This has always been one of my favorite Shirley Temple movies, very underrated compared to some of her other films! One of the interesting facts about it, is that it's the only one to actually acknowledge the Great Depression!

The other one Poor Little Rich Girl was copyrighted only for Asia, Australia, and England/ United Kingdom. I ended up doing research on this because THIS WAS THE ONE never able to purchase thru VCR format then later DVD. I was VERY annoyed. When the copyright needed renewing, whoever had the copyright (Paramount, 20th Cent FOX…I don’t know, BUT they missed / overlooked Poor Little Rich Girl, which opened it up for another company to purchase. Those that drive on the Left side of the road got it! We could buy it….have it…BUT IT WAS marketed mostly in other parts of the world. It was NOT FORMATTED TO PLAY ON North America VCR/DVD machines! (Different parts of the world’s machines are coded for their area.). Ours, North America. They didn’t tell you that when purchasing. These were the catalog days! North America must have purchased back the copyrighting the last 5-8 years or so because NOW its available. I collected Shirley memorabilia for two decades or so and discovered after her Baby Burlesque shorts she made 19-20 child films BEFORE the teen films she began making in 1940. I’ve enjoyed discovering / watching her teen films spanning 1940 - 1949. Since you Went Away and Bachelor and the Bobbie-soxer are my Fav.’s. I can talk Shirley all day long. Sorry if I went on too long. 🤗. Oh dear….I still have the 1970’s LP they compiled of all her songs. That came out before VCR’s. All you could buy was her singing songs. TIME TO STOP. ✔️

@winkieblink7625 Gracias Gracias for your research & sharing. I too grew watching her & I'm still a child at heart, at the ripe age of 66yrs. I use to love humming her music as I did my chores, lol. Truly lovely memories. I so pray her descendants appreciate her movies. What a true National Treasure she is for our Nation. R.I.P. Shirley Temple. 🙏 "Isa"

I only imagine how disappointed Hollywood bosses were her growing so fast. I bet they wanted her to stay 4 years old for 7 years of contract with MGM.
@Giulia-d8f
@Giulia-d8f 10 ай бұрын
In her autobiography, she said the studio put her in very short dresses to keep her looking younger. They were also careful with casting and camera angles. In a way, it's a shame because she was an excellent actress who became a beautiful teenager, but America wasn't as interested in her once she hit puberty.

Thank goodness my old mother made sure we knew about Shirley Temple movies. That was her era. We never could pick up the tap dancing though. From early child in 1970s into adulthood, I have nearly watched all of Shirley Temple movies, even when she was older, but this one slipped through the net. So glad I found it. I think it was one of her best, even at the end of her curly haired career. Such innocence, yet she portrayed herself to capable, and immersed herself in the role with conviction and delivered with such gusto and happiness. Thoroughly enjoyed. We need this in our world right now. Come on MGM, Universal and Disney etc., show us what you are made of and give 2023 a great movie for whole family to go and see to lighten all our hearts. Very uplifting movie. Amanda Duff and Joan Davies so beautiful. Wonderful cast and great music numbers. Thank you

I love Shirley Temple movies..Saw them over and over as a child and enjoyed them with my children. But people were not more wholesome, respectful, and kind hearted in those days..I was born in 1957 and times were NOT better then. People just hid things more. Nobody knew about how many wives were beaten and cheated on. And whipping children was not looked down on. I vividly remember our neighbours whipping their boys for bed wetting. That was. considered a normal thing to do to your child. I vividly remember how children with cognitive disabilities were mocked in school, or sent away to institutions. Bette Davis and Beverley Sills sent their children away to institutions and hardly ever saw them again. People thought that was a good thing..People were just as cruel and crude, just better at pretending to be decent folk..As far as more "entertaining" that of course is a matter of opinion, I agree with you on that because I much prefer old movies and old tv shows..and old music..from about the 1600s... to anything modern, but doesn't mean they were better, just more to my taste..As far as more God loving, one doesn't really know. The millions who nowadays call themselves "Christians " but who demonize immigrants and completely ignore what Jesus taught about loving thy neighbor are certainly not Christians no matter how much they pretend to be..Whether they have always been that way and just hid their feelings until 2015 one can't be sure.

This movie was very well made and Shirley Temple was just so adorable in the movie. Like I said before I just wish I was born when Shirley Temple was a little girl. I would have loved to meet her. If you had been her age you may never have gotten to meet her, but there is a good chance your Mother would have given you a curly hairdo like hers. That was so popular. I am 71 but still have my Shirley Temple doll I got for Christmas around age 8 (1959). I never had a Shirley hairdo but I remember lots of girls with long hair in my class coming to school with sausage curls!

Her childhood career was nearing the end but I really love this film. Shirley took on a more assertive and slightly bratty but sweet tomboy role. It is a nice change and sort of a Jane withers type and she was a fantastic role model in this film for 1930s little girls in standing up to bullies and solving problems!

You know, I am a massive movie buff but I never knew of this film before now. It brought me so much joy and yet so much sadness,just a year before world war 2. I like to think that the majority if homo sapiens wish no ill will or pain and torture on any human or animal down to even the tiniest insect but yet our history shows us we can ve brainwashed by dictators and lose our own identity and original and unique way of thinking which in my own mind and belief includes empathy when we are born as innocents,however if we dig deep enough we can conquer all. What is the hogus bogus gibberish trash that you wrote that betrays the severe damage that you suffer from in your prefrontal cortex to the extent that you hardly have a vegetative mind to live with that is why you are writing laughable foolishness. What are you talking about idiot, wake up. Yes this was before WWII but 20 years after WWI. All the time there have been wars and yet all the time there were always decent, innocent and God-fearing people. Men are born with sin that is why after the innocence of childhood, usually comes a time initiation into immorality and filth, so unless you come to The Powerful Ever Living God Jesus Christ you can never have your sins forgiven or your life straightened out. Come to The Powerful Ever Living God Jesus Christ and He will forgive you the years of lunacy, ignorance, stupidity, blindness and satanism of unbelief and blasphemy, sin, filth and foolishness; and He will raise you from the spiritual death that you languish in as He raised Lazarus from the dead by The Power of His Divinity. Wake up before it is too late for you
