Hahaha… “art emergency”… can’t think of a better reason for keeping a spare sketchbook in a car 😂! I agree with your assessment of Schmincke lids; I try to keep my tubes cleaned off before closing, but those Schmincke lids still get stuck and hurt your fingers when twisting off. I did purchase one of those Golden plastic tube opener things for stubborn paint tubes, but haven’t tried it yet on a Schmincke tube.

I use the E-Z brand (or any brand will do) non- slip round gripper pads. I got those at my local grocery store but I have seen them at the dollar stores as well. Comes 3 in a pack. I use one for art and two for stubborn jar lids. 😀

These are some of my favorite videos to watch - I wish more artists would do followup art haul videos. I have a couple of the books shown, Trees and Landscapes of Britain, because of the original video and i have enjoyed them very much.

I would love to see you do more oil pastel and gelato artwork. The pieces you showed are absolutely gorgeous. Also, the Sizzix crockery cut outs, I'd love to see you intigrate those into your cards that you sell at the craft market (especiall your abstract artwork pieces). Really nice video, keep up the great work!!

Thank you! I'll circle back to doing more oil pastels I'm sure, though I never really plan what I'm going to use - just what I feel like at any given time!

I've never gotten brave enough to use a honey-based paint. I paint in the forest areas a lot and hve been stung several times by hornets as it is. I don't want them riled up any more...they are mean this time of year. I also leave my travel kit in the car all the time so they would likely get too warm and run. It's nice to always have supplies handy!

I love my Golden Artist GRIPR paint tube opener. It was $3.70 US on Amazon. It is a "U" shaped sort of pliers with different sized notches that fit nearly all tube caps. I got it after tearing a tube when the lid was super stuck. Works like a charm. Get 2.

I second this recommendation! Love my GRIPR tool! Helps even stuck caps come off without damaging the tube! And makes it easy to open tubes without hand pain.

16:58 Put the tube upside down in a tiny cup of hot water. I just did that a few hours, surprisingly also with Schmincke’s French Ultramarine. It was the small 5 ml tube. I got the lid of a 100 ml mister bottle and filled it with boiling water then I dipped the tube upside down up to the neck. The paint loosened within seconds and I saved my tube from getting twisted. 😉

Thank you! I usually use a mini pair of pliers for the job, but couldn't reach it during the video! I will try your method though, and give it a good clean at the same time.

I love my Paul Reubens oil pastels as well. The Sennelier colours are STUNNING but some of them are sometimes too buttery for what I'm trying to achieve, whereas Paul Reubens seems to have a pretty good handle on the consistency. It doesn't help that I live in a sub-tropical part of the world of course. A new day a new parcel 😮😃👍🏻. Have just received (about half an hour ago) the tin of 60 Carbothellos. OMG, they're beautiful. Got them literally half price on Amazon so I jumped in without even thinking 🤔😆. I may be stuck in bed but wen I'm able, there's lots to play with 🤓. Thanks for another fab video.

That was an interesting mix of art supplies. The autumn green looks a bit too spring green to me compared to the greens I see around me here through the seasons. It would be a good base to work from though, with a little extra warm yellow or orange added. I have some good news, hubby got one of the many jobs he applied for and starts work on the 9th Sept so I celebrated by buying a set of 24 Inktense pencils that were on special 😂The set has most of the colors I was going to buy separately and only a couple non lightfast that I wouldn't have bought and it worked out cheaper to buy the set and a couple of loose pencils than to buy them all loose. 🤷‍♀Plus I gained my first pencil tin, that might be useful for holding something else 🤔 That's the only draw back to buying loose pencils, you never get a tin. So that's me finished with buying pencils. I have some Albrecht Durers, Derwent pastel pencils and now some Inktense ones. I also have two Holbein soft white pencils as recommended by you. I really like them for drawing over other materials. My current art wishlist has very little left on it now. I only have 3 Daniel Smith and 2 Holbein watercolors on it plus 8 Promarkers, (I picked the colors especially for urban sketching). I have maybe 6 or 7 Neocolors listed but I haven't decided to go with ones or twos or a mix to get the colors I want so numbers will probably change and that's pretty much it.

Helen, I wonder if you'd be interested in doing a couple "desert island" type videos....like if you could have only 12 books, only 12 supplies (sets count 😂), etc. maybe as a year end series and you could update annually based on things you've tried. I find I think differently about my supplies if I have to consider limitations....like one for me is when I downsize, what if I can only keep what fits into 1 or 2 storage tubs??
@helencryer

That sounds fun! I had been thinking about what my absolute core of art materials would be, so this kind of ties in. I'll probably do something along those lines soonish.

To straighten the tip of your synthetic brushes, hold them in the steam of a boiling kettle for a couple of seconds. I saw it in a livestream by the people from silver brushes and I've tried it out myself. 👍🏼

@@helencryer I tried to edit that and it didn’t post with everything. The Princeton neptunes. I love them. I really enjoyed the art work you created with these supplies. I’ll admit, seeing them and your struggles and successes and you explore the supplies are a great tonic for exploration, especially when I have that blank page problem. Anyhow. Thanks. (Oh, and after 3-years get this… they are scheduling a hip surgery and I thought of you).

Really enjoyed seeing your art haul one year on! All those books, beautiful colors and just how much of your supplies that you used. I would never remember my exact haul to refer back to without a video like you have to reference! Thanks for sharing. I love my Princeton brushes too! I really appreciated your feedback about student watercolors versus professional; I often go back and forth. I am just now starting to buy professional watercolors, and I am looking forward to seeing the difference. I have only used the MeiLiang set at this point to practice, but I am just a hobbyist. I am trying a few Sennelier next along with some Daniel Smith. Yay!
@helencryer

Thank you! No - I don't remember without looking at my past videos! The Meiliang are really good paints, but depending on which professional paints you buy, I hope you will enjoy the smooth transparency of the Senneliers and the wonderful characteristics of the various Daniel Smiths. Plus you'll have more reliable Lightfast ratings.

Great recap….i was very reassured to see your Princeton round 8 has a little bit of a wonky tip,I treated myself to the set you mentioned and was worried mine was a little damaged,but turns out it’s not 😅. I would love to try the gelatos but way too expensive for me,they seem such a popular medium i wonder why they’ve stopped making them? 🤔 Thanks again for the great recap 🙏
@helencryer
@helencryer 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! The tip on my brush doesn't seem to affect anything, so I'm not really fussed about it! The Gelatos are definitely fun, but just the equivalent of a kids' product, so it's worth exploring other cheaper paint sticks options.

Fun video! Enjoyed seeing how you used the gelatos; the Translucent set is my favorite, as well. I got the Caran D'ache oil pastels but haven't used yet. I'd be interested to see how Hendershot achieved those fine details of window frames, twigs, or twine (with a smaller brush and patience or with a pen or pencil?) Loved the Landscapes of Britain book overview. I have to get that one! I like the Inktense pencils, but you confirmed I don't need their watercolors. In terms of Lapis Lazuli, have you ever tried the Della Magna lapis lazuli or fra angelico (stunning)? I feel your pain about the Schmincke lids getting stuck.

I went back and looked in the book - some of the windows he masks out with masking fluid first, but the details are all painted in. I hadn't heard of the other Lapis Lazulis, no - thanks!
