Helen Marten presents a series of works from nominated projects Lunar Nibs at the 56th Venice Biennale and Eucalyptus Let Us In at Greene Naftali, New York.
Using sculpture, screen printing and writing Marten produces works that are full of models and motifs taken from contemporary visual culture. Her intricate and intriguing sculptures bring together a range of handmade and found objects as varied as cotton buds to fish skins, to create poetic visual puzzles. In these new contexts, familiar objects become strange and abstract and give rise to new and unexpected stories or ideas.

The description is confusing and with the music it's just stressing me out! I appreciated the art itself when I went to the exhibition :)

What an utter and complete waste of time, how on earth dare you call this "art?" It is a disgrace that someone has the actual time to do such crap! But then again, when Tracy Emin's "unmade bed" gets into the Tait Gallery and sells for over a million quid then absolutely anything goes doesn't it! The bed and it's environs are littered with objects such as empty vodka bottles, empty lager cans, the bed sheets are stained with menstrual fluid, strewn with filthy toilet tissue and stained with other dubious liquids, again, how the fuck can you call this ART?????

Agree. This is a shafting of skill , nature and beauty. Three things that UK art schools find difficult to cope with. "Everything Gets on the Fridge door" ???

I can't help but think the Turner Prize is rigged. I just noticed that the winners if you go back for like 10 years all come from extremely good art univerisites like Central saint martins, Ruskin, goldsmiths or Glasgow uni of Art. These unis are repeated wins in the contest, out of thousands of entries to choose repeatedly from the same select few well... These are the best art unis in the world and have reputation to keep up hence the Turner Prize helps them do that. Art is objectional and anyone can win but when you see it's only from these select uni's it's clear something wrong is going on. I'd like to see a winner from Manchester uni or Leeds or Liverpool univeristy win. But they don't have a good art reputation despite there not being talent involved and it being objectional. Sorry but it's clearly rigged like Fifa and the Olympics. Corruption in the art world too, sad really.

one things for sure , if this is the best of the elite , the art institutions responsible for producing these inadaquates are no more than kindergarden

Peter Jones They will always respond by saying art is objectional, most of the time I like contempory art. However I found this years nominees very underwhelming. It's clear they just hand the rewards to those who went to the top art universities, simple as.

Spot on Riccy, like most everything else in this country, all the top positions / posts etc are rigged in favor of and by the monied elites based either on the old school tie network or else a fascist type of Middle Eastern race-based cronyism we're not even allowed to bring up. Choosing from this small pool of "creatives" will obviously result in a lowering of standards and this is also one reason why there are precious few decent programmes being made on TV these days - free range talent is being blocked or drowned out by these stuffed shirts being given opportunities they don't deserve,

"No poliicing of fantasy" is indeed a great thing .. but there def' would be a policing ( gallery exhibitions / MSM coverage- reluctance ) to her making an artistic statement that engages with hard street level day-to-day life as many people have to endure in this country today. Remote, cerebral, out-out-touch polished vanilla art wins through again. And the more establishment Marten becomes the less likely she is to go on to comment critically on the times we live in. Understandable and financially lucrative but ultimately rather a sad creative but morally vacuous prison in which to have to languish for the rest of her career.

I’m an artist and the thing I hate is the complete bullshit some artists say, they say some art piece they’ve made has a certain mood, representation or symbolism in it. But it doesn’t, people say they can see it but no it’s just art don’t have to think too much about it
