, after watching this movie, I’ll go back and read the book again, as I’ve always wanted to, but life “got in the way” as it always does! …I’m looking forward to reading it again. 🥰

Very beautiful movie, i think it's the best version of the "Heidi". Thanks for posting this masterpiece, it's a gift for all the family. I like so much to see Michael Redgrave, Jean Simmons and of course Maximilian Schell, one of my favorite actors.

The first unabridged novel that I read when I was a child. My mother bought it for me from MV Logos. This story has a special spot in my heart. Love the picturesque alps of this movie.

Happy 55th Anniversary of Heidi Bowl. BTW, someone in FaceBook mentions that Jennifer Edwards participated in last Sunday's Jets-at-Raiders game on NBC.

Now that this version of the Heidi movie is finally on line, I just watched it for the very first time. This version is very touching. A different version was released on DVD some years ago, and it was referred to as the movie that cut into an NFL game, and I ordered it, but when I received it, that version had different characters playing the parts. NBC had the choice of letting the game continue to the end and start the movie after, join it in progress, or simply just cut away to start the movie on time, and that was the choice they made, which pleased the Heidi audience, but enraged football fans, especially Jets and Raiders fans who lived in the time zones affected. If they had run the game until it's end and simply joined the movie in progress, the Heidi audience would have only missed the first 7 minutes, whereas 7 years later, what some refer to as the Willy Wonka game, that time NBC had to stay with the game with the same Raiders, only then it was against the Washington Redskins, which went into overtime, and ran nearly 45 minutes past it's end time, resulting in many angry children and their parents missing the first half of Willy Wonka. They did However air the movie again the following Spring, at which time there would be no NFL games to interfere.

This is the movie that put the networks on notice that pro football was here to stay. My family tuned in to see this movie a few minutes early. There was a football game that was tied and about to run over into the premiere of this highly anticipated special. One team was driving and getting close to scoring when the network cut to the movie. (After all, nobody really cared about pro football. Superbowl 1 was not even a sell out.) The network phone lines lit up with upset viewers. Even one 11 year old who had never seen a football game could not understand why they did not finish the game then show the movie a few minutes late. Great movie btw.

One of the books I read as a child was Johanna Spry's "Heidi". My name is Heidi as well so I obviously took an interest so much that I also read Charles Trittens "Heidi Grows Up" and "Heidi's Children". Both good books.
