This is Jackie she was not purposely taught this behavior. She was actually raised by humans and released in the wild when she was older. She actually has a deep love for humans but now that she is older and has had her own babies so she has learned to hold tourists hostage to get food for her and her own baby. She is not aggressive. If she wanted to she could easily eliminate everyone there! She has never hurt anyone besides nibbling on fingers to get what she wants. She gained to much weight from these tourist feedings and is now on a strict diet program with the park service.

Thank you very much, not sure if there's much it could be done now, maybe change the route for tourists, or settle her to place where there are no tourists? But you probably know better, how is she responding to strict diet? She would probably then ask for even more food from humans. Once I've seen video of people using huge machines to take down trees, there was last tree standing and all around it, as far as you can see, destroyed trees. When machine started to take down this tree, orangutan attacked the machine, it was so sad sad sad, poor orangutan got its homeland destroyed and was fighting alone against machine that she couldn't fight, really really sad.

I'd say just sit still and don't look at the animal directly in the eyes, which they see as aggression. Also don't show your teeth. Just stay quiet. However, I'm beginning to think this particular group of orangutans have learned that if they grab a human and hang on, they'll get food. I don't think they mean harm, but perhaps if people just moved away quietly and did NOT offer food, that might help. Either that, or offer food, but leave it out of reach, so the orangutan needs to let go of the human in order to reach the food.

They can’t. The studied strength is not as it seems. The reality is that a chimp is something like 1.5x strength. A human who feels in danger and willing to fight back (and has good strength) is only in danger from the bites (in this situation). An orangutan is not going to snap your arm, unless you’re very unprepared for something it’s going to do and you have weaker bones/muscles structures. I was interested in this while reading up on Gorillas. And I read a few papers on it, and there’s this strong myths that many greater apes have freakish strength. And the ones that do have freakish strength (Gorillas) can be very standoffish.

@@nick-dq1hh that sounds like the true reality here, people throwing out these 4x 5x 6x numbers are just that, fantasy... orangs are flesh and blood alike us, they are not somehow many multiples stronger, yet so close to us in physiology.. true they are strong, and unlike many of us, they are on point all the time, ready to react, and suspicious naturally, like all wild animals must be to survive. Most of us are just mushy, and distracted by default, but given a strong human, in great shape, and mentally sharp, tuned to the environment and situation at hand, an orang is not going to grab them and snap their limbs like a twig, and even the orang knows this, that's why they show a healthy respect for us, in a subliminal sizing up of our physical capability and possible threat, not that they are looking for a fight ,or confrontation, just out of precaution for the natural world, like we should be doing as well... They are also a bit uncoordinated and increasingly clumsy as they get more aggressive in any kind of response, this is easily used to our advantage, and can quickly be used to create a situation in which the orang is just surprised or shocked in the moment, and will naturally just try to disengage.. given this useful approach and tactic, I would surmise that most any physically fit and decently adept man, would be able to dominate and overwhelm even a large male orang, if care is taken to strategically manipulate the given advantages.,.

Pigs indeed are very conscious and can recognize a spots on their bodies in mirror and will try to remove it. And oragunants are for sure even more advanced than pigs. This oragutan is totally concious and understands that he can make food for as long as she's holding someone captive - she don't have reason to do it - she'll let him go when she's eaten enough - but she understands the process and choses to use her superior strength to grab this dude and demand for food in exchange.

That is actually very bad. Like if someone is not surrounded by people and guides and they run out of food the orangutan may snap his or her arm and if there are other orangutans surrounding the person may suffer to injuries. Do not feed wild animals as they will get a habbit of it and when someone doesn't give them food they will hurt the person

what's wrong about this is that, it would die of starvation not knowing how to get it's own food. they have powerful grips but I don't think they would have enough time to do that or the person might fight back, which in results with both losing/hurting themselves. So it'll be bad for the orangutan and the person, but mostly orangutan

I think the go home lesson here is that all that has happened here is that they have conditioned/taught this beautiful orangutan mother to grab humans and expect food for it, which if continued she will pass down to her baby. This is bad. Viewing wild animals should only happen from a distance, these interaction shouldn’t be happening with tourists. It’s not an extremely bad thing for orangutans to be comfortable with humans, but they definitely shouldn’t be having this type of interaction. I don’t know what poaching is like with orangutans nowadays but even if it is low, it’s still good for them to have a healthy amount of distrust to humans. Tour guides need to make money as I’m sure they have families to feed, but they don’t need to allow people to get this close to get people to go out into the bush with them. Fortunate orangutans are one of the lesser aggressive apes, and I’m sure they wouldn’t do this with chimps because of that reason.

This is so wrong. It should NOT be fed for doing this. I had an encounter with an adult chimp once. People would stand behind an iron fence and throw food to 2 in a cage at a zoo, 1 male 1 female. There were a lot of bananas on the ground in front of the cage. I vaulted the fence, picked up a banana and one of the chimps had it's arm through the bars with it's hand open. When I went to give it the banana, instead of taking it, he grabbed my wrist. I am 6ft. 210lbs. so I twisted my wrist and grabbed the chimp by it's wrist. It still had me but I had it too so I lunged backward and pulled the chimp with all my strength. I pulled him off the big branch he was sitting on and when he smashed into the bars, he let go. He had me in a tight grip and if I didn't twist and grab him, I doubt it would've let go. I could bench 300lbs. and curl 160lbs. that and pulling him into the bars worked. I would not want to do that again.

Haha - that sounds like quite an experience. Those claims of them being 4-7 times as strong as even an average a man, is way overdriven. But they are indeed very strong and it would be really hard get out of their grip, if you get held like in the video (they don't need to be 4 times as strong for that. Just think about a reasonably strong man holding you the same way. It's not very easy to get out of either). Without bars in between I wouldn't be that cocky - since nothing stops them from bite me. It's still an animal, that can be quite unpredictable (the line between playing and getting aggressive for real, can be quite thin).

So clearly this orangutan isn't just some random orangutan as someone else put in the comments she's become an orangutan that people treat as a tourist attraction for example the person swinging at her baby and her not attacking or protecting more fiercely is good indication she is not 100% wild but I don't care how much you think you've trained a wild animal a wild animal will always be just that a WILD ANIMAL!!! Wild animals, in my opinion from everything I've ever seen heard or learned, will never be 100% domesticated or tamed, At any given moment that animals behavior can and most likely at some point will return to its natural state they will become more unpredictable and dangerous they are not supposed to be entertainment for humans just look at the Whales ended up turning on their trainers and either killing them or coming close to killing them and SeaWorld... Rescuing a wild animal and necessary permanent captivity is one thing but they should never be turned into a tourist attraction for monetary gain and they should never stop being treated like the wild animals that they are

Bears learn to do highway robbery like that. They learn if they follow a fishermen there's a good chance the fisherman hands his stringer of fish over. Bad bad habit to let them grab people like that. I wonder if anyone's received a broken or dislocated finger

Yes this is cute but It's not natural. You can't really say these are wild orangutans if they are being fed by humans. I wish people would just leave these animals to their own devices, maintain a hugely healthy distance. Interacting with them like this is nothing more than domesticating them.

Never let them grab you if you give them something toss it. My tufted capuchin use to grab my arm when I would hand him things playing and he was small but I still felt the force , trickiness and possessive behavior.

I’ve watched 10 clips of this same tour with different ppl they are holding them hostage for food How come they never grab the brown ppl it’s almost like they kno who doesn’t belong this the first clip where a brown person came and got the man loose the other clips they just let them be hostages these tour guides are something else lol
