There needs to be a bonus (something like +5 or +10 against inf or universal) for formation attack units. Should also probably consider dropping the charge bonus by 5-10 for barbarian units. The bonus are just too high presently. If the tactics of combat come down to simply delivering a charge its not really great for the game. I also agree that sword cav should probably get a bonus against infantry to make them more useful. Shield wall also needs sorted immediately.

I think one thing that this video reminded me of in terms of changes from Rome 1 to Rome 2 is the lack of quality vs. quantity fights. I remember seeing a lot of videos and playing a lot of games in Rome 1 where I would take a smaller number of upgraded units against a large unupgraded force. Those battles were interesting and highlighted the importance of maneuvering. In Rome 2 it always seems to be that numbers win

Boii and Tylis the current most used factions in tournaments. With some nice tournament rules such as 8 max of the same type etc you can however make things a bit more interesting. Hey, i've been following your videos for quite some time on and off. Thing is, i finally got a good enough computer to be able to play Rome 2 and because off this im very late into the mulitplayer arena for rtw2. Id like to thank you for some excellent beginners and faction focus videos, yesterday i played my first three games and i won them all. Christian Johannesson that depends on what you are into. Caesar in Gual adds the Boii and Nervii to multiplayer as well as a campaign. Hannibal at the gates is a fun campaign in my eyes and adds more factions. Tylis is good in multiplayer and comes with the Balkan pack.

Christian Johannesson I think it really up to your preference to time period. I always enjoyed the punic wars, so i had a lot of fun with the Hannibal at the Gates campaigns. Whereas Ceasar in Gual never enticed me. Or just monitor deals light humblebundle and grab them when they are on sale :)

Wish thracian warriors have frenzy. Wish cheap spears like eastern spearmen, vigiles and other non hoplite cheap spearmen for other factions have javelins. And Shield wall is removed from every unit or seriously nerfed. Formation attack aquires some bonuses as there is no incentive to use formation attack. And sword using cav gets bonus vs infantry.

yes but that would require basic thought into how units interact on a higher dimension then ROme 2 currently allows. CA might have some seriously talented game developers but they are wasting time and energy in places it doesn't matter. Kill moves? Seriously, soldiers did not kill each other with kill moves, soldiers killed each other with quick stabs to the face, neck, thighs, arms and arm pits with a rare opportunity in the central mass.

tbone martinez ^^^^ Holy shit this. Who the fuck cares about some fictional, action-movie "executions" when it ends up making the actual gameplay worse?? The only time I see kill moves is when I take the time to watch a replay and zoom in on the combat. Not when I'm actually playing the game. It honestly looks worse with the kill moves. There isn't enough variety. I end up watching five dudes kill someone in the exact same complicated and inefficient way; all at the exact same time. It's fucking stupid.

with that Illyrian faction I tore through Hastati like a knife through butter with axesmen. Not the levies, the next step up. Same thing with Epirus' phalanx. Damn that was a slaughter fest. The axes get overlooked a lot in this game.

As one of the folks who's been out of the loop since last spring, I'll be very interested to see how the Suebi stack up when their faction focus rolls around. (Yes, I know it will be quite some time, since the FF videos run more or less in alphabetical order). That said, I imagine the answer to "how do the Suebi compare to the Boii?" will simply be "badly."

A good build against boii could be : tarentine cav, or numidian cav, particularly against the heavy cav of the boii, and then, to block infantry a spam of thureos spears with javelins and square formation perhaps....

Thorax swords actually used to have a decent charge,along with hoplites, they should give some of it back back so they arent, well useless, though hoplites can actually hold. Maybe formation attack should confer a melee defense bonus as roman hellenic and punic units typically have a lower charge in addition to lower melee defense when compared to celtic or germanic troops.

I agree, its part of the debate since the game was released that there seems to be a lot of features in the game that make it very arcade like. For instance shield wall is an un-necessary addition to the game. When units fight in formation they automatically formed a wall with their shields. Making it a button to push that magically creates better melee defense is just more tedious micro management. Other examples are frenzy charge, hoplite wall, and trample, seriously these are things that should be passive!

Wow, you have actually seen anyone use flaming arrows in multiplayer, because I havent! It is near to impossible to fire flaming arrows without it hurting your own men and they will not get any kills. But wait a second, if it decreases melee attack so may it be very useful in hoplite armies. I will go and check on that rigth now!

StoneWolf In the older patch where morale can be broken with a succession of morale decreasing factors like fear, attacked in flank/rear, flaming arrows, etc..., people used to use fear units combined with flaming arrows and other factors in succession to break even roman infantry with few casualties. The newer patches made units stayed longer and is harder to break render these tactics very tough to succeed, thus people gave them up. Another point to notice is flaming arrows are not effective at killing, so people rarely use them now unless they want to run elephants amok or break a wavering unit. Otherwise standard arrows are better off in terms of killing power.

Not really. You're going to be out-maneuvered by the Boii sword infantry and once they get around your pikes you'll be screwed. Pikes are very difficult to use in multiplayer. Macedon has nothing in the way of solid infantry to secure the pike formations flanks and their cav will lose to Boii cav if supported by infantry (which should almost always be the case). I'm sure there is a way to beat Boii with Macedon but it wouldn't be easy.

no, a human player is never going to send his sword units head first into pikes which is why they are pretty much pointless in multiplayer. Sending heavy shock cav into sword formations might work in the first few charges but again no human player(unless they are brand new) is going to set his troops up in a line to be cycle charged by shock cav without bringing in spears to support. Levy freemen in particular have a javilins that can kill at least 10 -15 heavy melee cav in a single volley if they have already lost hit points.

Hardly anything can beat Roman Inf in a slug fest without a charge. It just all comes down to how each opponent handles each other's speedbumps. I sometimes like to bring a Praetorian Guard and leave it behind the main engagement just begging for an enemy to start to break through lol.

Rush4in Rome has to be THE power faction in the game. Roman swords are the best. Best armour:melee defence:melee attack ratios in the game. They trounce anything in a slugfest. Barbarians only win because they kill so many on the charge giving them a massive numerical advantage for the rest of the grind out. But since Rome as so many fodder units, and access to elephants, great skirmishers etc. they have to be the best. Barbarians are one dimensional - sword spam only. I've seen so many different builds with Rome that you never quite know what to expect. Some players take sheer sword spam, some take a balance with cav, others take the elite skirmishers, others try elephants. Using meatshields as Rome is the only conditional factor and to be honest it isn't difficult. Hastati and those cheap-ass spears, just spread them thin in front of your main line - others use cav to blunt charges too, there are too many options. This is why Rome beat the barbarians in the game for me, they have more options than the barbarians giving them more adaptability.

All spear units should have the option of throwing their spear at an enemy and doing extra damage compared to say leves with just having javelins. Once thrown, they draw a short sword or long stabbing dagger and take a buff to their attack since they are fighting without a spear. Levy freemen in particular should have 2-3 javelins, and then at the end throw their spear or keep it. Axmen should be using their ax like they really did in combat, hacking at an enemy shield and should kill with concussion or deep gashes. Right now they stab with their axe instead of swinging it? Stupid

A spear isn't designed to be thrown unless it's a throwing spear like a javelin. If a spear unit throws their only weapon that would make them defenseless and useless, in addition the spear would do less damage and have less range than a throwing spear or javelin.

Attila begins in 395 AD so past most of those factions time. Rome owned Egypt and Greece by that point and had for quite some time. It will be focused on the decay of the Roman Empire and the great migrations of the barbarian tribes.
