Othan contains several ancient combat protection spells and words of Odin, god of the north and lord of poetry and war. The first part of the song is a combination of spells found in various bracteates. These bracts were produced mainly during the migration period until the 19th century AD. in northwestern Europe. They were generally made of Roman gold, which the Germanic tribes had received as money in times of peace. Although Odin enjoys war, he also takes pleasure in poetry. Othan has a second part where the white owner of the enchantments recites the words that Odin gave the man: a spell chanted under the shields to bless them and protect the warriors. (Hávámal, stanza 156) The third part is darker, since in it a spell is invoked for active combat that can have the power to stop an arrow in its flight. (Hávamál stanza 150) After that the name of the highest Norse god is repeated in a wolf, barking mantra, in part to convey the feeling that ancient Norse warrior groups were often perceived as herds of animals.
