We have ordered your roses - they are gorgeous - thank you for the hard work you all do there. I wish you could get more old antique roses from Europe - the demand for them is higher than you think. We have a small nursery here and we get constant requests for old roses because we have some growing here. They line out really fast and easily and are climbers. We are hunting for the old ones - some go back hundreds of years and just are relentless growers and fragrant. Who has them?? Even the older ramblers and shrubs have been patented and hybrid. It's a terrible loss - they carried more roses than the constant blooming ones.

To minimize shock, recommend selecting and prepping destination *before* digging up the plant/rose. Doing this first will ensure you can actually use that destination (no rocks, poor soil drainage, etc.) and not make the plant stress while you solve any problems!

Hello! Good question; unfortunately, we cannot ship to Canada; But whether a rose can grow in Ontario will depend on its hardiness zone. Some roses can grow in the hardiness zone as low as 2 (-50 to -40); Also, for more winter hardy roses, own-root roses are best. I hope this helps!

I would like to uproot my rose bushes and place them in large pots. I purchased Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Trees/Shrubs and would like to know if i can use this 100% in the pot or do i need to use a 50/50 mix of native soil and the Miracle grow together. Also, do i still need to use the manure and fish bone meal in my process when amending the soil to prepare for replanting. Thank you.

I would recommend mixing the Miracle Grow soil with your native soil as that brand contains an added granular fertilizer that can be very strong on the roots during transplanting, especially if it is not a grafted variety but grown on its own roots. Amending with natural materials such as bone meal and aged cow manure will boot the available nutrients in the soil, making them more readily available for the roots to absorb.

Good question! For hot weather, you will want to use it every 2 days for a week, and if it is normal, climate every 10 days, so one time before and then continue after transplanting your rose. I hope this helps!

Certainly! Depending on the variety, I would recommend a pot that is 7 gal. or larger to give it plenty of root space.

Can we transplant roses in the fall or should we wait for spring... I have special roses from my great grandmother's roses... They do spread and these roses would be from 100 year old roses... You know what I mean... They are a double pink with verigated leaves... They do not get enough sun where they are and have not bloomed even tho they are fed enough organic feeds... They have spread from 1 plant I have 5 but I wish to do it right to keep this rose line alive...

The best window of time to transplant a rose is early spring, while the rose is still dormant. You'll also want to make sure there is no more threat of frost or freezing weather.

Not necessarily, you will want to preserve 5-6 ft. of height on 4-6 of the healthiest main canes. That way you will have canes to train up the new trellis or arbor as soon as it is transplanted.

does the age of a rose bush matter in moving it? I've been thinking of moving a rose bush from my grandparents' house. From what my dad told me, it was my grandmother's and she's been gone for over 40 years. I need to move some shrub roses that I planted last year, in August, back about a foot from where they are in the rose bed so they aren't competing with the boxwood as both mature in size. They haven't even been in the ground for a whole year yet. Should I still prune them back as far as suggested in this video? Thank you for any advise you have.

Yes, you will want to prune as suggested in the video so that the plant does not have a large amount of foliage it needs to support after transplanting since it may experience some shock from being moved.

Early spring after all freezing weather has passed is the best time to transplant as the rose is still dormant. Fall is tough because you risk not having the plant get established in time before freezing weather comes, leaving more opportunity for transplant shock and root die back.

A 2' hole is a good start, you will just want to make sure there is plenty of room to cover the root ball and the canes about 1"-2" higher than the soil line was previously. This will promote strong root development and encourage branching.

My dad gave me a rose bush that bloomed very well for a few years, then it stopped blooming, and has powdery mildew. I cannot seem to find the right treatment. Also I want to move it from the south side of our house where it gets extremely hot and much sunshine. It’s about 40 years old. I think it’s a climber,?? There are six pink blooms on each flower. I will it to live.

You might want to try testing your soil to make sure it has the proper nutrient levels to keep your rose happy and healthy! Poor soil is the most common cause of roses loses their vigor over the years. Transplanting it with plenty of amendments to the soil may be just the key!

One thing wasn’t clear to me though: can someone please explain what is meant by when he says: Amend with good organic compost mulch, such as peat moss or garden mulch (paraphrasing, so hopefully not misconstruing!) what is meant by “organic mulch” ? I didn’t think “garden mulch” could be used as a soil amender ??
