Your way of making dresses has really been inspiring. I am in the process of starting to learn how to sew and make my own clothes. Thank you for giving such a great new way (for me) to look at sewing xx

Hi Helen, let me say firstly you are a very talented designer. This dress is exactly what I want for my second wedding to my girlfriend of 11 years, here in Australia. Wish you lived here the postage for a heavy wedding dress would be a killer and very hard to do a fitting when I live on the other side of the globe....never mind I will continue to enjoy watching your creations. Thank you so much for sharing this video loved it. Hugs X Princess Fi (That's what my friends call me, if only I had a Princess dress)
@HelenHobden7 жыл бұрын
Hi Princess Fi, Thank you for the lovely compliment. :) Yes I agree, it's really annoying how much overseas postage costs. However, if you are interested in me making a dress for you, I can make it to your measurements and if it needs tweaking, perhaps a local dressmaker could help? Anyway, congratulations to you both on your up-coming wedding, and have fun planning!!

Oh my goodness, Helen! The zipper - brilliant! Thank you for this. Do you think about bias or grain when you're cutting - or does it just not matter? You are like a miracle-worker - there are no rules and the results are amazing.
@HelenHobden5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Barbara, that's really kind of you to say so. :) I'll be honest, I don't usually think about that before cutting; unless I know it will be a long edge - then I'll try to cut it the way it will fray less. If I hold a piece up and it just doesn't flow or hang quite right, then I'll turn it round! Thanks again!

@@HelenHobden Helen, my Mom was an extraordinary seamstress - she took classes and learned tailoring - made all her own clothes and sometimes special things for others as well. She was creative, but she was a perfectionist and did things "the right way." When I sew, I always hear my Mother's voice and I err on the side of "right" instead of my creativity. I'm glad I am familiar with my Mom's way, but I'm hoping to find MY OWN WAY, and your free-flowing style has been immensely helpful in learning to listen to myself and letting go of the "shoulds." Thanks again, Helen.

So basically I can do what ever I feel looks cool and also comfy? I think I need a dress form. Can this be done without one? New subscriber, love your work. Thanks for sharing 💛
@HelenHobden3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! I personally wouldn't tackle a big project like this one without a dress form; but it could potentially be done without one with a full length mirror and possibly some help for the back, but it would be difficult. Thank you. :)

I loved watching this ! I just can't sew chiffon, silk, satins, etc., they just slip and slide all over the place, they gather, snag and get stuck under the feed dog plate ! how on earth do you make it look so easy ? I'd love to be able to sew with those luxury fabrics, but have given up now.
@HelenHobden6 жыл бұрын
Oh no; I'm sorry! I suppose my tips would be to make sure you have a new fine needle and gently pull the fabric taught as you sew.

Loved the video. Where do you get your vintage clothes?
@HelenHobden5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I gather them whenever I see them! I keep a look out on ebay, vintage fairs, boot sales, jumble sales, charity shops etc - I'm always ready to spy some nice vintage bits and pieces!

Where did you get the nightgown ?
@HelenHobden4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I can't remember now. It might have been the vintage fair in Frome, Somerset, or it might have been ebay - I collect things when I spot them!

Sorry about that. It's meant to be more an inspirational guide than detailed instructions really. Every dress would turn out differently.
