What a wonderful, beautiful collection you have! When you are young, you have 50 years ahead to enjoy them again. Most of my books come from charity shops and I return them at once, except for the "keepers", which I'd like to read again one day. I've found many bargains; Collections of Lawrence, Greene, Orwell for £1 or less. Some books are brand new or unread. BTW I am guessing that English is not your native language? Anyway, reading in a second language is a great way to improve, as I find with French.

Sons and Lovers is probably one of the greatest novels of the Twentieth century. Although Lawrence's reputation has largely been related with the controversial Lady Chatterley's Lover, Lawrence was in his creative best in Sons and Lovers. The tale of an English family from the mining community, the story is chiefly about Paul, who is an autobiographical representation of Lawrence himself. The Freudian aspects of the novel took it beyond any other novel of the author's time. I admire that you have it in your collection. Apart from that, who can negate the brilliance of Stoker's gothic masterpiece Dracula? And finally the best of them all, Wuthering Heights - the only novel of Emily Bronte - probably the greatest English novel of the Victorian era. The passionate Heathcliff, who was one of the most passionate lovers of all times along with his satanic qualities. Thank You madam for sharing this fantastic collection of yours with the world.

OMG! You make me want to go to a cabin by myself for 6 months and read nothing but classics. :) You have the most beautiful books. I think Wuthering Heights is my favourite cover in that series although you're right Les Mis is pretty fab too! I actually don't keep that many classics on my bookshelves because I know I can easily get copies if I want so I'd rather keep harder-to-find titles on my shelves. Great video!

Nice collection. Have you ever seen the Borders Classics editions from 2006? I love those and still collect them off ebay/amazon. I always loved the cover art and the text/pages they used were always easy on the eyes. Google 'borders classics 2006' to see what I'm talking about

As usual, a great video. I collect Persephone classics myself and am reading one a month (am now on No. 27). The bookmarks are only available if you buy from the Persephone shop in London (I think) and also the Persephone editions with illustrated covers, do not have coloured endpapers. Please carry on with the videos. I am in awe of your fluency and wide reading.

Great video 😊 I'm sorry that your clothbound editions are so fragile. I have Jane Eyre and Pride and Predjudice in Barnes and Nobles flexi bound edition and although they're beautiful, I'm afraid they are a bit on the fragile side. I was wondering: is War and Peace good? I saw it at my library but am a bit intimidated by its size lol!

I’ve heard from many people that the Penguin clothbound books are bad quality and fall apart or get worn out really easily, it’s like they’re only made to collect and not at all to read and that sucks :/ beautiful but I won’t be buying any. Love the Penguin English Library edition though!

Hey Helene, thank you for the video! I was thinking about reading some classics, but I'm not sure what collection should I get. I'm aware the Penguin Clothbounds are pretty fragile, at least on the designs, but are Penguin English Library well made? Do you think they will last? At the end of the day they are paperbacks, unlike the clothbounds, I would prefer getting something to be read over the years, so I'm not sure about which collection should I chose. Hope you can help

hi! I have two Penguin English Library books and they’re pretty fragile imo. the pages are very thin and the covers kinda fade and bend very easily. my copy of wuthering heights is not in the best state anymore, but I do have to say I don’t really mind because I like books with a kind of worn look, like you can see that they’ve been read a lot. Then I also own Jane Eyre which is in a much better state but that’s solely because I haven’t gotten to it yet. So anyway if you want a book that stays good as new for a long time I wouldn’t recommend these editions but they’re very pretty nonetheless.

Does a “classic”by definition have to be written by a white European or North American writer?
@johnbartholf777
@johnbartholf777 3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Classics are books that have stood the test of time and "Classics" of literature are a more recent phenomenon outside the West. And N. America has hardly any Classics at all. There are many Classics that don't fit this definition though: Sun Tzu "The Art of War," "100 Years of Solitude," "The Bhagavad Gita," "The Epic of Gilgamesh" I suppose could qualify, and others. Do you have any favorites?
