Yes, I once bought some quarter-sized gold leaf squares and used them in the background of an angel mosaic. I was aghast at how it looked-like right out of the factory. Never again. “Perfection is imperfection. Imperfection is perfection.”

Would the principles you discussed be any different when cutting marble? What are the pros and cons of these porcelain tiles vs marble?

Marble is a porous material and of course comes in lots of different thicknesses. There is no particular advantage of marble - it's mostly an aesthetic choice and also it depends where the mosaic will go and what it will be used for. Ceramic is non porous and frost proof and also, being factory made, is uniformly flat. Essentially the same principles apply for both materials.

That's so nice to hear! Yes, absolutely, you don't need to grout if you don't want to. Obviously, you can't put it outside if it's not grouted, but other than that it will be fine.
