Hello, My rose will be coming in a couple days. My question is, should I plant it in a pot until Spring since it is Oct. 10th today and our first freeze is said to come around this or next week. I live in WV. 26719.
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 2 күн бұрын
Hi! If you are less than 6 weeks away from your first frost, you can overwinter your roses until springtime when it starts to warm up more. When you first receive your rose, please do not keep it in the shipping container for longer than two weeks. Please transplant your rose into a larger container and then follow the instructions below on overwintering. Overwintering Steps Plant roses in a 10 in" container with Organic potting soil that does not contain granular fertilizer. We highly recommend our Heirloom Roses Living Soil heirloomroses.com/products/heirloom-roses-living-soil or Kellogg's (Organic not Organic Plus), EcoScraps, Fox Farms, or Espoma. Store the rose in an unheated garage or shed until after your last frost in the Spring. There is not a "lowest level temperature" that you need to monitor with these roses. Simply removing them from the natural elements allows them to become dormant without the roots being damaged thus ensuring your roses will come back next spring. Water a little every few weeks only if they start to dry out. If they are wet when you check them, do not water them until they dry out further. We do not recommend growing them inside the home, they will not thrive and eventually die. If you do not have a garage/shed to store your roses, you can wrap the outside of the pot and the canes in burlap, leaving the top still open so that you can water it or it can get some rain water. You can also make a temporary enclosed space with tarps. You can view our article, along with a helpful video about overwintering your container roses here. heirloomroses.com/blogs/how-to-articles/preparing-and-protecting-your-container-roses-for-the-winter After the last frost has passed in the spring, you can bring your potted roses back outside and plant them. Depending on the temperature difference between the garage and external temperatures, you may need a few days to let them harden off. We recommend that you prune a couple of inches off of the canes to stimulate new growth. You should begin to see new growth within a few weeks and can resume fertilizing every 3-4 weeks as needed.

Roses are my absolute favorite and I’ve been growing roses for 15 years, been managing garden centers in central CA for 7+years I’m in charge of all the rose ordering where I work & believe me people here want the works! They want easy, hardy, long blooming, fragrant disease resistant roses and that’s a tall order to fill - fortunately through out all of my years of gardening experience I can safely recommend 10 that fit the bill - 1st Julia Child, 2nd Violets Pride, 3rd Olivia Rose Austin, 4th Pretty Lady Rose, 5th Sunbelt South Africa, 6th Earth Angel, 7th Perfume Factory, 8th Walking on Sunshine, 9th Eustacia Vye and 10th Forever Yours. Hope this helps someone out there! Honorable mentions Sespe Sunrise, Maui Sunrise, Dark Desire, Madame Anisette and Like No Other 🌹 👍

I have always root pruned when transplanting a large rose, especially a climber. I’ve always had success that way. Sometimes those climber roots are just so big and so long. Is it always best not to prune any of the roots, or are there times when one should?
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 15 күн бұрын
Hi! It really depends in the maturity of the plant. For a larger established rose, (2-3 years) you can definitely prune the roots. You might see a set back after transplanting but that is normal, the plant will bounce back. For a younger plant that it is just getting established, if the roots are not too long, you can transplant it as it is without pruning the roots.

What a great detailed video! I just bought my first climber (Fruity Petals) and I am clueless. It was on a whim and I didn’t have an immediate place in ground to plant it so I planted it in a 5 gallon nursery pot and am thinking about overwintering it in my unheated garage until Spring so I can find a spot to put it in the ground. I am curious, what time of year are you doing this heavy pruning? And do I want to prune my very young bush or do any prep this fall before over-wintering it? It is now late September and I am in Zone 6b, NE Ohio. Appreciate any and all suggestions.
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 22 күн бұрын
Hi! We recommend doing this heavy prune in the late winter or early spring when your rose is just coming out of its dormant state. As for help with overwintering, roses grown in pots and other containers should be prepared and protected before your first frost. Pruning the canes back to 18”-24” and removing any damaged or diseased foliage will prepare your plants to go dormant for the winter and make storing them easier. For more help on winter prep for your potted roses see our how to article on our website. heirloomroses.com/blogs/how-to-articles/preparing-and-protecting-your-container-roses-for-the-winter

I am a first time rose grower and my main canes were not trained to grow horizontal. How do I fix this? Or do I have to cut them all out?
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 20 күн бұрын
Hi! You should still be able to train your canes horizontally it may just take more time and effort. First, you should identify the flexible canes and gently start to bend them horizontally and then secure them to a structure. Be sure to space the ties every 8-10 inches or so, but not to tight to avoid damaging them. Finally, you will need to gradually adjust them in stages, as not to snap them.

Im bummed out because my roses are dying. 😢. I tried Miracle Gro accordingly and sprayed for disease & pests. I give them a good drenching of water until the water drains on the bottom of the pot. A week later, the moisture meter i use tells me that the soil is moist. I wait a few days and the tip of the leave begin to dry. My hybrid tea roses that i planted on jan 2028 are on 3 gallon container. I think the containers are way too big for the young & dying roses. The climate is around 72 degrees throughout the year. I may try planting them in smaller pots so the plants can have rapid drainage., maybe 1 gallon pots or there abouts then monitor the moisture. Any comments would be deeply appreciated😢. Yes, I do use potting soil.

Hello! While the sparse/pruned look might not look the greatest for a short time, as spring rolls in, your rose will begin to push several new canes and new growths. These new canes will cause the rose to fill out again, and to produce even more prolific growth and blooms than the previous year.

can i use this same method to plant hydrangea trees?
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses Ай бұрын
Hi! We recommend following these steps when planting your hydrangea. Hydrangea can be planted in the spring or fall. Choose a location that is in at least partial shade with well-draining soil. When planting, dig a hole two to three times as wide as the nursery pot, and add a generous heap of organic compost. This compost should replace at least 20% of the soil you will place back around the plant. Loosen the roots of the plant and place it into the hole, ensuring the root ball is above the soil level by about ½-1”. Place the soil and compost back around the plant and tamp it down, ensuring the plant is upright. Water till a large puddle forms and let it slowly soak in. Water again when the topsoil is dry. Top dressing with a thick layer of mulch will keep the soil moist. As a rule of thumb, plant each Hydrangea a minimum of 3’ apart. Hydrangea appreciate a fresh top dressing each growing season and the addition of a slow-release fertilizer such as a 15-10-10 for an extra boost of nutrients. For more info on our collection of hydrangeas, visit our website here. heirloomroses.com/blogs/perennial-plant-care/hydrangea-one-plant-in-different-varieties

@heirloomroses

Hi. 1-2 inches means that when you're watering in your container, you should pour water into you're container until about 1-2 inches of your container is full of water. This should be right around a gallon of water total per rose. Hope this helps!

Hello, depending on how long the blooms have been on the plant, they can begin to shatter and drop petals. This is very normal. We would recommend deadheading the spent blooms and continuing to water your roses following the guidelines in this video.
