Their Rituals are absolutely FANTASTIC live. Can't wait to see them again if they show up on tour again

My brother and I will see them at the Oslo Spectrum March next year. So looking forward to that. Tickets were a drunk purchase during my birthday party, but am not regretting it at all. Just wondering if I should put on my Sami dress for the occasion.

Othan is an alternative spelling of Odin. It’s a song of worship to Odin, the North Germanic and particularly Scandinavian god of wisdom and war. I’m Scandinavian born and raised, and it’s insane to me the way Heilung are able to play on certain chords of my heart with their music. It just feels deeply like home to me.

The reason why it sounds like a ritual is because it *is* a ritual. Their music isn't just a performance, its meant to be a blessing of sorts to those who listen; designed to heal people emotionally/mentally as well as reconnect the people of the present with their ancestors, the Earth and each other. The lead singer, Maria Franz (along with the rest of the band) are Norse pagans. She's done a few videos discussing her beliefs. The man on the left at 3:35, Kai Uwe Faust, is an actual shaman/priest and is considered the "spiritual leader" of the group. Despite his intimidating appearance and voice, he's actually a really nice dude. For Christopher Juul (Maria's husband) his father is a Gothi (Norse priest).

would be a good start, indeed.....

The first part is indeed a protection spell that is being chanted. The second part is meant to be Odin himself promising to protect them, so the male lead (I think) attempts to shamanically reach an altered state of consciousness as to speak with the voice of Odin himself!

I think the first thing i saw of them was Krigsgaldr Thats is such amazing live video the lead female singer is mesmerizing I love the band concept and commitment and of course the primal nature Being a celt ; , pagan or pre christian and nordic mythology hold a fascination to me At times it sounds like Tuvan throat singing This was such a great surprise Loved it

Crazy, that i'll be traveling in Europe during their tour. It was a mere coincidence that they'll be performing in Stuttgart, Germany when i'm out there. Hell yeah, I got tickets. I couldn't pass that up.

This has nothing to do with the Middle Ages and goes back much further to the Celtic and Germanic tribes. Some rituals also go back to finds of bog bodies that have been very well preserved by the bog and one has gained insight into the killing rituals and also clothing from that time. Even hairstyles from the hair, some of which are well preserved.

..While I have a general interest in ancient European history, this particular musical expression of it does not do much for me .. The female lead has a good set of pipes, but the throat singing type thing is not a sound that appeals to me .. It is actually rather unpleasant to my ears .. Maybe some of this stuff could be suitable for background music in documentaries where an ancient mysterious, tribal sound is needed, but as something to listen to for musical entertainment, it's a No from me.
@playitagainsue4 ай бұрын
@@wayne_twentyfive I hear you, Wayne. It isn't something I would sit down and listen to either. I see it more as theatre. The best part is when the woman is singing for sure 🤗

@@playitagainsue I kind of see where you're coming from, Sue, regarding the theatrical aspects .. But honestly, I'm not sure I could even enjoy this as theatre if this is typical of their live performances .. I think a maximum of 10 minutes of watching people wear strange clothes, make mysterious noises, and bang their sticks and bones while not much happens would more than see me out ! 😅 .. Apologies to all those many fans of this group and style of art, but I'm just not feeling it.
