Another great video! I just spoke with Pennsylvania State Police this week and they require you to be a trooper for a couple years before being consider. I’ve also talked to the Maryland State Police and they hire civilian pilots so it truly does depend on the agency.

The best advice I can give when talking with people who are considering rotor or fixed wing is what do you prioritize? Do you prioritize money, travel, time off, family, etc.? These are all great things to consider and based on those priorities, it’ll give you a better idea if your career goals are achievable through a rotor or fixed wing career.

Thoughts: 26 year LEO Pilot and 11 year EMS Pilot here....1. If financially unable, explore your Military options. 2. LEO Aviation Units will likely be with the larger agencies which most likely will require college from 45-60 hours to a degree possibly. My former Agency requires a private Helicopter license but minimum 7 years in patrol/traffic to even apply for an opening. Don't give up on your dreams. It can happen. It did for me. Tip: ALWAYS fly and act professional as well as be dependable. Show up on time. Understand that present sacrifices can pay future rewards!

Kansas City Mo PD requires 36 months in the field before you can transfer to a specialized unit but our unit will take someone with no flying experience. We teach in house up to IFR rating.

Philip is 57 I think it is to late to join the police force now. I should of done this thirty years ago with the helicopters and planes. I think now I would do it as a hobby and if I got offered a job I might consider the vacancy. Take care lads and happy flying philip.

Most police departments have to train you to be a pilot if you are in their police department and apply for the opening. So if you want to be a police officer Pilot start working as a cop on the street when open comes up they have to train you . So save your money Get a job working for a police department that has frequent openings. Please departments have been taken to court and found out that they have to train you for a pilot job if you are already employed

Almost every Law aviation unit, need to be a cop, at least 5 years, no problems, good sick record ,arrest ,etc. Plus minimum private but most want u to have commercial, preferred helo but some will take fixed. Best bet , save money start taking lessons, get hired somewhere as a cop. Or become a cop and know someone as well. Dont know if hes asking will they pay for him to learn , in 99% of depts NO unless u know someone with pull.

Kenny, flew EMS for 5 years. Why did you depart from flying commercially in favor of training instead e.g. pay wasn't enough, lifestyle wasn't favorable...? Context: 33 year old with a degree and 11 years working in fast tech. 3 young kids and a wife. Burned out in tech. Starting my PPL to see if I can make a career transition happen now that I can self-fund my schooling. Planned on starting when I was 20 but $100k in training debt sounded like a bad idea and I didn't want to sign away to the military so I opted for a career in Tech with the goal of being able to self-fund. 13-years later, the window is open. I do wonder why there seems to be a theme of many leaving the Rotary industry to pursue a living in some other form. I know the hours requirements and inability to make a living while building hours seems to be a common theme. I would love to hear your experience.

Great question Rocky! I will do an episode soon on this topic. Short version, I absolutely love what I do now. Self Employed. I still fly and teach, because I want to, not because I have to. I love the creation process. I have turned into a camera and gear junkie. I enjoy making videos. I have a passion for teaching. No boss, no top heavy company making decisions about how I should fly. No questioning my decisions. To top it off, I am make a much better living doing what I do right now, over and above every other profession or business I have had in the past! Ultimately I am still making my living as a pilot! On my terms!

@@HelicopterGround makes total sense. How long ago did you make that transition i.e. from having a boss working in a commercial operation to self-employed with a flight school? I make a good living now and have a lot of autonomy but I don't love the process of what I do. I'm ready to get back to where I started but with a lot more responsibility. The only career/life advice I want to impart to my kids is...find a way to be of service doing things that give you more energy than they take away. They do what you do, not what you say so I have to start living it. Step 1 is HOGS Ground School.
