Here are 3 trucks collecting in Berkeley under the new automated system they put in place. This is probably the least ASL friendly city in the region so it makes it tough on them. Tiny streets, parked cars everywhere etc.. Bryn and I moved many carts for them since the residents have been used to semi auto since the mid 80s. Hard to break bad cart placements habits, and thats their biggest hurdle to overcome in my opinion. Once thats sorted out, and the drivers get a bit more experience, these trucks will be far more productive.
I was pretty excited to see some of these in person though. They have a fleet of these Multitasks on CCC chassis, and one lonely Mack LEU. They are pretty fun to watch and I think they have a lot of potential too. Though I think that Heil can make a huge improvement if they were to make the whole gripper assembly tip into the hopper further much like the Rapid Rail arm does so that they can shake the carts without moving the entire arm itself in and out. That would solve the problem with spilling and would also stop the 20 and 30 gallon carts from not dumping all the way as you see in this video(he has to get out and grab them with the lid open to prevent that from happening). It'd even reduce wear on the arm itself. Other than that, I quite like the design and would like to see them grow in popularity. Unfortunately I didnt get any footage of Berkeley's manual bins being dumped.
They do still have a few rear loaders which likely collect in the hills and other impossible to automate areas of the city or help these trucks out. Recycling is still handled by Ecology Center, semi-auto with Labrie Expert2000 split body MSLs on CCC chassis.
A huge thanks goes to the drivers here, all of which were extremely nice to us while we were there. Hope you all enjoyed it!
